^ There’s no legal, ethical, or moral problem with withdrawing from one school when you get accepted from the waitlist at another school. It happens all the time. The worst that can happen is that you’ll lose the deposit you’ve already paid.

If, on the other hand, by “committed” to Dartmouth you mean EMOTIONALLY committed, that’s something you’ll have to decide for yourself. But keep in mind, by this fall when you get to whichever school you ultimately choose–and certainly for the four years you’re there–the emotional commitment you may have felt for a month or so in the spring really won’t matter to you anymore. In my opinion, you really should make this decision afresh, as if you had been accepted to both schools at the end of March.

My son got an email yesterday he was accepted to Penn, School of Engineering.
We are from New York. He already accepted at Wash U but will be giving up that spot.
He is also wait listed at Duke. Can you “negotiate” with these schools and tell them you got a spot at Penn, but Duke is your first choice?

Well, it sounds like yesterday was the first round of waitlist phone calls. Since our phone didn’t ring, I guess we now have to wait (May26)to see if any of the students who were called turn down the offer. I just hope it doesn’t take Penn another 3 weeks to make calls or final decisions.
Just looking for one open seat in Wharton.

SEAS waitlistee here… Anyone gotten any rejections yet? I hvent heard anything but wondering if they’ve sent any yet

^ Last year, the first round of waitlist rejections was on June 4th:

Hey congrats to both of you!

I have a quick questions though:

Did you two send in letters, called the office, etc…? If so how many times and how often. What did you say/write?

Thanks.

I sent an email mid-April. Then after I received my scholarship, I sent a second one (and then actually another when more details came in.) As stated, I just tried to remain human. Plus I had met my counselor in August at a college fair where we had a great conversation about shoes and Rocky. I think that conversation alone enabled me to be seperated from the pack. For any Juniors reading this, definitely take any time you can to meet and enjoy your admissions counselor as a person. It can go far if they have a “oh, this is that kid I met in Nashville” moment.

I know of another kid in NYC who was accepted off the wait list for the College of Arts & Sciences yesterday via email. He’ll accept. He did send a letter.

Has any international students been taken off the waitlist yet?

I was also wondering if schools usually separate the waitlist into two, one for the domestic students and another for the international students? Or are all waitlistees looked at as a whole?

Approximately, how many students were taken off the waitlist?

Just as general info, my D wrote a letter of interest, updated her file, the head of guidance at her school (an Alum) called, even stated she would switch majors, is #1/980, 5.65 weighted/4.0 unw, plus more, has not been called. While I don’t think restating your interest post May 1 hurts, in her case it has not seemed to have positive results.
So the point, I would not weigh writing a letter or expressig interest as being the major tippping of the scales for a posistive response or at least in our case.

Did they already contact everyone that has been taken off the waitlist? =/

According to the Penn portal the waitlist will continue and not close until June 30th.

mcgrounded, I tend to disagree with your ideology. While I can’t tell you what put me over the edge, just from my conversations post-decision, I believe it was the content of my letters that helped greatly. Instead of pushing as hard as possible and reiterating my stats (they already know your daughter’s, which are astounding) I talked about how my soccer team was doing and that I was enjoying the weather. It really helps the counselor get an even deeper look at who the applicant is and how they will fit on campus, when said applicant shows his or her personality in the correspondence. The worst thing to do is tell admissions things they already know. And “being willing to change majors” isn’t what they want; telling them of your new interest in ______ and how you may like to study it would go much further.

I sent a letter april 16, but I did not receive confirmation and my regional counselor is in the process of changing, so should I send in another to a different counselor or wait and assume they received it? PLEASE HELP!

@caveat-- Sure try again, call the admissions office and see if you can get the name & e-mail address to the new regional counselor. Find out when they begin working your area, because if it’s not for another few weeks or longer, you are just wasting valuable time. In which case, I would ask admisissions who you should contact for your area.

Caveat do you perhaps live in SoCal? or your admissions officer was Tiffany?
It sucked for me, because I was emailing her, and then suddenly got an “out of office” email that said she was no longer working for Penn anymore. Then I talked to her assistant, and she said I could go to her for any questions. I’m pretty sure they got it! But you should try to reach her assistant.

The assistant was super nice! She just told me that everything was in my file, and that nothing more was required of me at the time.

thanks whatisthis;I do, indeed, live in socal.

@caveat and others
Just to let you know I know of someone who got off the waitlist at UPENN in Socal. They have started to work in our area (LA and OC county). I personally think it will be too late to send another another letter and I’m sure they have received whatever you sent them. I live in California but I’m an international student. I also sent a letter of interest to my regional advisor and never received a confirmation but according to the delivery confirmation USPS provides, they have received it. Just gotta hope for the best at this point…
