Official Acceptance Thread

I think the academics are really good - I took the toughest course load possible in high school and didn't get anything out of it. Now I do study all the time and have a lot of work, but it's really interesting and class discussions are usually good too. I'm in Honors, so those classes tend to move a bit faster or have a bit more work as well; but my other classes are good too.

My choice was between American and the College of William and Mary.. and I'm glad I chose American.

do you find a big difference between honors and non-honors classes? The level of work, the grading, the discussions, the people in them? etc?

also, are the honors students united at all? is there a sense of community within the program, or as a university as a whole?

There is not a huge difference between nonhonors and honors - except the other students in the honors classes tend to be more studious and the classroom experience generally improves because of this (in terms of discussions, etc.). the classes are also all small, while there are some larger lecture classes in certain intro classes. the level and amount of work is above the other intro classes, but it's nothing I haven't been able to handle, and going more in depth into the subjects i'm interested in has been great.

like with any program, you can choose whether to get really involved or not. since there are honors floors in the dorms, the people that live on those tend to make more friends who are within honors than those who live elsewhere. the honors program also holds a lot of outings and lectures and events, so a lot of the same people go on those as well. so yes, there is some community within the honors program - but it's up to each person whether that's where they spend time.

I got my acceptance to American and the Honors program this week...also got the presidential scholarship (but only 15,000)...nutrasweet and sideways...what stats did you have to garner full tuition? I was kind of dissappointed because I thought I would get more merit money from American...especially since I was getting that much from higher-caliber schools already. Oh well...

cboryca what are your stats? I got a presidential scholarship also (same amount) and an invitation into that new University Scholars program, but I didnt get invited into honors which kind of surprised me.

Also I got accepted into the School of Public Affairs. I dont remember applying there over arts and sciences. Im pretty sure that I applied arts and sciences to all of my schools, but Im not sure if I remember specifying anywhere on my American application. Do you think they might have just assumed I wanted Public Affairs because I put my major choice as Political Science and they dont have that in the School of Arts and Sciences?
Current students, and those in the know, is the School of Public Affairs anything special? And does it leave room for major changes etc.?
Thanx (congrats everyone again!)

They are my S stats so it isn't my place to share them. We were all surprised but he does have great stats. He is going to the Honors Overnight. American is a top choice but not THE top choice yet. He is still waiting to hear from 3 schools in the east in April and 1 scholarship award from a school he was already accepted to.

If you put political science down as your major, that's probably why you got put in SPA (because the poli sci dept is within that school), but if you want to change your major, it's not a big deal, and you can switch schools easily

cboryca:
~4.20/weighted 4.9 unweighted. ;8 AP - all 5's; 1440 SAT 1; 3 SATS all above 700; good essay, good but not exceptional ec's; and aweomse awesome recommendations.

I knew i was above the average at American, but I certainly wasn't excepting full tutition.

Seems like they give out a TON of merit money to get the top kids to attend, they probably know a lot of them will consider turning it down anyway.

yeah, when i applied last year, i had a 1480, 4.2 gpa, 770 writing sat II, US history 660 i think, 8 AP classes, tons of EC's, including three big leadership roles... and i was hoping for like $10K or $15, and was extremely suprised to get full tuition

Yeah...I knew American was way down on my list...I guess I have been spoiled by my other schools and expected more for little to no reason...
My stats are: 1410 SAT (that's probably what hurt me), 4.0 UW GPA, 4 AP classes with all 5s, attended drama magnet...was in lots of plays, drama club, film club, varsity softball (captain) and golf, newspaper editor, NHS, Student Government...and the list goes on.

yea i also got invited to that university college program. did everyone? also...i received a letter from the dean of the school of public affairs saying i was one of the stronger applicants and they wanted me to keep in touch and everything, but i wasn't admitted to the honors program. whats the deal?

has anyone not heard yet?

hmmm...maybe the university college program is a substitute for honors?...is it school specific? Because I didn't get into that...but I did get the honors program invite.

They said the 28000 financial aid package I got was the max. That leaves me with with 17k loans a year (including 5k in their package) I am not at all impressed with their financial aid. I don't want to borrow that much money. I might have even gone to American University over William & Mary, but it just costs way too much. Now I have to win a lot of the private scholarships I applied to to even consider American. Needless to say, I am ****ed.
