when are the decisions released?

The decions are currently available online.

I checked and it gave me a generic message saying that the time to view my decision letter was approaching and to check back later.

They accidentally posted early, and then retracted the letters/shut the portal off — very poor.

so when are the decisions officially released? haha

decisions are up…rejected…of course ugh

Decision: Waitlisted

[/ul]Reflection
[] Strengths: Nothing outstanding, just a solid student. Attended Amherst’s DivOH weekend in the fall.

Accepted: Tufts, Wesleyan, Fordham (full-tuition scholarship), Villanova, Loyola Chicago ($14k scholarship)
W/L: Amherst

[] Senior Year Course Load: AP U.S. Gov’t., AP English Lit., AP Spanish Language, AP Physics B, AP Calculus BC, orchestra
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None to speak of, really. A Brandeis Book Award and some kind of AP Scholar thing, and a Presidential Scholars candidate (though my colleges never saw this).
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate team (co-captain and -founder), Literary magazine (co-editor), Jazz band (bass), NHS and Tri-M and some other things I didn’t consider resume-worthy
[] Job/Work Experience: I work at a local hotel on the banquet staff.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Absolutely ZERO indicated on the Common App.
[] Summer Activities: Chilling with friends, reading, work, etc.
[] Essays: I thought they were great, probably my best asset. Wrote about people I work with for the common app. Amherst essay was about a controversial article I wrote for the school paper.
[] Teacher Recommendation: First one was probably amazing, because this teacher like deifies me. The second one was probably also quite good. Didn’t read either one.
[] Counselor Rec: Assuming this was also good; I know my counselor fairly well from doing debate red-tape permission-slip junk in the guidance office.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[li] Interview: Amherst doesn’t interview, lol.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): CT
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: decent public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: complicated; hoping for good aid from Amherst
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): music supplement (classical upright bass) might have helped; my bass teacher mentioned an email from someone at Amherst asking about my experience playing jazz…

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: test scores, essays, music?
[] Weaknesses: extracurriculars, total lack of volunteer work
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: who knows? Lots of really great kids at my school were waitlisted or rejected. I guess Amherst thought I had that certain je ne sais quoi.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - UConn (EA), Northeastern (EA), UChicago (EA), Carleton, Columbia, Amherst obviously //// Waitlisted - Rice [declined to remain on waitlist], Yale //// Rejected - Harvard, Brown

[/ul]General Comments: This is so exciting! I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to Chicago, Columbia, and Amherst, and I figure it will probably end up being a mostly financial decision. To those who were waitlisted/rejected: I feel your pain Many of my friends were waitlisted or rejected at their top schools last night, and I was rejected/waitlisted at two of my top choices (Brown, Yale), but I think everyone will turn out just fine. I’m glad this process is over.

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Teacher Recommendation: I’m assuming they’re good! We aren’t allowed to read them, but I love both the teachers who have written me recommendations and have done well in their classes.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably decent/good, but our school has 2000 students, so I’m not sure.
[] Additional Rec: I asked my research mentor to send a supplementary letter of recommendation.

[] Job/Work Experience:Just reffing on Sundays in the spring and fall, about 10 hrs a week
[] Volunteer/Community service: A lot of work through NJ Cares a local program, in soup kitchens and and veterans homes, some stuff in the summer at soup kitchens and some volunteer trail work
[] Summer Activities: Outdoors camps summer before 9 and 10 (2 Weeks), Outward Bound before 11 (2 Weeks), Trail Maintenance Summer before 12 (1 Week)
[] Essays: Commonapp was decent, about one of the summer camps, but not too cliche (7.5) and the amherst supplement was about service to the country, I wrote about one of the soup kitchens, and it was an interesting perspective (8.5-9), but I think that my activity description was pretty good, and it really showed how much I’m into running (9-9.5)
[] Teacher Recommendation: I got three, and I think at least two of them didn’t give the standard BS, but really told them who I was, and they didn’t leave out any bad stuff
[] Counselor Rec: I have no idea, he only covers 40 kids but it could have been hit or miss
[] Interview: Obviously no interviews at Amherst, but when an admissions rep visited my school I was the only one who went so it was a one on one thing. No idea if this helped, but I thought I did pretty well and it sure couldn’t have hurt

