Hey, I'm just wondering if anyone went to the admitted student thing today. Clearly you are there right now and won't be reading this but if anyone went, post what you thought about it. I think I'm gonna go on the one on the 28th.

I have a question for anyone out there...Is Bates good with Aid? Because I would DEFINITELY go if i get an excellent aid package! Keeping my fingers crossed

What are some other things about Bates that make it stand out amongs t other liberal arts colleges?

-Down-to-earth and accepting students
-Amazing professors (an overwhelming number of Ivy League-trained teachers that light up the classroom)
-Beautiful campus (with lots of student hangouts)
-Politically active campus (liberal student body overall, equal presence from both sides)
-Awesome party scene (with students who know how to balance social life and academics
-8th most rigorous academics among liberal arts colleges

hey thanks a lot for all that info...!!! really helpful!

So, what are some other things that make Bates really attractive or should I say appealing to a person? I havent visited Bates but will be soon hopefully, and so I would appreciate anyYYY information pertaining to Bates and what other current students think about it....

People say Bates' campus might be beautiful but its boring and its big on drinking etc etc. Myths are always out there and drinking will always be present at schools but coz i dont drink...im just asking. Even though im big on parties.

How are the jobs that are available after a Bates' student graduates? What type of study abroad programs are especially noteworthy? Thanks guys!

I don't know where people are coming from to say that the Bates Campus is boring. There's something to do every night, from lectures to bands to the occasional dance or student dinner.
In response to the fact that Bates is big on drinking, I know plenty of chem-free kids that love their experience at Bates. If you are looking for an environment away from drinking you can always stay in one of the chem-free dorms.

Bates has one of the best and most popular study abroad programs in the country. Lots of students study outside the US for a semester, and all of them seem to like their experiences.

As for jobs after graduation, finding one shouldn't be a problem. Bates has very successful alumni. One I know got a job at the office of the RNC chairman, his first year out of Bates. My cousin who is class of 2000 is a very successful nurse practicioner.

I highly encourage you to visit the campus to see for yourself. Go on an overnight visit, sit in on a class, and get a good feel for what Bates is like

Hey thedreamer,
I think I am probably gonna go to bates next year so I will try to give you some insight into why it is my first choice.
First of all, I loved the campus when I visited. It's very New Englandly and had lots of leaves in the fall.
I have also heard great things about the people at Bates. My tour guide and everyone else I have talked to seems to emphasize how nice everyone is and how different groups of people interact.
I have never heard anything about the Bates campus being boring. If you visit their website, you can find stuff about all the club meetings, plays, shows, lectures, and sporting events that are always happening. The town of Lewiston may not be that great but there are trips to Freeport, Boston, Portland, and Sugarloaf almost every weekend.
I am also a little worried about the drinking at Bates, so I think I'll probably live in chem-free at least my first year so I don't feel forced to drink to have fun. So if you go to Bates, you can always hang out with me!!!
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me.

Hey thegwall and rachie! thanks a lot for all this info! it really is helpful!!!

I think youre comments were really good and yes ill go and visit the campus soon, but my going to bates is solely contingent upon the fact that I get a really good aid package! How do you think is Bates in giving aid? Ive heard that being an excellent and top notch liberal arts school, it has a lot in endowments and so they admit students with the intention that they wud definitely come to their school and they attract ppl becoz of their need based aid packages. I dont know as of now even though I am falling in love with Bates day by day...

Do u guys think i shud call up the Fin Aid office or something and talk to their Director or someone and tell them my situation...? I dont know. I dont wanna act cheesy u know..lol.

Another thing, does anyone know how many were admitted and what was the total # of applicants...

thanks guys!

When you visit the campus stop by the Financial Aid office in the Libbey Forum, they are very good at convincing you that there are always ways to afford Bates.

Bates does have good financial aid, from what I've heard, especially if you're an international or minority student (i guess a form of financial affirmative action).

I don't know this years numbers, but the acceptance rate for first-years is likely around 24-25% this year.

HEY RACHIE3953 AND THEGWALL822

Im An International Fdrom Pakistan, And I Applied Regular.
Its The 4th Of April Today, And I Still Have To Get My Decision.

A Friend Of Mine Got His Rejection From Bates A Week Ago, So Does This Mean That They Send Rejections Earlier, And So Should I Feelk Happy That I Did Not Rtecieve It Eatlier along with my friend.

How Much Does An Intervbiew Count Coz I Had A Great One..

Ans If Sat Is Optional Then Do They Dfifferentiate B/w Those Whop Submit And Those Whodonot? Does It Matter If We Submnit Our Sts Or Not?

do they give good aid coz i applied fora lot, and how much of the package is loan???

also what abt the facvillioties there, afterall in the end what matters are bthe facillioties.
im from palkistanm so u guys from americaq can really help me.
thnsx guys.

yo Omair..chill out man. u have another separate post saying the same exact thing!

