Official AP Chemistry Thread (2014-2015)

use the course description and if you can get a hold of one, the practice test from last year. Those will be worth 10x as much as any review book.

Sorry if someone already asked on this thread, but what is everyone using to prepare for the AP exam?

I looked through Barron’s, and some of it was inaccurate…

@glasshours what was inaccurate? I got it but havent opened it yet

i’m taking an honors chem course cos my school doesn’t offer an ap chem course… do you think if i use the Princeton review book in conjunction w/ what ever we do in class i should be ok?

@sonpat Not sure about your honors class, but in the honors class I took, what took months to learn something was introduced in like 2 weeks (including going in more depth) and on top that 90% of the things we learn in AP is new stuff we’ve didn’t touch in honors. So if you’re deciding now you want to selfstudy for it, I’d advise against it.

But who knows, you honors class maybe more inline with the AP curriculum, so go see what you have to learn first before you decide to do it

@Zeppelin7‌ humm yea i see your point. I think we’re moving pretty quickly though we’re almost done with gas laws and stuff and we’re more than 12 done with the book. idk i shall try! thanks

@sonpat‌ In AP Chem we are in aqueous equilibrium right now and we did gas law stuff a long time ago. Are you using a regular Chemistry book or an advanced one for your class. What’s the book called? If your honors chemistry class is anything like my regular class last year, you’d have to study A LOT (half a year’s material) to get to the level of AP Chem. But it might be different at your school.

@dsi411‌ wait shit really? dang… i really hate my school right now cos they offer like no ap’s… they only have two …

@sonpat‌ If your school doesn’t offer many APs then you’re not obligated to take many. Colleges will understand that your school didn’t offer you many opportunities. Unless you just want to take the AP test for fun or college credit. Then I guess you can try it, but it’ll be really hard to do.

If any of you guys are using Zumdahl

I have done Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, first part of 9, first part of 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18

Do I have to do chapter 11 for the new AP Chem test or is that completely out of the test

Also do I need to study Organic Chemistry and Nuclear Chem (Chapter 19)

What about Chapter 16?

Hello guys. I’m a sophomore taking AP Chem currently without any previous chemistry course. Right now I’m at thermodynamics and it’s alright (I’ve already covered kinetics/equilibrium, gas laws, stoichiometry, etc). However our teacher is terrible and we don’t learn anything in class to be honest. I’ve been mostly studying myself or with friends, which is somewhat working. Because our first AP teacher left in October we didn’t get a solid foundation in certain topics like bonding and atomic structure (Lewis structures, resonance, hybridization, etc) among other things. I’m trying to catch up now but it’s really hard for me to understand polar/non-polar molecules and bonds as well as molecular geometry (VSEPR). What should I do to at least get a 3? I’ve been doing a bunch of practice tests and some released ones from like 2008/2013 as well as the 2015 official practice one from the College Board. My multiple choice % is improving but FRQ’s are a little weak in my opinion. Sorry for the random organization of the topics. I’d really appreciate any help.

@QasimHassan123‌ i’m in the same situation as you! does anyone have any good reference books they are using or any practice tests they have found?

Maybe just read zumdahl for reference

Does anyone have the official practice test from last year? Thanks in advance!

I have the 2014 free response questions, but according to my teacher, we’re not allowed to distribute them because they’re only to be used in the classroom.

dang… that sucks for people who are self studying :frowning: whyyy

I have a course which teaches all the bonding and VSEPR stuff you need to know for the AP. It’s available at http://chemin10.com It’s not free, but if you opt-in and send me an email (just reply to any of my emails) that you’re from College Confidential, I’ll send you a discount code. Good luck on the AP exam!

anyone know if Princeton review is any good for ap chem?

@booknerd98‌ I have it with me but I haven’t looked through it yet. It looks good to me but I’m not very picky when it comes to prep books.

@dsi411‌ alrighty i was gonna read through PR and then hit up B&N to look at Barrons during Spring Break
