Job/Work Experience: Student Research Assistant, Louisiana State University Department of Biological Sciences (Was just a summer thing, I was volunteering and they needed me to access the cluster supercomputer, so they hired me to get me an account. Looks good on paper)
Volunteer/Community service: 200ish hours at hospitals, 100ish hours tutoring/National Honors Society service. </p>

Essays (Include Subjects):
I talked about how music reminds me of biochemistry. The essay wasn’t as “me” as I wanted, but I worked with a wonderful English teacher and am proud of the writing style.
Teacher Recommendation #1: History Teacher. Awesome dude, probably wrote a very solid but generic letter.
Teacher Recommendation #2: Chemistry Teacher. She let me read it, and it made me blush.
Counselor Rec: Good. She let me give her a resume, and she said it was the best she’d seen. Made my day. </p>

School Type: Best non-selective public school in Louisiana, but that isn’t saying much because Louisiana. Still, nice school. ~2100 people.
Ethnicity: Half Cuban, Half Bible-Belt Southern.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Hispanic helps. Also lived all over the place, I’m not sure if I included that anywhere in the application, though. Maybe hinted at it in an essay. </p>

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have solid base scores and my extracurriculars stand out.
What would you have done differently?: I don’t think I would change anything. </p>

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I also was accepted into the University Scholars Program. After being deferred at MiT, this was a welcome confidence-booster. </p>

Reflection
Strengths: Definitely a safety for me. I have a very strong strength in writing and believe my essays were the deciding factor in admissions. I was able to maintain my studies while working 22 hours a week during the school year all while balancing and leading numerous extracurricular activities. Also, being first generation probably helped.
Weaknesses: MATH SATS. 570, 640 and a 580 on Math II </p>

What would you have done differently?: Hopefully gotten a higher SAT, and i would have cared about my GPA more freshman and sophomore year, but my father passed away freshman year so it was a little tough.
