Official 2015 Penn Waitlist Discussion

As you guys know, yesterday was the last day to submit SIRs, so now the wait begins!

As people find out about their wait-list results, post here so we can get a better idea of who got in or didn't get in. Try not to overflow the thread with conversations please!

Actually, scratch that! Lets talk about where everyone is planning to go, or if they are waiting on other results. This way the thread will live!

I’m probably going to Columbia, but I’ve been wait listed here, and at Brown, Cornell and Amherst. I’m so excited to see what happens! :)

Do they ever let you know that you AREN’T going to make it off the wait list?

^ Yes. Usually by June or July at the latest, for most on the wait list.

^ Just checked a waitlist thread from last year, and most who were cut from the waitlist heard about it on June 4th. A few were allowed to remain on an “extended” waitlist, and most–if not all–of those extended waitlistees were “discontinued” from the extended waitlist by the end of June or early July:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/919923-waitlist-2014-discussion.html?highlight=waitlist

Shoot. It’s amazing how much I want to attend Penn, but the waitlist odds are dismal (unless no one from Tennessee accepted a spot :P) I just received an NROTC scholarship the other day, so maybe it will help. Had I known where I was going to be now when applying I would have gone ED in a heartbeat  I’m still waiting on vanderbilt as well and will be attending the University of Tennessee if neither go through.

as of now im going to NYU but waitlisted at Cornell, Penn, and Harvard— lets hope something good comes out of this extra wait!

Good luck on the wait, guys! Just out of curiosity, what school did you apply to? I’m just wondering if like, they waitlisted a bunch of people for CAS or SEAS or what.

I applied to Wharton!
And also out of curiosity, how many of you guys sent a letter of interest?

Good luck everyone!

I am an international student and applied as an engineering major.
(Maybe the fact that I applied FA as an international student didn’t help me with my admission haha :P)

Ive been accepted to Cornell, Berkeley, LA etc and currently will be heading to Brandeis (but I do hope that I get off the waitlist!)

Quick questions:

 1. How are the financial aid packages like when you get off the waitlist? Will it be the same as if you were admitted normally?
 2. How long do I have to decide once I get off the waitlist? Will I have time to visit?

Any comments/answers will be greatly appreciate! :)

Sent in a letter via snail mail towards the very end of April.

I applied to CAS and also got waitlisted at Harvard, Duke, and Columbia; I’m going to Berkeley unless anything changes. Fingers crossed! :(

I applied for the dual degree program in Computer Science and Cognitive Science. I’ve heard that at least 2 people from my area are rejecting Penn’s offer of admission, so I’ve got my fingers crossed!

Has anyone confirmed when we will begin to be notified?
I have gotten two different timelines: #1- Mid May to Mid June, then #2- May 9th. Lastly, is it true if you are in need of grants and other financial considerations that your changes of being called with a positive response becomes even less?

My neighbor works at Penn (not admissions, though). She said that they will try to let 60% of the people know yes or no by the second week of May. I’m not totally sure how she knows, but she seemed pretty confident when she told me.

Where/to what address do we send in our letter of intent to show them why we really want to go to Penn?

aditiji713, I think it is too late to send anything; but if you look on their undergraduate admissions site, go to “contact us” and then look for the regional admissions director that reads the applications from your region.

Then just send your letter by snail mail addressing their name, and then Penn’s admission’s office…They filter it to your admissions director there.

Going to William and Mary for the Monroe Scholars program, and I’m pretty excited about it, but still prefer Penn (entirely different schools, but both amazing in my book). I guess May 9th probably isn’t it because there hasn’t been anyone accepted yet. I’m so nervous about Penn–I would have definitely applied early decision had my financial situation been where it is now (last fall, there was some fear about my dad losing his job which then fortunately passed).

Just wondering what would be overkill as far as sending stuff in. In mid-April, I wrote the admissions officer a nice letter reiterating my interest and relating some new awards/accomplishments that I had received over the winter, and then in late April I had a teacher who is a Penn alumnus in the field I hope to major in send in an additional recommendation (probably a bad move, but he used to be an interviewer and I probably should have asked him for a letter in the first place). This weekend, I found out about a school-wide award I had received and also a state-wide recognition in the area I would like to major in. Would it be too much to send in another letter simply stating what I had received over the weekend? I sort of feel like Juliet in the Sassy Gay Friend videos–“Desperate, desperate, I am really desperate!”–but I really prefer Penn to W&M simply because it’s much closer to my home.

I don’t think sending in anything else will hurt you…
The thing with the wait list is, it really depends on who decides not to come to Penn. It doesn’t have much to do with how awesome and qualified you are, unless that awesomeness rivals someone unique who chose a different school. So if you applied showing interest in doing an econ major, there’s likely less of a chance you’ll get off the wait list.
Then again, I’ve never worked in admissions, so don’t take my words to heart.
I don’t know where you live in relation to Penn, but having lived far away from home (2-3.5 hour plane rides, depending on the location, and I guess 17 hour ones as well) for 6 years of my life thus far has been a pretty good experience. It makes going home that much more appreciated. Either way, good luck–with the wl or with William and Mary. I’ve spent lots of time in Williamsburg and it’s a great place, especially if you like history.

FYI—I just called the Admisions Office to find out if they would divulge when they will begin letting the waitlisted applicants know their status. Answer, “by the end of May”, when pressed if it could be any earlier, Answer, “Maybe”.

How many of you are holding your breath?? My D is handling this better than I am. I have no idea how many of you are out there pacing, but when you do hear, could you let us know, and to which school? Thanks and good luck to all!

Thank you for doing that for us Mcgrounded.

We need all the updates we can get! Anything is appreciated (:
