[] Interview: My downfall. What happened was that the EC in my region went BERSERK (I’m not even kidding) and refused to interview me or anyone else from my school because according to him we were late in scheduling the interview even though we contacted him several weeks before the December 10 deadline. MIT didn’t assign me a different EC for some reason. I then asked them to waive my interview and they did, saying the lack of it wouldn’t put me at a disadvantage (Yeah right…).

Other Factors:
**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: At least I can proudly tell my kids I got rejected by MIT. Seriously, though, I’m happy that I applied. Those who got in really deserve it! **

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Robotics (captain), SNHS (president), Newspaper (editor in chief), Academic team/quiz bowl, swim team, piano, orchestra (viola)
[] Job/Work Experience: Summer intern at a chemical pharmaceutical company
[li] Volunteer/Community service: volunteer at local hospital for the past five years[/ul]
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Rubik’s cube[/li][] Department at MIT: CSAIL, media lab, robotics
[] What You Do That’s Creative?: I fix problems with mechanical tweaks, I’m really hands on. I fix things.
[] World You Come From: We move a lot. Change.
[] Significant Challenge: Being a girl in robotic, on a male team, then becoming captain
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Didn’t read
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: Didn’t read
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read
[] Additional Rec: Didn’t read, from a robotics mentor (who was also my ex boyfriend’s dad XDD)
[] Interview: yep. Interviewed for EA. First interview. So nervous! But it was pretty colloquial.
[] Art Supplement: none
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: November?
[] State (if domestic applicant): SC
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Ghetto, 3A
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: dunno, middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None. No hooks. No significant prizes in science or math. Never past a state level.[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Robotics, passion, leadership
[] Weaknesses: no sci/math major awards, no research paper, crappy first time essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really didn’t expect to get in, especially with my lack of ISEF or Siemens or perfect math scores (I’m quite terrible at math competitions). I really hated my essays after submitting, so my mid year report had more “me” in it.
[] What would you have done differently?: I wouldn’t have applied EA. I would have given my application more time, wrote more about me rather than molding me to their standards.[/ul]

