I think I'm going to go jump off a bridge, this is ridiculous...
I think I'm the first person in the history of my school to get rejected by UCB or UCLA with a 3.9 UW and 1400+. No offense to most you people but I'm left scratching my head here and before you say that tests aren't everything I had good ECs too including Boy's State delegate, Varsity athlete, ASB executive board member, etc. Sigh...I guess this is the life in California now being a URM (under represented majority).

Major - Undecided (Physical Science)

Let's get real - UCLA is BS because now they want people who have had to "struggle." You guys who have much higher stats than these other people and have been denied, don't think its because of you. It's because you aren't poor or a minority. Pretty much the people who are first generation, are minority, or are poor are given lax on their stats and UCLA bites at this. UCLA wants to beef up their "diversity" and they got it. If letting in a bunch of minorities will make their school better, then they got it. All we know is that they are turning away a bunch of people who deserve to go there and who have lived in California all their life, for minorities. Thanks a bunch, UCLA.

what are you talking about man? i got in and im an asian living in a relatively wealthy/upper middle class neighborhood in the OC and I got in..and im not first generation either and ive also lived in california all of my life

grovvygrrlxoxo:

Isn't that a bit harsh?

Students who receive low test scores are necessarily unqualified applicants. Using myself as an example, my SAT score fell below a 1300 (1270 to be precise), but I took classes at UCLA and did well in them. Does that automatically mean that since I have low test scores I should be rejected, besides already proving to the admissions committee that I am capable of university level work?

It is understandable that applicants with incredibly excellent SAT scores and extraordinary GPAs may have had their egos brusied, but there has to be a valid reason why. Counselors may call UCLA Undergraduate Admission and find out why.

The nature of the competition must be looked at. Comparing a student who attends a school that offers 20 APs and a student who attends a school that offers 10 APs doesn't quite seem fair. Unless the state uniformly applies the same standard to each school (in terms of classes offered, etc) an admissions counselor cannot make an objective judgment about the nature of the competition.

Public schools are not the only universities that do this. Private schools exercise this concept of comparing students with similar backgrounds.

It should be noted that there were URMs, first gen, and low-income with incredible scores and GPA who were rejected.

Out of state---accepted---they're prob. still uploading---refresh it and see

bcp, that sounds sketchy to me...appeal for sure, something isn't right there.

Ouch, I guess you're saying I didn't deserve to get in just because I'm a minority. Maybe I should've tried to changed high schools. I should've gone to a school that has a high average SAT score, isn 't 60% hispanic, and offers a lot more AP classes. Maybe if my parents didn't have money problems when they were kids, then they wouldn't have to quit high school to support their families and they could've had better paying jobs now. Come on, a lot of things are out of my control, so does that mean I should end up at UCR? I know a lot of you will end up at other schools that are just as good, if not better than UCLA. I also had GREAT essays and I didn't even talk about any hardships, so I don't want people thinking I got in because I'm a minority.

groovygrrl, I am not a minority (fall in the Asian category, asian-indian), and my family is well off. I got a 1370 on my SAT's. I've lived in Cali my whole life, and I am not a first generation college student. I got into UCLA. I personally think you are being a bit harsh and jumping to conclusions.

Give them a break, they had over 42000 applications, that's insane. They'll probably make some mistakes along the way. Luckily, a mistake wasn't made on my acceptance.
