Applied for Financial Aid? Yes but ineligible for need-based

Ethnicity: white
Gender: male
School Type: 1 of the top 10 public schools in TX
Strengths: ACT score, tough courseload, mostly 4s and 5s on APs (5 in CS), strong essays, strong commitment to CS. I don’t know if this matters, but I visited the school and met with a CS advisor.
Weaknesses: class rank/ gpa
Advice to future prospective students?:
Additional Comments: i got a blue & gold scholarship of $4500/yr. nice, but hard to compete w/ resident tuition at UT austin where i also got in. Also, my UW letter didn’t say whether I was direct admitted to CS, so that is a big ? right now.

Decision: Accepted

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.86
SAT Score: 1870
ACT Score: 27
AP Classes: 11 APs (Psych, Calc AB, Physics B, English Lit., Microecon, World History, Computer Science, US History, Chemistry, Spanish, Biology)
IB: Not offered at my school.

Extracurriculars: Political Youth League
Leadership: Associated Student Body
Volunteer/Community Service: Ride to Walk Community Service (100+ hours from here)
Job/ Work Experience: Cashier (fast food)
Essays: Both pretty good and definitely unique. I decided not to do the typical hardship/sob story, and one of mine focused on the idea of fear and the culture one focused on my experience in a temple.
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, but I don’t think my income is low enough to receive anything. Hopefully will get that Purple and Gold Scholarship though.
Intended Major: Psychology.
In-State?: (if yes, please indicate which city) Nope, I’m from NorCal.
Ethnicity: Asian Indian (Indian American)
Gender: Female
School Type: Typical 4-year public high school.
Strengths: My GPA, my AP class load, and my essays.
Weaknesses: My test scores. Also although we could only list 5 activities in the log, I probably could’ve had stronger EC’s.
Advice to future prospective students?: Even if you feel 100% sure that you won’t get in—you’ll be surprised.
Additional Comments: Since we could only list 5 activities in the activity log, everything I mentioned is what I put in my application. I’ve done more extracurriculars, however I did not mention them in my application. I’ve had my unofficial transcript load and I received the congratulatory message on my application, so now I’m just waiting for the golden ticket to all of my life’s dreams.

In-State?: Nope, from CA (Southern)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
School Type: Large public (3000+ students)
Strengths: GPA, worked with choral director from uDub before, emotional essay
Weaknesses: SAT, few AP courses
Advice to future prospective students?: Get help with essays. I’m pretty sure my essay and my GPA were the things that got me in. Don’t worry about the SAT too much but if you can, you should try to take a class for it (they’re revising it anyways, though), and maybe try the ACT.
Additional Comments: I haven’t gotten my letter but my transcript loaded and I checked my application and there it was! I really want to go to uDub but the out of state tuition is really pushing me away. If I can get enough scholarship and loan money, hopefully I can afford it.

Congratulations to everyone here! @aringu‌ Are you from MId-Pac? If so, good to see people from the great 808!

Decision: ACCEPTED
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.39
SAT Score: 1890
ACT Score: 32
AP Classes: none
IB: n/a
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP Government, AP English Literature, Anatomy/Physiology, Band, Video Production, Morality/Scriptures
Major Awards: Nope!
Extracurriculars: Video Production for All 4 years of high school (Participated in state-wide programs), VEX Robotics, Programming, Band
Volunteer/Community Service: 120 hours (Serving at Honolulu Marathon, Tutoring for school, various beach cleanups)
Job/ Work Experience: Worked at local zoo as sales associate
Essays: I worked a lot about global perspectives using my personal experiences. Hawaii is a very diverse place and I wrote a lot about that while working in my personal narrative.
Applied for Financial Aid? Hell yeah
Intended Major: Computer Science (Was not DA’ed from unofficial transcript)
In-State?:Nope, from Hawaii
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
School Type: Private Catholic School
Strengths: Test-scores, very steep positive grade trend from freshman/sophomores years, extracurricular and work experiences.
Weaknesses: GPA is hella low, no “pop-out” award/Community service, AP’s were pretty nonexistent.

Advice to future prospective students?: Place a premium on your essays. They were my saving grace and they could be yours to. Try to really “sell” yourself in your essays. If you feel uncomfortable, “sell” yourself by talking about your surroundings and what you did to change them. For a school such as UW that relies a lot on holistic review, GPA and test scores are only a part instead of the be-all end-all. Even if you aren’t confident, apply anyways!

Work hard starting from your freshman year. I was stupid and I slacked off, and I worked my ass back to the GPA I have now, which really isn’t enough for a large public university. Take your studies seriously. If your school offers AP, take the chance and take it. I had the opportunity to take AP classes in my Junior year, but I didn’t. I deeply regret that now.

Additional Comments: Udub is VERY expensive. I have had the fortunate luck to be supported by my family to attend U-dub if I really want to go, but I will probably pursue part-time jobs or loans/scholarships to help ease the burden on my parents.

Decision: Accepted
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.75
SAT Score: 2015
ACT Score: non
AP Classes: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB (5), AP Lang (3), AP Chemistry(4)
IB: n/a
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Government, AP English Literature, AP Stats, French, yearbook.
Major Awards: AP Scholar, FBLA awards
Extracurriculars: Band, Yearbook, FBLA, MUN, and other related E.C and cabinet positions.
Volunteer/Community Service: Key Club
Essays: How it’s like growing up almost alone most of the time and hardships with inner conflicts.
Applied for Financial Aid? I need everything I can get
Intended Major: Business (I forgot if I put financing or marketing or something) I think I got DA cuz my transcript did not say pre-major.
In-State?: South Cali, holla!
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
School Type: Public school
Strengths: Test-scores, decent E.C
Weaknesses: GPA is hella low, not much “leadership” roles, and did not have a lot of proofreads on the essay. (I accidentally left out my intro paragraph on one of my prompt lol)

Advice to future prospective students?: Essays, don’t procrastinate on them… GPA make sure to get it high as possible, especially if you’re out of state, we probably need higher GPA and Test scores to get in.

Work hard starting from your freshman year. My GPA tanked during one of the year due to ill time management, which is probably why I got wait listed to some colleges I applied to. Take classes you think you’ll need, don’t sign up random AP classes like I did this year…

Additional Comments: Udub is hella expensive for out of states, get all the money and aid you can if you want to go here.
