Hi guys,

I'm going to take this class next year and I want to get a head start on it this summer so I'm making this thread.

So, first question:
Does anybody have any pdfs of useful textbooks/review books?

Hi guys,

I'm going to take this class next year and I want to get a head start on it this summer so I'm making this thread.

So, first question:
Does anybody have any pdfs of useful textbooks/review books?

My class used Blue Pelican

eBoard.com;

Our school uses BlueJ

If you’re just beginning with Java, here’s a starting point: [Beginning Java](Beginning Java)

If you’re a little more advanced try here: [Introduction to Computer Science using Java](Introduction to Computer Science using Java) as well

You might want to take a look at the Grid World case study ( [AP Central - GridWorld Case Study](<a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>AP Computer Science A Classroom Resources – AP Central | College Board) )

Good luck!

Thanks for these!

My advice for you guys is to get Barrons. That is all…

^OK, I’ll buy it in a bit.

I have the 4th edition of Barrons pdf if anybody wants it.

I’m kinda scared to take this class. I’m going to take it online next year.

Can anyone recommend an online company that teaches AP computer science. My daughter needs to pass the AP computer science test in May 2014 but her high school does not offer AP computer science, so she needs to self study and maybe get an online course to help. Any suggestions? How about study books, is Barrons the best?

EPGY is pretty good. I’ve had several friends who have had seucess with the EPGY program in the past.
[Stanford University Online High School](http://epgy.stanford.edu/ohs/divisions/comp_sci.html)

The class would be OCS01.

I’ve also heard that Barrons is the best.

@MutaRiSC Thanks!!

is it possible to self study with barrons and nothingg else?

It seems that we get little to none instruction in school for APCS and expected to learn everything on our own. What about you?

Could you send me the pdf of barrons?
thanks!

Will Barron’s AP Computer Science A be good for preparation?

If you have background in programming already, Barron’s would definitely be sufficient. It worked for me perfectly. (I’m not sure how it works for folks new to programming, though.)

We’re using BlueJ on our macs, and the book Java Methods by Maria Litvin, made specifically for AP. That, coupled with Litvin’s own review book should certainly be enough for a 5. They go together perfectly and have 5 practice tests. Check em out

How do you think I should prepare for a self-study with very little programming background (some LaTeX, codeacademy, but nothing heavyweight)? And I guess a more important question is this: how should I introduce myself to coding in a way that’s fun and substantial but isn’t necessarily gonna get me credit?

@MutaRiSC
Could you send me the Barron’s pdf?

Also, I know PHP and C++ very well, but I don’t know Java. I will probably take Java in the spring, but could I work on self-teaching myself until then?
Do you guys know how hard the AP Comp Sci test is? I’d like to make a 5, because the universities I am looking at only accept 5’s.

My class is teaching me nothing and last year basically everyone failed the exam. I have no faith, lol. Time to start self-studying.

I started the class as soon as school ended through Florida Virtual School and I’m 15% done with the class.
Here is a really useful site that I use whenever I have doubts or curiosities. It is very similar to the APCS class structure:
