^ I’m super glad I found this thread - it’s giving me a moderate form of sanity :-p

For some reason I can’t bring myself to call either the classics or Dan Brown-ish material my favorite. The former is just so…dislocated in time and culture, I guess you could say. And the latter, while intensely enjoyable, cannot be elevated to the status of a ‘true’ (whatever that means) work of literature imo.

Anyway, it’s interesting that you should mention Dan Brown. He attended Amherst in his time.

I wouldn’t say classics are dislocated in time and culture. The reason they’re classics is because the stuff that’s in them appeal and touch and in some cases hold true even now. I kind of have a thing for Russian classics. Lines from some of them make me shiver at how much they apply to me.

kiterunner, I like 21, sort of. fishface, I LOVE Fight Club! Both book and movie. Classicskid, I love Lord of The Flies too - I always wondered what would’ve happened if Jack hadn’t been there though. Oh, and I love HP with an undying passion, haha. Oh, and kiterunner, I wish I’d ED’d too - damn being both FA-needing and lazy!

And also, pasta FTW.

And YEAH, Dan Brown went to Amherst - I make a point of reading his books, even though they’re getting predictable, just for that.

Haha. Interesting. It never crossed me that Dan Brown went to Amherst. Yet another reason to love it, perchance? Haha.

& kiterunner;

Definitely a little step towards sanity. :)

Or maybe another reason to love Dan Brown. :p

I have yet to read The Lost Symbol. :(

I bought it a month or so ago but haven’t gotten around to cracking it open yet. Maybe now that I’m on break I’ll find a chance.

I’ll read it once I get this whole application season past me. I’m left with a few random documents to mail off, a peer rec to write for a friend, and other miscellaneous stuff like that.

Srrinath, are you applying to Williams?

I’m applying to Williams. Don’t stone me, lol. You do what you must when you’re a paranoid international needing FA.

I’m applying to Williams too. And in any case, both me and Quasi have 17-strong lists; the US doesn’t have that many good schools.

But just to be sure, if I get into both, I’d pick Amherst in an instant.

^That. In case it wasn’t obvious enough already.

@ClassicsKids: Once you get around to it, you might wish to prepare for a bit of disappointment. I found that it didn’t live up to the hype.

Amherst RD 2014!

I hate coming back from a family-infested holiday knowing I missed a lot. In any case, I love Dan Brown, Fight Club (book and movie, of course) and Pasta, provided that the sauce does not contain any slight bit of egg.

I’m applying to Williams, too! The thought of being a purple cow, though, is not as appealing as being Lord Jeff. Just throwing that out there. =]

“provided that the sauce does not contain any slight bit of egg.”
Aww, but carbonara’s the best. :p

So what does everybody love to do?

Haha. I only asked because you mentioned a peer rec - and I instantly thought of Williams.

I’m applying there too. However, I agree with Drama - I’d rather be a Lord Jeff.
:)

Oh, so you & Quasi are both internationals? I know a German guy who goes to Williams and he loves it (he’s an international student). However, I don’t think I could even possibly consider going to Williams over Amherst - they both hate each other.

Ohhhh Amhersttttt!!

Yeah, we’re both Indian (although srrinath lives in Singapore).

The best sauce to die to, yes. =P

Hahaha, I’m just imagining what would happen to us if some wound up going to Williams, and others Amherst. We’d go from being friendly, fellow applicants/acceptees to, well, enemies. Lovely thought.

So, is it a problem that I haven’t even started rewriting my Amherst essay yet? And still have 6 more essays to go? Just a thought.

^nah, its all good, pretty much where I am too lol
