Since the Common Application and most other apps have a restriction on the number of things you can put in your Activities section, what are you supposed to list?

For example, I'll have been a staff member on my school's literary magazine for four years this fall. But we hardly ever meet. On the other hand, I love writing all the time, but it's not really something an official person (like a teacher/supervisor) can vouch for.

That's just an example though, please also consider other situations that are similar.

Thanks, guys. CC is the best when I'm confused about something like this. :)

Unfourtanetely, this is a gray area. I play piano for about an hour a day just for fun, but I never put this on my application (probably should have). So obviously I don’t know the answer to the dilemna, but I think some options are to put your writing in additional information, count your free writing hours under what you do for the literary magazine (in the info for that activity, mention that you also do a lot of additional writing just for the fun of it), or label your free-writing as its own activity and describe it. I think the second option would be the best in your situation, where you have an activity that can umbrella your pasttime.
