GPA: 4.5612W

Location/Person:

State or Country: NJ

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: Asian/Caucasian

Gender: Male

major strength/weakness: I'm modest.

why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: SO PRINCETON WOULD ACCEPT ME INSTEAD!!!

Other Factors: I talked to my admissions counselor several times on the phone, responded to her after I got deferred with what she said the committee wanted to know about me, and knew someone on the Board of Columbia who contacted the admissions office for me.

I was a tad disappointed at the time, but getting into Princeton made me feel a whole lot better and reminded me how fickle the ivies can be and how getting accepted or rejected is nothing personal. I still love Columbia, and I still think it's a great school, and still wish I had gotten in, but I know that it's not the end of the world and that as long as I end up some place where I'm happy it'll all be OK.

Decision: waitlisted (at all 3 of my top choices... w. t. f.)

Decision: ACCEPTED into the Columbia school of General Studies and the list college of the Jewish Theological Seminary (I'm really excited about meeting everyone.)

Stats:
SAT:1410

Rank:~10/350
Other stats: Decent EC's (Co-editor of Newspaper, All-County team etc.)

Teacher Recs:The one that I read was good
Counselor Rec:Didn't see
Hook (if any):Well, my Aunt and Uncle went to the same program, and I really wanted the awesome experience of Columbia with a equally awesome religious education.
Location/Person:
State or Country:GA

Decision: ACCEPTED (CC, John Jay Scholar)

Stats:

SAT: 1550 (800V/750M)

SAT IIs: 800 Wr/800 M2C /760 Lit

GPA: 3.92 UW, 5.0 W

Rank: 3 out of 1045

Other stats: 5 in Stats, Lang, American Hist, Euro Hist; 8 AP Classes Senior Year; National Merit Finalist

Subjective:

Essay: Chose my own topic and I will assume that it made all the difference

Teacher Recs: Both teachers know me very well, and one is the science Department Chair

Counselor Rec: My counselor is very enthuastic about me even though she just met me this year; the recommendation most likely reflected that (I suppose it is, to be unoriginal, a 'wow factor' of sorts)

Hook (if any): Literature (EC's and achievements were mainly related to short stories being published in various contests/magazines)

Location/Person:

State or Country: Florida

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: Chinese

Gender: Male

major strength/weakness: Strength: The essay. Weakness: I had, as a grand total, 2 leadership roles, 1 internship, 2 community service involvements, 1 job, and 2 academic competition leadership positions (with no major awards in either) -- all mostly 2 years worth of involvement, since what I did freshman year, became completely undesirable in junior year

why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: Despite the lack of commited ec's, I had high scores on everything and took the hardest schedule offered at my school. And the essay. The fact that Columbia didn't confine me to a specific topic allowed me to use real words: no tear jerker emotion pulling, or humour involved, but a rationed short narrative about why I chose to write instead of joining the status quo (or the water polo team, take your pick.) In short, I was a very one-sided applicant who lucked out with good SAT/SAT II scores

hello everybody. i got waitlisted, and i'm confused..if i accept the waitlist, does that mean that if i get accepted by columbia, i'll have to go there and not go to the place i enroll at by may 1st? i got into dartmouth and penn, and i really don't know where to go, so if i do get accepted off the columbia waitlist, can i have the option of declining that acceptance?
