Official 2015 RD results thread

Decision: Rejected

I really don’t feel like filling out this list so I’m filling in random spots, really just read the comments if you want an idea.

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
I thought all my essays were pretty good and my personality was at least reflected. I didn’t try to write anything. I’d probably rank them all in the 8-9 range, but how should I know? I liked them when I wrote it, and I proofed it as much as possible, so take it at that.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Excellent EC’s and dedication, but nothing supremely special
[] Weaknesses: testing, not being able to see well, maybe could have had more rigor (as a high school, and even senior year.)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Definitely scores….
[] What would you have done differently?: I don’t know, study more for the SAT? (Seriously, I hate that as an answer, not like I didn’t study but I focused more on EC’s and school work.)[/ul]

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Ugh, this sucks. What really sucks is that I felt like I’d fit in more than other schools and my scores are not an accurate representation, particularly since some of them were filled with major problems. I’d just like a general idea of a reason… The waiting game sucks now, especially since everyone at my school expected me to get in.

Other
State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: ~$80,000

Reflection[ul]
[] Weaknesses: Weak extracurriculars freshman/sophomore years, didn’t skip a few grades, didn’t have a hook.
[] What would you have done differently?: Joined academic team freshman year, Scio last year, self-studied APs, tested out of classes freshman/sophomore year, gotten my class rank up to #1, sent in a music portfolio, generally made my plans for application before high school rather than Junior year, built a nuclear reactor. I feel like I missed out because I didn’t realize it was remotely within my reach until Junior year.[/ul]

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Looks like University of Illinois!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 5.9 out of 6.0 - tough and extremely rare to achieve 6.0
[] Weighted GPA: 6.3/6.4

[] AP (place score in parentheses):

[] Job/Work Experience: Worked with grown people with mental illnesses + at a car dealership.
[li] Volunteer/Community service: Coach etc…[/ul]
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[] Quality most proud of: Leadership - 4
[] World You Come From: Growing up as a scientifically inclined kid among 5 otherwise inclined siblings/parents. - 9
[] Significant Challenge: Working in a group home for people with mental disabilities - 7
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Good, but not too many episodes etc.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Same.
[] Counselor Rec: Good, included a few episodes, and detailed my commitment to school work, and my academic strengths, and my involvement and participation in the school community.
[] Additional Rec: None
[] Interview: Alright - spoke over the phone - thought it went really well, actually - but tough to tell for sure.
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Late December
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): A country in Scandinavia
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: About $150 000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, I guess - except there aren’t too many applicants from Scandinavia with my kind of scores, let alone from regular public schools (i.e not IB-programs).
[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores and passion for science and learning, I guess.
[] Weaknesses: Well, I got in didn’t I? Yet, there was no nobel prize, research papers or great scientific accomplishments on my resume. I think MIT, like CalTech, know the system and level here in Norway, though. Thank you for that!
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Cuz I got my shine on.
[] What would you have done differently?: Live hard, die young.[/ul]

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Good luck to everyone else! Obviously not the be-all of life-changing decisions. I know of fantastic applicants from Norway who were asked “have you invented anything widely known?” in their interview and thought the process from then on in was silly and hopeless. Yet I never received those questions, and just applying to MIT (and other colleges in the US) has been a great honour for me. To be accepted is ineffably great - I’m looking forward to seeing y’all in Cambridge next year!

My son was not offered admission.

All I can say is: University of Maryland, here I come! And I don’t mean that in any condescending sense. Maryland is a fantastic school and is now my first choice as I believe I will get rejected from most of my other top-choice schools. Good job to all of you who got in, best of luck to you who are waitlisted, and to those of you who were rejected, you are still kickassamazingawesomeuberawesomesauce people.

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Rubik’s cube & how it impacted my personality and way I approach and solve problems; original & creative; 10[/li][] Department at MIT: Biophysics BioTrack under Course 7 (Biology major); I already know how biophysics is employed in research, so now I want to “master it” myself at MIT; 8
[] Best Attribute of Personality: Conscientious & hard-working. I don’t want to be remembered by my peers merely as “the smart kid who got everything right,” but as someone who worked hard to get where he is; 7
[] World You Come From: Bad neighborhood, close childhood friends ended up in jail, on the street, etc. Led me to have the urge to “fight for them” and succeed myself; 9
[] Significant Challenge: OCD judge at SciOly event nit-picked at my building contraption so I stood up against him and spoke out; short and to the point; 7 (?)
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: 5 pages. SHE LOVES ME. from AP Bio teacher <3. basically tells almost everything about me through my activities (likes and dislikes, sense of humor, maturity (O_O), etc.) 10+
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: 1 page. AP World teacher, like a mom to me. Rec is pretty run-of-the-mill, though. 7?
[] Counselor Rec: Saw afterwards, sort of a laundry list. 5
[] Additional Rec: Wrote it myself and got AP English teacher to sign it. Attests to outstanding writing talent and insight to reading literature (mostly true). 9
[] Interview: Had this Asian dude who lives 4 blocks from my high school. He actually graduated AND worked at said high school too before moving on to teach math somewhere else. He grilled me (partially nicely) with lots of uncanny and some “normal” interview questions: role model, where I want to be in 5 years, etc. Took crazy notes on scrap paper and said I did great. Later a junior at my school whose friend has him as a physics & calculus tutor said that he brought up my name and said I performed the best out of all his interviewees this year. Go figure. I thought I bombed most of the questions. I 'uhhhhh…'ed a lot LOL
[] Art Supplement:
NO. there are more than enough people out there more talented than I am at violin, piano, and alto sax, combined. I am in jazz band though :)

