Post anything you feel will help others do well on the exam (IE: supplies, study guides, when you are studying etc...). I am taking this class in school so people like me can help out self studiers (if there are any lol). Also I did some extensive research into books and prep books. My teacher told me to get the Zumdahl Textbook (which is phenomenal, had it for Honors Chem last year, very challenging and it is great for the AP level), the Study Guide, and the Student Solutions guide, (I don't really know the difference between those last 2 books, and we'll see how it goes in prepping for the exam). But I have found the best prep books, which will almost definitely help you to a 5. I think PR (almost everyone agrees that PR is the top book for AP Chem), Peterson's (a little less known but HIGHLY recommended to me), 5 steps to a 5 500 Questions (500 multiple choice questions, great practice, I would think almost all the MC questions on the exam would be covered in that), and Barron's Flashcards (once again, more practice). I feel that the combo between the 5 steps to 5 questions and the Barron's questions would be very beneficial, because if you could answer most of those questions, you're set. Anyway, I know the exam isn't until May, but I just wanted to start this early to go along with my class. Hope this thread helps everyone get a 5 :)

I’m from last year but can offer some insight. For a textbook, I would recommend Chemistry: The Central Science by Brown. I used it to study and it was really comprehensive and clear.

I also used Barron’s AP Chemistry and while the material presented in it was more difficult than that on the actual exam, I felt super prepared after having gone through the book and several practice exams.

Oh, and I used these books as self study tools. I had two years of regular chemistry experience (my school didn’t offer AP) and I had been away from it for a year before taking the AP exam. I credit my 5 to these two texts.

It seems like you have almost the exact same AP schedule that I do this year; I am taking Human, Spanish Lang, and Chem too I forsee this one to be the hardest out of the four I am taking. The only prior Chemistry that I have had has been an online course, so I’m curious to see how this year works out for me! What Summer homework did your teacher give to prepare you guys? I’m curious to se where I stand in all of this.

@BBenitez16 maybe we could help each other out then I think Spanish Lang will be the hardest, but anyway I was given the Ultimate Chemical Equations Handbook (which actually seems to be a good book), and I have to write down all vocab, do all the exercises, and memorize the solubility table.

I’m taking it. I didn’t get any summer work though. I’m good at science so I’m not expecting it to be too bad.

I believe AP Chemistry will be the hardest class I take this year, though I have the same teacher from last year and he was good.

I had my first class of AP Chemistry today! Test on the first three chapters this Wednesday. My teacher warned us it would be really hard the whole year. Sigh.

Anyone have any study tips?

Thanks for starting this. I wasn’t planning on taking this class but I couldn’t take ap bio because of conflicts. My teacher is really bad and I am pretty nervous about this class. If anyone could recommend anymore review books that would be great. What are some that you can use to go along with the class, (not just review at the end)?
Thanks!

the first few days of chem are, sadly, going to be the easiest until after the AP test. Sigfigs are mostly review from hnrschem/phys if you’ve taken them, and are simple once you get it.

I’m also taking AP Chemistry this year and I think it will be my most difficult class. I’m up for the challenge, though. Any class should be possible to do well in if you put in the effort, right?

Yeah, AP Chemistry will be one of the hardest classes I’m taking. The teacher at my school is really picky and strict about everything. I’m definitely not slacking this year.

Check above for the review books, and I won’t be slacking either. I finished with a 91 average in Honors Chem, so it’s not like it was a cake walk last year.

I’m taking Ap chem but this is the first year the teacher is teaching it so I’m a little nervous. In previous years she has taught physical science (for kids who can’t handle chemistry but need the requirement) and regular chemistry. So I know she will either be really easy because she is used to teaching easier classes or really hard because she now has students who can handle a harder workload.

My friends and I loved the Barrons AP chemistry book. It has i believe 3 practice tests and many practice questions on the back. However, it may be confusing for a first time learner so hiring a tutor will surely help. Just remember how you answered each question in the book.

We need to get this thread back up and running lol. AP Chemistry this year is so hard, I have a 81% in the class right now, and we have an exam tomorrow! I got a C on my first test, and I cried twice in that class already lol.

We aren’t really covering much in my AP Chem class. I’m trying to hunt down a copy of the 5 Steps to a 5. I’ve used those for psychology and physics, so I’m hoping it might help with chemistry too.

My AP Chem teacher is… wait for it… PREGNANT. She will be gone from Feb-April (most likely). Can you talk about great timing?

How far is everyone in their classes? I think she is moving extremely fast because of this baby. We just finished up the gas laws (ideal gas law, partial pressures).

We finished up with the ideal gas laws last year, but at my school, AP Chemistry is meant to be more of a Chem II class. We just finished kinematics, but I really didn’t understand most of it since we’re moving a lot faster than last year.

This needs to be on the first page xP

My class just finished up with thermodynamics. WOOT!

@nerdlyfe I have the exact same problem. My teacher is pregnant and will be gone in April.