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] School Type: Small competitive public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender:Male
[] Income Bracket: Don’t know, but I know we don’t qualify for FA
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none, which is why I thought this was impossible

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Good grades, and I really piled it one senior year. I also think that I showed a decent amount of interest in a few activities/things (Running, the outdoors, community service that wasn’t BS trips to Costa Rica)
[] Weaknesses: White Male from an upper-middle class town, living in NJ (close to NYC)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Grades/continuity
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected:Swarthmore and Princeton, Waitlisted: Williams, Accepted: Hamilton, Bard, UMass Amherst, UVermont, Rutgers (Business, Engineering, Arts and Sciences), Ursinus

[/ul]General Comments: I am still in shock that I made it. Amherst was my dream school, and after being deferred I thought I had no shot. Applying to college is way too stressful.

Decision: Accepted

[/ul]Etc.[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: No clue, but I put down chemistry
[] State (if domestic applicant): Washington
[] School Type: Public, nothing special
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Female
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): LOL NO. It’s sad.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Stats
[] Weaknesses: My run-of-the-mill extracurriculars. They’re not super interesting and I have pretty much no leadership. I’m also Chinese, which I know helps me pretty much not-at-all.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m actually REALLY surprised. I expected to get rejected. I’m thinking the stats only helped me and the lack of leadership only hurt me, and I ended up getting waitlisted.
[] Where else you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Carleton, Grinnell, Mount Holyoke (21st Century Scholar), UWashington (Honors), Willamette
Waitlisted: Rice, Vassar, Tufts
Rejected: Pomona, Brown [/ul]

[ color=green]Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): N/A
[] ACT: 34

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): My school doesn’t rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5), none after freshman year because I transferred to a school that doesn’t do APs.
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: not gonna list all 12 classes (all considered the highest level of difficulty), includes Russian and BC calc
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Creative writing club (co-president), GSA, Amnesty International
[] Job/Work Experience: a summer internship at my state senator’s office
[] Volunteer/Community service: Over 600 hours since the start of sophomore year. I teach science classes to local elementary school students, work as a tutor in my school’s writing center, help run my school’s Ethics program, and am a wing guide (kinda like a junior RA in my dorm)
[] Summer Activities: Community service (specifically the teaching science stuff)
[] Essays: I was really proud of these. My commonapp essay is about how I compulsively correct people’s grammar and my Amherst essay is about my community service and how it’s important to me after escaping my old public school system.
[] Teacher Recommendations: Pretty good, I think? Both teachers knew me pretty well.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably very generic.
[] Additional Rec: The woman who oversees most of my community service and mentored me in a research project last year. She knows me really well and it was probably very good.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): IL
[] School Type: small, highly competitive public residential school with a math and science focus
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: Lower middle class? Low enough that I qualified for the diversity open house and have been getting nearly full rides in need-based aid from other schools.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My essays, maybe my recs, the fact that I take Russian (I’ve heard that that’s appealing because of Amherst’s Russian program), my school
[] Weaknesses: My GPA, my ACT science score (30)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Basically see "strengths.’ Not that I’m not shocked.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Also accepted at Wesleyan, Vassar, Oberlin, Carleton, Macalester, Scripps, and St. Olaf. Waitlisted at Haverford and rejected at Pomona.

[/ul]General Comments: I basically went into shock when I got the email. Totally shocked and waiting eagerly for financial aid.

[] Volunteer/Community service: 1000+ hours of Community Service

[] Teacher Recommendation: I didn’t get to read, but I think one was very good and one so so.
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent. She loves me.
[] Additional Rec: None

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Had the scores and very very involved- I think they liked the research I sent them!
[] Weaknesses: Good scores- but so did everyone haha! Also- senior grades not quite as good as junior year
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I decided to make my application to every college- especially Amherst- somewhat centered on my heritage and my recent reconnection with my roots. I think it was kind of risky, especially with so many Asian applicants now, but I guess it just goes to show that if you really love something and you’re really proud of it- it will pay off! Just believe in your strengths!
