Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):
Essays (Include Subjects):
Common App Main:

  • Failure -
  • I wrote about coming in second place in the state 400M dash. Feedback from my teachers and other classmates said it was fantastic, I'd think it was around a 7 or 8.</p>

EC Short Answer:
(I’m assuming this means the Mudd essays)

First: why did I apply to Mudd?

  • I wrote about my various visits to the campus, how I loved all of the opportunities that the school offered, such as access to a metal shop and the electronics graveyard. I said that I loved the community and how close the place seemed, describing everything that made it a perfect fit for me. I thought it was about an 8.

Second: What would I do to impact the world?

  • I definitely took the creative approach here, explaining my plan to colonize the Moon and Mars. It was a little out there, and feedback wasn’t fantastic, so around a 6.

Teacher Recommendation #1:

  • Pretty good I’d say, I didn’t have her for long but she was really nice and a great writer. Probably a 6 or 7.
    Teacher Recommendation #2:
  • Definitely shining. I haven’t read it, but I’ve had this teacher for five years as my physics teacher and he definitely has nothing but praise for me. I’d be surprised if it were below a 10.
    Counselor Rec:
  • The counselor for the school is new this year, but I had a chance to go on a week long college road trip with her and 50 kids from my school. She likes me a lot and when I asked her about my rec she said it was great. I’d say around 8.
    Additional Rec: n/a
    Art Supplement: n/a
    Research Supplement:
  • I didn’t write anything in my Common App, but the admissions counselor of Arizona knew that our school has senior research projects, and she knew specifically of my project that I’m doing on coding and automated testing. She also knew that I would be giving a presentation with a few others on Quantum Tunneling in February to my school.

Date Submitted App:

  • Public Charter
    Ethnicity:

    Gender:
  • Male
    Income Bracket:
  • ~180k, with two other siblings going to college at the same time.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): n/a i think

Reflection
Strengths:

  • Strong test scores, super strong recs, solid extracurriculars.
    Weaknesses:
  • Probably not the best essays, could have had a better GPA.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
  • I have not a single Idea on this one. I figured it was highly selective and that it would be about a 50/50 for accepted or deferred, but i never even thought that I would get rejected. My guess is that colleges have been garnering a hatred toward my school (BASIS Scottsdale) or that they did not think my family would be able to pay tuition with sending three kids to college.
Where else have you been accepted/deferred/rejected:
  • Accepted to U of A honors, ASU Barrett.
What would you have done differently?:
  • I would have worked harder to increase my GPA, and tried harder to secure a solid internship last summer.

Other Factors:

  • The admissions counselor knows who I am, and the other applicant, and is in contact with my college counselor. They talked last Friday and the counselor said that she was excited to hear about us and how everything was going.

All in all, I was extremely disappointed in the decision I was given, and though it may sound arrogant and entitled, I can’t help but believe there was some kind of mistake in the process.

Decision: Defferred

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):
Essays (Include Subjects):
Common App Main: I chose the “challenging a belief” topic and wrote about how I chose to confront my serious hatred of vegetables (don’t worry, it was more insightful than it sounds). I was quite witty and sarcastic in it, as I usually am. It was pretty good, I guess, so I give myself a 9.

EC Short Answer:

  • Supplement 1: I wrote about the well-rounded education and the close-knit community that HMC has to offer. I related all these back to a central story about my dad and I - how he would use every opportunity to teach (aka lecture) me about different things and how I always admired how he seemed to know everything. I wrote that I aspire to become someone like him, but also to pursue my own future and my own goals at HMC. Maybe a 9 as well.
  • Supplement 2: I wrote about how foreigners never fit in in Japan - how even after 14 years, I’m still considered an outsider and limited by boundaries of judgment or appearance. I wrote about how I want to overcome these superficial boundaries to really unite the world without prejudice and judgment, and that technology is the vessel that carries this change. Not my favourite essay, so I’d say a 6 or a 7 for this one.

Teacher Recommendation #1: AP Physics teacher, taught me science since Middle School, knows me really well. Definitely a great essay - especially because we joke with each other all the time. Definite 10.
Teacher Recommendation #2: AP World History teacher, taught me history/AP since 9th grade. He doesn’t know me as well but he sees the best in people and knows how hard I work in school. Hopefully an 8 or a 9?
Counselor Rec: Our counselor was new - just came one year ago - but I have helped her out so much for college visits and whatnot (I’ve often been the assigned college visit coordinator) and she and I joke around and send witty emails all the time so I have no doubt in the praise that she would include. I have no idea about her writing abilities or what so I’m thinking a 9 or a 10?
Additional Rec: None
Art Supplement: None
Research Supplement: None

Other
Date Submitted App: Around 2 days before the ED due date.
State (if domestic applicant): N/A
Country (if international applicant): Japan
School Type: Private, Girls-only, Catholic
Ethnicity: Half Asian (Japanese), Half White (French)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Fairly high ($300Kish?) but with siblings and high foreigner taxes, looking into scholarships since I don’t apply for financial aid.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None in particular.

Reflection
Strengths: My test scores (SATs) were great and my essays really showed my wit and true sarcastic nature so I think it was a genuine and strong representation of me and my abilities.
Weaknesses: The lack of a GPA/rank made it hard to identify my place within my school (because EVERYONE in my class is crazy smart), and also, having an AP Computer Science exam might have helped my cause.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m a female aspiring to major in CS and I have strong test scores, high grades, and really supportive teachers. What more is there to say?
Where else have you been accepted/deferred/rejected: Since it was ED, I couldn’t/didn’t apply anywhere else. Based on finances, I will decide my final applications/enrollment.
What would you have done differently?: Not much in particular actually. When I visited Stanford 2 years ago, I probably would have liked to visit the HMC campus as well though.

Other Factors:

  • I exchanged several emails with the Dean of Admissions and the head of Financial Aid for help, and it did contain a bit of polite, casual conversation which may have helped get my name into the heads of the admissions people.
  • Just overall, I tried not to appear to be something that I’m not! I was totally true to myself in everything that I wrote or included.

I heard back today. I applied ED II, But i havent checked yet. Anyone applied ed II and heard back?