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
To those waitlisted or rejected: You’re still here, and you’re still amazing, and you’re going to have fun and change the world no matter where you spend four years of your life. Never give up!
To prospectives: This, I guess, is proof that you don’t have to win >9000 awards in STEM to get into nerdy places. Test scores aren’t everything. Be yourself, and you’ll be happy with where you end up.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown):2330 (800M, 800CR, 730W)
[] SAT II: 800 Math 2, 800 Mol Bio, 800 Chinese w/Listening, 760 Spanish (2nd take, 1st was 700)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9? I don’t actually know, my transcript for my school doesn’t show unweighted GPA, but I got 2 B+s, one junior year and one senior year
[] Weighted GPA: 5.68
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank, but if it did I probably would not even be in the top twenty because it’s so competitive and there is rampant grade inflation…
[] AP (place score in parentheses): World History 5, Bio 5, Stats 5, Calc BC 5, US History 4 (self-studied), US Gov/Pol 4
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Chem, AP English, Research with a prestigious lab, Mathematical Modeling, Spanish Language, Multivariable Calculus, AP Micro/Macroeconomics, Organic Chemistry
[] Number of other RD applicants in your school: Lots…I have no idea how many exactly, but I personally know at least 20 other people who applied. MIT is definitely a popular destination at our school. I know 3 people who got in EA and 2 more RD.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): USABO semifinalist, National Merit Finalist, 1st place for various regional academic competitions[/li][/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): 3 varsity sports (captain of one, MVP), founder of a club, prez of 3 clubs, student gov positions throughout the years, taught a seminar, play 2 instruments, tons of other stuff I won’t specify for anonymity
[] Job/Work Experience: Research intern, English teacher
[li] Volunteer/Community service: 300+ hours for various projects/clubs, camp counseling, museum arts coordinator, etc. [/li][/ul]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Building things, wrote about lots of stuff I’ve done over the years, such as woodworking, web design, making a fuel cell car, remodeling a room, 8/10 [/li][] Department at MIT: Biology, kind of vague, 6/10
[] What You Do That’s Creative?: Something about math modeling related to a work of art, 7/10
[] World You Come From: Talked about growing up in a tech-y suburban area, random snippets of experiences, family hardships, 8/10
[] Significant Challenge: Interning at a research center in a town where I’d never been before and only knew 1 person in (in a foreign country), 8/10
[] Other: Included my research project abstract, 8/10 [/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: My research teacher that also sponsors an academic team I lead, expected me to get in to all the Ivies I applied to+MIT, 9/10
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: An English teacher who is also my academic advisor. I really have no idea if this sucked or kicked ass, because I’m not sure what he really thinks of me. I fell asleep most of the time in his classes…haha. He never called me out for it and I aced both of his classes. 7/10
[] Counselor Rec: No clue, I only met my counselor like twice before she left our school and she probably just based it off the activities I told her about. 6/10
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: FANTASTIC. At least, I think it was. It lasted for an hour and a half, and we kept talking about random stuff. My interests were completely different from my interviewer’s, but we didn’t clash and had a really interesting conversation. We talked about building catapults, hacking at MIT (he told me about climbing on the roof of a building by the Charles River to watch fireworks and advised me how to go about hacking…“you’ve gotta do it at least once, just find somebody really experienced and don’t get caught” lol.), research, etc. At first I thought he was going to be really formal and all because he’s a professor, but he was a genuinely cool guy to talk to who got me way more interested in MIT. The only thing that worried me was when I asked about the social scene and he talked about bonding every night over problem sets…hahahaha. I’m hoping he was joking. 9/10
[] Art Supplement: Piano recording, I’ve played for 12 years, so it was at least decent. My piano teacher keeps telling me I should become a concert pianist, but he’s given up on me going to Juilliard or the Curtis Institute…and now that I’m into MIT…zero chance! 7/10
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Definitely the last day

[] Income Bracket: Middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none[/ul]

Reflection
[] What You Do That’s Creative?:
[] World You Come From:
[] Significant Challenge:
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: 11th grade English teacher who deeply respects my work. He has told me that I’m one of the most deep-probing and high-striving students he’s taught.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: 10th and 11th grade chemistry teacher. She highly respects my work ethic and has nominated me for the Rensselaer medal.
[] Counselor Rec: I don’t know about this one but I am guessing that it was good
[] Additional Rec: I taught through a prestigious and very challenging summer teacher internship in 2010, and the director praised me highly throughout the entire program as well as afterwards. He wrote my supplementary recommendation and was really excited about it.
[] Interview: um I was a little worried about this one because the interviewer looked down at his laptop 80% of the time and also spent half the interview asking me over and over if I work well in groups. But I guess the interview went well enough to get me in

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Um. I’m pretty good at math. My essays were really strong. I’m really different from most of the kids I know who applied. (It’s hard to tell through what I’ve revealed here, but my essays show my uniqueness and dedication.) [/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays and recommendations.
[] Weaknesses: I don’t have anywhere close to straight A’s
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I am really dedicated to what I do and more importantly I try really hard to be a good person and I guess MIT saw that.
[] What would you have done differently?: Nothing because I did the best I can and that’s all I can expect from myself[/ul]

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:I can’t believe this. Senior year has been so difficult for me and I have had to deal with a lot of painful things in the past few years. I tried to not let that affect my academic life but I am sure it did. Through it all I kept doing my best because that is what matters the most. I honestly thought I wouldn’t get in to MIT because I am so different from the high-achieving math/science students around me. But I guess MIT liked what I presented to them. To everyone, if you are accepted congratulations, you deserve it so much, and if you are not, always remember that a college decision does not change who you are as a person; you still have so much talent and potential within you and nothing can take that away from you. I’ll leave you with what my 8-year-old brother tells me all the time: the most important thing is to just do your best and to be a good person.