You should be getting your decision soon. Im from Pakistan too, but living in the US. Being an Aitchisonian doesnt give you a huge boost in your application, in fact, its nothing. An international applicant who has stellar scores and extraordinary achievements who applies from a village school could get into an ivy so its no big deal. Even though a lot of Aitchisonians apply each year, it just makes it more competitive for you if they have better scores.

I read your other posts and all and you said you had a 1230 SAT score. I dont know whether or not you got into Yale or other competitive schools, but SAT's are a major thing. If unfortunately you do hear any rejections, I would say it is because of your SAT score..The rest I think you have pretty good credentials.

Are you definitely planning on coming to the states to study?

yes im hoping to,
i know i have pathetic sat1 score, thats coz i planned it all poorly.
however i have 280 in my TOEFL, and 760CHEM, 750PHY, AND 730WRI, IN MY SAT2.

AND BY THE WAY, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AITCHISON IS THE ONLY SCHJOOL OTHER THAN KARACHI GRAMMAR BSCHOOL WHOSE STUDENTS GET INTO GOOD PLACES.
THIS YEAR A FRIEND OF MINE GOT INTO STANFORD, MIT, AND WILLIAMS.
ANOTHERE INTO YALE,AND ANOTHER INTO PRINCETON.
THERE THERE WERE THESE WHO GOT INTO GRINNELL, CONNECTICUT, ANF F AND M, OHIO WESLEYAN.
EVERYBODY GOT INTO CANADIAN ANFD UIK UNIVERSITIES.
SO WHILE AITCHISON DOESNOT REALLY GET U IN, IOT SURELY ADDS TO UR CVB. BELIEVE ME IT DOES.
P.S THERE WAS NO REASON OTHERWISE THAT A YALE REPRESENTAITIVE VISITED ONLY AZITCHISON OUT MOF ALL THESCHOOLS IN LAHORE, EARLIER THIS YEAR.
BY THE WAY THNX FOR REPLYING, THOUGH.

Yeah I know..KGS and Aitchison have the most ppl who get into good univs from Pak. But the thing is, if the Admissions Committee sees your application and if they dont see something unique or extraordinary from the other international applicant pool, then it becomes competitive.

It doesnt matter if your SAT I is avg..i dont think it should affect you that much, but still, ivies want everything to be perfect you know and like top of the line.

Which other univs did you get accepted to? And where do you really plan to go? A lot of Aitchisonians also apply to Penn State University, Rochester and all...did you apply there?

P.S: your keyboard really looks screwed man! the letters and all are jumbled up..haha

Doesn't Bates have a "optional SAT" policy?

Yep, it does...so if someone has a "not so hot" SAT/ACT score, that person can just not send it in...which is what I did and got accepted.

It's interesting to note that despite this policy the average SAT score at bates is around 1360 (and that's for MATRICULATED students, who are required to submit their SAT scores for statistic purposes even if they didn't before). That's higher than Colby's (which requires test scores). It's a great policy, it works, and it proves that tests don't show much except that you're good at taking tests.

My numbers are not great (also I am an example that SATs are not a good representation of academic potential, as schools like Bates and Bowdoin recognize) but I am showing for future prospectives who think their numbers are not good enough, that if you show a devotion to learning, you can do anything.

Decision: Accepted (Transfer)

SAT: 510v, 610m (did not submit)

SAT IIs: none

GPA: highschool, 3.7, Engineering College, 3.1

Rank: (School doesn't rank {highschool or college})

Other stats:

Essays: Very Good. I wrote several. I submitted one on human perception, one on how a Small college would be better for me over a large university, one on my involvement in environmental and political activism. I dont know what else to say about essays, I put a lot of effort into them, if anyone would like to see them, feel free to email me.

Teacher Recs: Very good. I saw several of them. It is important to make relationships with your teachers/professors. Talk to them and show them that you are interested in what they are teaching or anything else, let them know who you are (but dont fake it, be yourself).

Counselor Rec: Good
*Other: Track and Field, cross country, Rugby, personal extensive reading on physics and philosophy (sort of what my human perception paper is about), Engineers without Borders.

Location/Person: Saratoga Springs
* State or Country: New York (upstate)
* School Type: highschool: Small Private Waldorf (also known as Rudolf Steiner, 16 kids in my graduating class)
University: Large state university
* Ethnicity: White
* Gender: Male

Other Factors:
I kept calling and emailing the admissions office and the transfer officer in particular. This is a very good thing to do. It shows that you care and they know who you are when your file come to the table. I worked hard my first semester at college. Though my numbers were not high, my teachers and professors knew that I was truly motivated to my own education. They knew I was interested in what I was learning (pick a major you love...the money will follow) and they wrote me good recommendations. Dont only show that your smart...show that you want to improve. Show that you have the drive to succeed.
Good luck to all future applicants and congratulations to all who got in!
Bates is a Great school!

cool cool jackman!
