@gomdorri: I replied to your PM about the books :P

But yeah, note-taking depends on your personality. Some people are better at studying when note-taking (NSQ, others) and others are better at just reading (NSQ,Mansu, gomdorri, (according to posts)). Some are really good at both (NSQ, others).

Sooooo. Everybody. How is your studying progress going? Iām getting EXTREMELY lazy (only able to read 1 chapter a day without yelling at inanimate objects) but nevertheless, I will work harder -____- Thereās so much summer assignments in the way for studying, but I guess this is better than school time lol.

@MathGuy777 Quick question: Is taking AP Bio as a freshman normal at your school, or are you the first person to do it?

@starchow: long answer: itās not really ānormalā at my school, because two years ago, 8th grade students could not take Bio Honors, but last year (2011-2012), 8th grade students could take it. Only a few 9th graders are taking AP Bio this year (~5 freshmen)
So technically, in my grade, I am one of the first to do it.

Oonnnneee last question:
Whatās the difference between Biology 8e and Biology 8e w/ mastering biology?

MasteringBiology is the online edition of the textbook. It comes with some extra stuff too, not really necessary, but can be useful.

On average, how long does it take for you all to read one page in Campbellās on the 1st read? It takes me around 3 to 4 minutes. I think Iām going too slow.

@bereniceabbott It depends, on the full text pages it takes me around 3-4 minutes if it is a new concept, challenging concept, something that seems important, etc. On the diagram pages, I can spend 20 minutes or more(Krebs cycle was a nightmare!). In general, I usually lightly read through the filler parts of the textbook in 2-3 min., depending on the subject matter. Just my 2 cents :)

Just going to repeat my question to NSQ so it doesnāt get lost in the thread:

@NSQ just out of curiosity what is the full name of the A&P textbook?
Also, I have: Life, the Science of Biology 7th edition by William K. Purves, David Sadava, et al. do you think that this book is good/bad/better than Campbell for USABO studying?

In non USABO news Cross Country started and my muscles hurt so bad (lactic acid build up?) and I am cramming summer assignments. :)

Are any of you guys studying for other Olympiads? I am feeling like I should just go hard core bio because of all the creepy Mathcounts kids at my school, no offense though (I was once one too). And are you guys watching the London Olympics, so far China is dominating :(

I might study for the chemistry one next year. I donāt like chemistry, but my dadās a chemistry professor so I have easy access to chemistry books.

I guess China deserves it, because all their life, theyāve only trained for the Olympics, and this is finally their time to shine. Theyāve left their homes to train and theyāve probably lost their childhood.

Hello my bio buddies :)

Iām on the Cellular Respiration chapter right now, and it goes into a lot of detail (with all the chemicals drawn out and everything). Do I have to memorize it all? Iām specifically looking at pages 168-169 and other diagrams like itā¦

Happy studying!

Hey guys sorry for not posting on here for a long time I have been studying/traveling! And I know my legs are quite sore since CC season has started. @starchow Actually recent research has shown that potassium ion(K+) build up during strenuous exercise causes muscle fatigue and pain rather than lactic acid build up(lactate). Found this in the 8th edition of CR during my reading in chapter nine pg. 178. Favorite chapters so far in any ones reading? Mine personally has been Chapter 18, I find gene regulation to be immensely fascinating I am only on chapter 26 right now but I was on vacation so now I will be able to read a lot more!

I bought my book 3 days ago so Iām waiting for my book to come in the mail. :3

Afterwards Iāll be able to start studying heehee. SO EXCITED~ x) I love bio.

Hi!

Summer vacation is now close to its endingā¦how do you guys plan to study Bio Olympiad after vacation is ended? Do you study at dawn or late night or etc?

@bereniceabbott: I generally read at that rate, also! But lately, Iāve been learning to speed read so that I can read 6x faster, while still gaining a decent amount of comprehension. After speed reading through the chapter 3x, I saved half my time reading, and gained the same amount of comprehension!

@PolishMusician: I have the 9th edition, but my favorite chapter was chapter 20, Biotechnology! Something about the term ānorthern blottingā excites me XD
Ch.9 page 178 in 9th edition also mentions the same information about fatigue and pain. You are a very good reader! I skip over certain sentences and try to grasp the main idea (which turned out horribly). Iām on chapter 29,which is like plants diversity I or something, I think Iām going to cram in the 800+ pages of Ravenās biology of plants in one day (tomorrow) because itās a library book and itās due on Friday haha.

@gomdorri: Congratulations! You have officially become a member of the Campbell Biology book club! Hahahaā¦ I think youāll enjoy it. At times, Campbell brought me stress, and other times, I felt happy when I understood some of the material. Okay, I think Iām getting too emotionally attached to a book. Oh, and I love bio too!

@Mansu: My summer hasnāt ended, but Iām probably going to study at night. What about you? I feel like it depends on you; if you study better on mornings, then you should study Campbell in the mornings.

@bluefintuna: Most diagrams in Campbell are worth memorizing (lol, thatās why they put in the textbook, I guess!) But I think you should try to understand the process and significance of chemicals before you try to memorize the names. Thatās what Iāve been doing, and it helped me out a lot! Unfortunately, certain topics in biology contain so much facts that you need to memorize in order to appreciate, but in the end, itās worth it! I always found information about genes filled with facts.

Lol, I donāt even remember what gene expression or allosteric gene regulation is, but I keep on thinking of those words for some reasonā¦

@Mansu: um honestly I have NO idea. I wonāt get my book until after school starts sooā¦ Due to schedule incompatibilities I donāt take Ap Calc (apparently get time consuming) and I have a free period throughout the school year so Iāll probably use that time and a couple hours every night since Iām starting to study later than everyone elseā¦

Can someone tell me how to actually get started? I know this is a Biology Olympiad but how does it work, when is it, and what do you study?

wow - this thread is already in full swing :)

the biggest probem with me is i start reading campbells and then i start skimming and nodding off until the point where i have re read the same sentence a couple of times to even register it. and by that point, iām hungry .___."

itās a vicious cycle.

but i canāt wait for the 2013 opens!

does anyone know where the IBO is being held next year?
