Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[]SAT I (breakdown): Took twice, virtually the same, so see below.
[]SAT I superscore (breakdown): CR:700 - M:770 - W:770
[]ACT (breakdown): not applicable
[]ACT superscore (breakdown): equally not applicable
[]SAT II: Bio E: 640 - Math II - 780
[]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
when they saw it, that is. haha
[]Weighted GPA: 4.56 ish, took school’s only 2 AP classes, PreAp were weighted too.
[]Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/90
[]AP (place score in parentheses): WHist Soph (5) English Lit Junior (5) Bio [self taught] Junior (5)
[]IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
[]Senior Year Course Load: Dual Enrolled: Anatomy and Physiology, Calc Physics, General Chem 1, Linear Algebra, MV Calc, Literature 1. Then some required high school classes… as far as math and sciences, top at my school, but relative to other MIT apps, not too spectacular.
[]Number of other EA applicants in your school: 0 (1 RD I think)
[li]Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] ina-NADA-da-vida, lolz.
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Newspaper (Editor) 4 years, founded subsidiary of paper— NHS (president) 2 years— An environmental group, goes to a national conference to present our research so i guess it might be significant (Treasurer)
[]Job/Work Experience: Freelance Electronics Repairman. 4 years, pretty serious, not sure if that was evident though from the 40 or whatever words we got.
[li]Volunteer/Community service:[/ul] Volunteered at a Dog Shelter; it was one of my favorite activities in high school, but I’ve only been doing it for a year.
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[]Essays (Include Subjects):[list] Uhh not gunna list topics, that’s way too personal, and kinda goes beyond the already ambiguous significance of these. Don’t want people trying to gauge what type of essays will get them in.
[]What You Do For Pleasure: 7
[]Department at MIT: 6 (so short and straightforward, how do you really make this “good”?)
[]What You Do That’s Creative?: Lol guys please fix this, I just read 5 pages of people asking what the was doing here. The 1st 200 word essay is supposed to be a personal quality that you value. For me, I’d say 6
[]World You Come From: 7
[]Significant Challenge: 8
[]Teacher Recommendation #1: Supah dupah. Homeroom teacher who I had for AP lit, and volunteered with her over the summer. I’m one of her favorite students, and the rec was extremely long and well thought out.
[]Teacher Recommendation #2: Well, the teacher is a former Val/NMS/overachiever, she taught at Rice and does research there over the summer sometimes. I’m not super close to her but I know her well, and I know she would do her best to get me into MIT.
[]Counselor Rec: Again, super. Similar to the 1st Teacher Rec. Known me long, I’m one of her favorite students, former newspaper instructor who got me into writing, ultimately the reason I’ve been in Newspaper for 4 years and became editor.
[]Interview: Eeeexcellent. She told me at the end that she hadn’t interviewed anyone like me in a long time, and she really hoped I get in. Played pingpong after the interview… lol.
[li]Art Supplement:[/ul] Pfft, who needs creativity, that’s fuh L00zers. haha, I wish :
[/li]

Other[ul]
[]Date Submitted App: 11/1/10. Man get this off of here, lol. Has Chris not thoroughly dispelled the rumor that date of sending the app matters? A couple people up there ^ were accepted sending it on 11/1 anyway, hahaha.
[]State (if domestic applicant): Tejas
[]Country (if international applicant): US
[]School Type: Small Public/Charter
[]Ethnicity: sour cream with a little pepper sprinkled on it.
[]Gender: XY
[]Income Bracket: Either 0 or 50,000. Dad laid off, can’t remember whether I put the info for last year or not.
[]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] I can juggle
electrons

Reflection[ul]
[]Strengths: I’m pretty far along in math, and my counselor indicated that I’ve gone very above and beyond the other kids in taking advantage of the college classes available to me (we’re an early college HS, attached to a local CC). Recs really painted a positive picture of me. Doing well on a self-studied science AP probably saved me from looking like just a liberal artsy writer kid.
[]Weaknesses: Didn’t know about AMC to take advantage of that, so maybe didn’t substantiate my math skills as well as I could have. I didn’t like a couple of my essays, no major awards or science EC’s. In fact, the EC’s I listed REALLY make me look like an artsy kid, but if you asked ANYONE at my school, they’d tell you I’m a major math and science nerd, so its kind of a bummer that wasn’t conveyed.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Hmm, just not stellar. Reading some of these shows that I’m in good company, and probably narrowly avoided a worse fate. I visited MIT and never felt more at home, so I’m convinced I’m their type. Just not sure how to show it, but I’ll try to write a supplemental essay to them for RD.
[]What would you have done differently?:[/ul] On my app? Realized that I had no chance at an A in physics and just spent more time on my MIT essays. In High school? Well me and my friends tried founding science clubs, but never had enough interest, so I know improved that would have been out of the question. I wish I’d jumped ahead earlier in math, and that I’d done the AMC at least last year. Otherwise, I’m content. If they like me, then daz was up

Other Factors: MIT 4 LYFE
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Congrats guys. I saw some really good people get accepted, and not just people who were good by objective measures, which is what I really love about MIT. If I get in RD I’ll be happy as hell, but for some reason I just have this intense admiration for the place no matter what happens. If I get turned down and am lucky enough to go to BU, maybe I can make some friends across the river and chill on campus, hahaha.
