[]Awards: school awards, AMC regional award, some regional math awards
[]Why you think you were rejected: applied for financial aid, many applicants just like me, not a US citizen, &c &c
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] Hm, I had thought I had put how much I (genuinely) loved MIT in my application, and how much I would fit at MIT (based on the guidelines specified on the site). I guess it wasn’t enough, it didn’t go through, or something was wrong. Now I’m recovering from the shock of the rejection from my absolute top choice–and life moves on. I haven’t been accepted at any of my 14 colleges yet except for one (a backup) that I can’t see myself going to. We’ll see what fortunes the end of March brings.

Stats:[ul]
[]SAT: 800 CR, 800 M, 740 W, 9 essay (2340 total)
[]SAT II: 800 Math 2, 790 Chem, 790 Bio
[]ACT: 35 cumulative, 8 essay, all the section scores were around 35, best was 36 science
[]GPA: 4.0 unweighted (not anymore hahaaa), 4.8 weighted
[]Rank: 16/450ish? (I think the rank on the midyear report was a little higher)
[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): AP’s, Chemistry (5) Calc BC (5) Latin Lit (4). I only took three, but this is somewhat normal at my school, and I’m taking 5 this year.
[/ul]Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: I’m not sure… I’m not usually the best essay writer (as you can tell from my test scores haha), but I liked these. I was worried that I might’ve sounded too nerdy on my essays (Caltech was the only school where I was honest about my geekiness ahaha), since I though maybe Caltech didn’t want any more nerds, but I guess it all turned out alright.
[]Recs: Didn’t see them, I’m guessing they were good but nothing special.
Counselor Rec: Same; good but nothing special. My counselor really liked me, she just didn’t know me very well.
[]Supplementary Material: one recommendation letter from a summer research mentor. I think it should’ve been pretty good. At least proof that I’m adequate in a lab.
[]Summer Activities: Organized a casserole bake-off for Meals on Wheels, organized a series of food sales for the victims of the Sichuan Earthquake, NSLC (residential leadership conference), genetics research on polyploidy in angiosperms using Mimulus as a model, volunteer camp counselor at NC Botanical Garden, volunteer with the radiation oncology department at Duke

[]Gender: Female
[/ul]Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: Debate (class captain), Science Club all the science competitions the school participates in, grouped in one club, Science Olympiad (varsity captain), Science Days service club (founder+president), SkillsUSA (vice president), Octagon service club (President, Vice for the past 2 years), National Honor Society, Peer Tutoring. 250+ service hours, if that counts for anything… it actually is probably a whole lot been more than that; I stopped filing the service learning forms after a while.
[]Awards: Uhm, a fair number, for science competitions, debate, Latin. Nothing too prestigious though, they were on the state/regional level, with the exception of a few national circuit debate awards.
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Yuck. I really wanted MIT over Caltech, but I’m not too crushed b/c the Caltech buzz hasn’t worn off yet hahaaa. And I wasn’t really expecting to get in anyway. Plus it seems that I am in good company as a reject. Those of you who got in, Y’ALL BETTER BE FREAKING AMAZING. Just kidding; congrats! :)[/ul]

[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: not enough academic awards
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] All I can say is that in Canada the only criteria for university admission is your top six grade twelve marks, so I was never focused on doing the other things that kids in America do to get into universities. I did what I enjoyed, and now I am excelling in academics more then ever. My best advice for my fellow rejectees is to use this as motivation; I am going to make sure MIT is sorry they rejected me. I am going to print off that rejection letter and pin it over my desk right now.

[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Firstly, I’m a junior so it was harder on me I think. Also, I’m Asian; and I did a lot of math stuff that wasn’t too outstanding. Additionally, my recommendations from my teachers weren’t superb. I didn’t have many APs though I’m taking 5 this year. I had two B’s last semester when I turned in my midyear report (the only two I’ve gotten in high school) so that might have scared them off…
[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul]
[/li]

Overall, this is a huge disappointment. I thought my application this year was strong. I thought I could get in with the courses I took at the local university (mainly math: Analytic functions, coding theory, discrete math, biostatistics, and special topics in statistic. Also, macroeconomics and university physics) and my awards (mainly being on team Florida since I’m only the second sophomore to make it onto the 6 person team in over 20-something years of its existence). But, I guess… I dunno… I’m just not good enough. Even though I despise my school to no end, I can always apply next year. I regret not applying early action and not applying to more colleges (namely Yale and Princeton).

Right now, I need a tub of ice cream. Congrats to all who got accepted!
