If you're applying to transfer to Amherst for Fall 13' then feel free to submit your credentials, get chanced, or anything else for that matter because we're all in this together.

I’ll start.

I’m a non-traditional 25 year old student who is about to begin my fourth semester at a community college. To be honest, Amherst is a shot-in-the-dark, the cream of the crop for liberal art colleges, but here are my credentials:

GPA: 3.95
Founder and President of the Geology Club (going to major is Geology)
Details and Accomplishments -
All Natural Science Instructors allowed students to join the Geology Club on field trips to Geological parks for 5 extra credit points on exams. I supplied information about the parks history, pointed out where glacier deformations impacted the land, and went over the rock and mineral content throughout the park. Did an assembly in an elementry school to teach them about the rock cycle. Our club members each week would look into the broad field of careers that Geology has to offer. We also watched cheesy Geological related movies like Volcano and Deep Impact.

Vice President of Service for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
Details and Accomplishments -
Honors In Action Project - planted herbs with a daycare to show them where food grows. After a month they came to our schools with their parents and we showed them how to cook meals using the herbs they grew.
C4 - Motivated students to complete college by making them take a pledge and sign a banner. We also had a photobooth where students can wear a cap and gown holding the year they graduate up to motivate them to complete college.
Five Star Chapter

Officer in Environmental Action Society
Details and Accomplishments - Revamped a recycling programs for our school. Cleaned up parks within the city.

Peer-tutor in the writing lab at my community college.
Details - Helped student develop tools to write college-level essays.

Some Community Service due to involvement in clubs < 30 hours

Worked Part-Time at Whole Foods Market during all semesters while attending college.

I feel like I sent very strong essays (doesn’t everybody?) and had my past composition teacher, writing lab advisor, and my Phi Theta Kappa advisors look at them. I chose the fifth quote in the second essay portion in case you were wondering.

What I lack most is strong math courses, meaning I’ll only be taking up to pre-calc when I transfer out. My strengths are in the sciences of Chemistry 1,2, Geology, and Physics 1.

I feel like I meet the credentials pretty well, however so do another 500 people that are applying…

I’m not getting my hopes up, but Amherst is my number one choice.

3.9+, T20 school, #1 ranked in my current major, perfect or near perfect (+/- 1 wrong) scores on all standardized tests; strong extracurriculars with depth, time commitment, and breadth; internship offer in a bulge bracket ibank’s front office this summer. Majoring math/econ with an additional focus in south asian history/languages. Reasons for transferring cannot be any better - no soft reasons, almost entirely reasons why it is literally impossible to satisfy my academic goals (read: major and career goals) at my current University.

Looking forward to the decision, but focused on my current University. Good luck.

Firefly, What t20 school are you from? Also, how old are you? How does your school rank students in a particular major?

Class: 2015

Applying from: Lafayette College

Major: Molecular Biology and Biochemistry BS

Ranks: 3/114 (private school)

Lafayette GPA: 3.96 (increasing (3.66, 3.95, 4.0, 4.0), with 23 credit hours/semester)

NYU GPA (visiting student): 4.0

Honors/Awards/positions:
McKelvy Scholar (20/2400 students selected to be in honors program)
EXCEL Scholar (honors research program)
Biology Dept. Representative, HHMI Science Horizons Initiative
Campus Lead, Students for Barack Obama Campaign
Admissions ambassador (college and HS)

I’ve never understood why people qualify their recommendations as “glowing” or “stellar” or whatever. Same with essays…

Anyway, here’s what I applied with.

HS GPA: 4.3 weighted
SAT: 2150
(Applying for admission as a sophomore)
College: George Washington University
College GPA: 3.95 1st semester, 4.0 on midterm report (5 classes both semesters)
Major: (at GW) International Affairs
Everything else is qualitative, so there’s no point in listing it…

HS GPA: failed almost all classes, so it’s somethere between 2.0-2.3
Community College: 3.900 (21 credits in progress)

Rec: Decent
Essay: Decent

I am a very poor candidate and i don’t get my hopes up but it would just be a moment of dream if i get in.
hope you guys get in

collegefrenzy, i mean that it is ranked #1 in its department (college of business). I go to Notre Dame; MCOB is ranked the #1 Business School. Sorry if it wasn’t clear, I was on my phone and was a bit succinct. I’m the youngest freshman I know at my school.

Damn, I got into Cornell CAS as an econ and math major about two weeks ago and amherst does not release their decision until mid-may. I have to let Cornell know within 30 days and I’m quite screwed. What do you guys think your chances are?

I emailed Amherst and they responded that we should hear the first week in May.

^ Nice. That’s 3 colleges I’ll hear from in a 1-week time span.

Just to weigh in, I applied to Amherst as a spring transfer a few months back. I got waitlisted; I’m at Middlebury now. They admitted 2 transfers this semester (they noted it in the rejection letter my friend received as she, too, applied to Amherst as a transfer), but they will more than likely have more transfer spots/beds this fall. My observation is that Amherst puts A LOT of weight on the essays, so if your scores and hs grades are low (like mine were) you have a fighting chance! Hope this helps.

Just got in to Cornell but the financial aid was pitiful. Not worth going from mendoza to Cornell for an extra 100K in loans over 4 years just to study indian history with the same job prospects haha. So Amherst is looking like it’ll give us decisions late next week.

I’m not quite sure whether “first week of May” means this week or next, but if it means this week, we should know by Friday.

I think it means the week beginning Wednesday May 1 and ending Tuesday May 7… but I guess it could be as late as the 10th.

I just checked and it still says “The designated date to view your letter has not yet arrived. Please check back later.”

I’m pretty sure they email our decision letters, anyway, and don’t go through their portal.

Does anyone know for sure how we are notified? (As in email, ACData, mailed letter)

Well my guess is we might get the email says “your decision letter is now available on the portal” something…haha

Amherst is another lottery ticket. Transfer admissions appear to be twice as competitive as freshman admissions at Harvard.

I see there’s some confusion about notification. Last year, I received an email stating that my decision was available on AC Data. I logged in, and there was my letter.
