– Advice to future prospective students?: START BEING AN ACTIVE STUDENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Everything you do in high school will lead up to college, and this means any mistakes made during Freshman or Sophomore year can possibly hinder your chances into your ideal college (depending on how competitive). Start being an active student as soon as you possibly can; this means taking school seriously.Your test scores aren’t as important as you think they are, but do make sure to try your best and try at least twice. Also, be sure to take as many challenging classes as you can, focus on maintaining a high GPA, and be very active in extracurriculars and volunteering/service. When applying, do not procrastinate and have a few people look over your essays!!
– Additional Comments: I was also accepted to Washington State University, Western Washington University, Eastern Washington University, Central Washington University, and University of Portland; all of which I have received merit scholarships from. I have declined all of their admissions and will happily attend UW starting in the fall!

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.96
SAT Score: 1900
ACT Score: 29
AP Classes: APUSH, AP Physics
IB:n/a
Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics, Music Theory, Math Analysis, Humanities, and a few electives.
Major Awards: Third place in state-wide classical guitar auditions for all-state. I-Superior performance at the solo/ensemble festival. Department recognition in History and English performance (Sophomore year and Junior year, respectively), recognized by the dean for direct upward trend in Academics.
Extracurriculars: AGO, Honor Guitar Quartet, etc etc – lots of music-related ventures.
Leadership: Was the concert master for AGO for the first semester of Senior year (due to me being out of town a lot for auditions, someone else took the spot during the second semester). Section-leader for all-state ensemble. Not much besides that.
Volunteer/Community Service: Spent many hours volunteering at a nearby animal shelter during my Sophomore and Junior years. Also assisted teaching music to underclassmen at my school at some points. I’ve performed at more than a half-dozen charity concerts.
Job/ Work Experience: I’ve never had a job.
Essays: They were alright. My main essay talked about a sense of self and how my ambitions coalesced into a purpose in almost an epiphany-like manner during high school. The rest sort of fed off of that same theme, although they had different purposes.
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Music Performance
In-State?: (if yes, please indicate which city): No.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
School Type: Private school. Rigorous college-prep.
Strengths: GPA, UW music audition, essays, upward grade trend.
Weaknesses: My early grades (mostly freshman year). One-dimensional extracurriculars (while there are a lot of them, they’re all music-oriented)
Advice to future prospective students?: Admissions is not an exact science, but make sure it is clear that you are challenging yourself with your course-load. Dropping off in the rigor of coursework or in your grades during Junior and Senior year makes it look like you’re getting lazy. I would personally take 4 years of language. Take the SAT and/or ACT more than once. Also, they seem to really like upward trends, but make sure you don’t have to dig your GPA out of a hole like I did after a bad Freshman year. Find additional ways to sell yourself to them besides your grades: while bad GPA/test scores can be a deal-breaker for most competitive universities, they care about your whole story.
Additional Comments: I’m enrolling in the UW over the next few days, which I am choosing over UT Austin and several others.

Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
Intended Major: Economics
In-State?: (if yes, please indicate which city) Nope
Ethnicity: Japanese
Gender: Female
School Type: Large Public
Strengths: Test Scores, Extracurriculars
Weaknesses: Essays could have been more unique
Advice to future prospective students?: Regardless of your GPA, I would say to always try. I believe UW does their application process very holistically.
Additional Comments: Financial Aid (especially if you’re an out of state) is very tough to get at UW, especially if you’re a middle class student. Cost of Attendance is going to be very expensive
Hey guys! im applying to uw this fall for the class of 2020 and im just wondering if any on you know that if your rejected do you get the letter in the gold envelope or just a white one haha and if you guys could chance me on my thread that would be great! Congrats to all!!
You stated that your daughter failed some classes in high school. I am a Student out of state who recently got into the University of Washington. However, during the first semester of senior year i failed an online AP class. This was in part due to amount of work I had from other classes (4 other AP’s) and minor health related issues. I have never failed a class before, let alone received a C. Do you think they will resting my offer to attend the college? Thanks in advance.