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 3-4 days before deadline? O_O

Rubik’s cube - 15 second solves; sent a video of a 13.76-sec solve on a CD with my counselor’s rec and transcript and such. Hope they had fun with it  Great essay writing (?) I’ve been told I have a way with words, apparently HAHAHAS.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: grades (spanish aside), rank, SAT IIs (I BEASTED ALL OF THEM YO!), Rubik’s cube! >:) MUAHAHAHA
[] Weaknesses: Asian, public school isn’t magnet or specialized (quite the opposite actually…), but doesn’t downright suck, either. It’s pretty moderate in terms of grades and smartness of people in general.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rubik’s cube? O_O I don’t know how many applicants, even to MIT, have sub-15 averages -shrugs- SAT II grades were definitely a plus (haven’t seen another CCer with 5 800s yet :p)
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
not much, really. maybe I should’ve paid more attention in my Spanish classes so my grades wouldn’t have been too terrible there HAHAHAS. might’ve gotten valedictorian too LOL :p

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
I’m still going to Yale through EA so WHATEVER

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: So I submitted my application in October, and I’ll be waiting until May for an actual decision. This is getting a little lame, MIT, you need to be decisive.

Pick one:
Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2360 (760 M, 800 W, 800 CR)
[] SAT I superscore (breakdown): 2380 (780 M)
[] ACT (breakdown): Did not send. Was a 34
[] ACT superscore (breakdown): Took it only once.
[] SAT II: 800 Math 2, 800 Chem, 800 Bio, 760 World History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Weighted GPA: 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School, annoyingly, does not rank
[] AP (place score in parentheses): 5s: World History, Bio, Chem, Cal BC.
[] IB (place score in parentheses): NA
[] Senior Year Course Load: All dual-credit (my hs is strange - all our classes are dual-credit and we take classes from uni profs with uni students): World Lit (6 credit hours), US history (6 credit hours), Engineering Physics (6 credit hours + lab 2 cred hours), Lin Al (3 crd hr), Diff eq (3 crd hr), Stats (3 crd hr), Multivariable Cal (3 crd hr), Macroecon (3 crd hr), Polisci (3 crd hr)
[] Number of other RD applicants in your school: Wish I knew, but probably between 10-15.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] USABO Silver Medal (2010), Siemens Regional Finalist (2010)
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Tutoring, AcDec, flute, a bunch of random stuff.
[] Job/Work Experience: NA, unless you count research, and technically speaking, I didn’t get paid by the lab, I got paid by my school.
[li] Volunteer/Community service:[/ul] Again, a lot of random stuff.
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Reading. 5? 4?[/li][] Department at MIT: Bio and Phys (wrote two separate essays, actually, and stuck the phys one in additional info). 5? 6?
[] Fav attribute of personality?: My impatience. Really a plug about how I’d be a good researcher. Risky essay, but I think I pulled it off okay. 7.
[] World You Come From: My father (who immigrated from China with like 20 swiss francs). Um. 4?
[] Significant Challenge: Math competition I failed miserably in, plugged my USABO credentials as well. Had some awesome lines: “one cannot call Mulligans on math competitions”
[] Other:[/ul] NA
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Never saw it, but teacher liked me. (Offered me a spot as his grader, actually, although I didn’t get the call in time)
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Ditto.
[] Counselor Rec: I would love to have seen that. School uses a strange system - we have academic counselors and a “college counselor”, and it’s the later who writes these recs. Hope she got some good info from my academic counselor, who did love me.
[] Additional Rec: Research mentor (who was also my chem prof). Probably likes me.
[] Interview: Either a complete disaster or not all that bad, I’m not sure. First interview, was somewhat unprepared, and…yeah.

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nope
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: USABO, Siemens, strong math and science classes
[] Weaknesses: Interview, a couple of my essays, and probably the fact that I got my high school years wrong and had to contact them saying, “oh, btw, my math sucks since I can’t subtract right and I started HS in '07, not '06. Duh I’m an idiot” (paraphrased, of course)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: USABO, Siemens.
[] What would you have done differently?: Worked harder on the essays, gotten leadership, things like that.[/ul]
