@PassionForUMiami What do you mean “not humans looking at the applications”?. The application was read by machine?

@ivyhopes12 Sorry to hear that. You seem to have excellent scores and a lot of volunteer hours. I wish you the best of luck in your scholarship search. Same to you @PassionForUMiami.

Hi,
I’m wondering if I should be updating my EA colleges about this semifinalist status? I know it’s <2% selection for semifinalists, but I’m still scared that it’ll dilute the rest of my app. Along with it, I plan to update the colleges about a competition I just placed nationally along with a couple of state awards that I won throughout the span of the past 2 weeks.
On my app, NHS, National Commended, AP Distinction, etc. awards are comparatively weak & didn’t worth a mention, so I’m wondering if the semifinalist status is at the same caliber as the aforementioned awards or if it can really serve to enhance my app. Thanks.

^^I would like to know the same. @artgirl0000 Apparently the coca cola semifinalist are all chosen by a computer that has a set algorithm. If you meet the qualifications, you are chosen. You can think of it as a point system. It takes the amount of community services hours you have, how many activities you participate in, how long you have participate in those activites, etc. and picks the highest. However, I’m sure other things are factored in such as the area you live in and how many people from that area apply. I should say, though, that all the information I have stated is from previous Coca cola scholarship threads, so I do not know how much of this is creditable, but judging from how many people apply (over 103,000 this year), this seems to hold up.

I was wondering if that would help to supplement my app because the only thing I have mentioned for the work I did for my community on my CommonApp was my role as a ASB President, (the only thing that made it into my top-10 EC on my CA as a community service thing) but that might not even count as ‘community service hours’ since I did that for ‘a club’. However, I do volunteer via miscellaneous channels (UNICEF, Red Cross, WeSSO, etc.) on a fairly regular basis that I did mentione on my Coca-cola scholarship, so I don’t know if updating colleges of my semi-finalist status would be a nod to the work I did in my community that I have neglected to mention.
Hmmmm. Choices.

notifying your EA or ED colleges of your semifinalist status can’t hurt; that’s what I did last year. I just forwarded the semifinalist email to my ED school’s admissions office. It can’t hurt in most cases, schools appreciate that you keep in touch with them after you submit your application.

I heard it was like <2% or so of the applicants were chosen for semifinalist. I didn’t apply but many of my friends did. As some people have mentioned here that test scores doesn’t really matter, they’re probably right. One of my friends has a 36 on the ACT, takes ~20 APs in total, and has a stellar GPA. He did a bunch of volunteering work and those things, but is involved in very little extracurricular activities. Also he’s is an URM so I don’t really think that affects anything either.

Well, congrats to those who made it in!!

I’m a Semi-Finalist for NC!

Semi-finalist from Detroit, MI.

WOW! good thing I checked my spam folder!!! My son is a semi-finalist! Thanks for the info. Georgia!

@ZBD5421 No problem.

My son just asked how many get picked for Semi-finals. Anyone??

Hey guys, the recommendation letter for the Coca-Cola Semifinalists application seems pretty specific. I’ve already asked some of my teachers to write letters of recommendation for my college applications and they have finished with that. Would it be rude/an inconvenience to a teacher if I asked them to adjust the first letter they wrote so it fit more along the lines of what this scholarship application is looking for?

@ZBD5421 I’m pretty sure about 2,000 total Semi-Finalists get picked for this scholarship, and the number of Semi-Finalists per state varies from around 5 to 100+.

Thanks!

Semi-finalist from Texas!

Semi-finalist Virginia!

Will we receive an email stating that we did not advance to the next round, or no? Only if we were chosen as a semifinalist?

@danman1022, I believe they send out an email to all semifinalists regarding their status in the scholarship program

It was in spam, of course! I made semifinalist Thanks for your help!
