***Official AP Language 2013-2014 Discussion***

Look up “AP English language practice test” and a few tests should come up. I also use this website: http://www.learnerator.com/ap-english-language</a> There’s some review books out there with three or four practice tests in them (CliffNotes and Princeton).

is anyone a bit worried for this ap exam? frankly i’m really relaxed for apush, but my teacher for ap language is really hands off and although we do prep, the multiple choice section seems a bit daunting.

Yeah, does anybody have any tips about prepping for the MC section? Maybe doing SAT questions?

@jelly765 so my teacher practices 10 questions timed from an old test each friday and i noticed my accuracy improve slowly but surely. although when we had a practice exam i did poorly and ran out of time. practice a few questions daily! (i would say weekly but it’s a bit too far in to stay lax at this point). but yes, more tips and resources would be appreciated!

I also do a couple practice problems a day. Since January I’ve been keeping a “literary terms” flashcard notebook. Every day I define a literary term from this list http://teachers.sduhsd.net/ppennock/ap%20resource%20packet.pdf</a>. A couple days after I learn a new term, I review it and look up examples so I understand it in context. As I do more practice sections, it reinforces the terms that I learned. Honestly the only other way to prep is write write write! Even if you just practice planning out essays and timing yourself, it’s a good way to get your mind geared toward AP prompts. Knowing higher level vocab helps, too, so for that you can either memorize words or read higher level books

I actually just took a practice one after school for my English class. I got 50 out of the 55 multiple choice questions right, and I’m still awaiting the essay results. I feel like I did absolute crap on my essays because of my poor time management skills. However, I did that calculations, and I just need 11 points in total for my essays to score a 5. So if I get 4’s on all of them, I’ll be fine. I’m extremely surprised by how easy this test seems now. I think I will just take two more practice ones before May.

How accurate are the CliffNotes tests? I took one and got… Around 55-ish, but the ones I took in-class got me around the 70-80 range consistently. Perhaps it’s because I’m not in-class and “pressured” enough?

Is anyone using Barron’s for this? If so, how useful is it?

I use Cliff’s and it’s pretty helpful. My multiple choice is still hovering around the 35 out of 55 range though, and I want to get it to at least a 40. I might just end up guessing on the questions that feature I, II, III aspects because I run out of time when I time myself.

How is the difficulty of the Barron’s tests?

Also, can anyone share some tips on writing each of the 3 essays? All of them back to back in 2 hours seems extremely straining.

If I consistently score 70-80% on multiple choice and 7-8 on each essay, am I set for a 5?

@Awflapjackz, The cutoff for a 5 is usually around a 111 raw score…A 7 on all 3 essays, with a 36/52 (69%) on the multiple choice is a 111. So, essentially, yes, you should be fine…

[A 75% multiple choice score, with a 7 on two essays, and an 8 on the other is a 118 raw score]

<a href=“AP English Language Test Score Calculator - AP Pass”>http://appass.com/calculators/englishlanguage</a></p>

How can I make sure I get a 7 on each of the essays? Synthesis, passage analysis, and argument essay?

Can somebody explain the 15 minute reading time for the essay section and how that works? Thank you!

There’s a 15 min reading period?? Can we use that for all 3 essays or just the synthesis?

Yes. You have access to all three essay prompts and can annotate and write notes but cannot write anything to be scored until after the 15 minutes.
@jchen97‌ Just make sure the essay is coherent, organized, insightful, and sounds coherent. In other words, use lots of esoteric words, but try not to sound obsequious.

I think I have a false sense of security right now. I get 7s on almost all my essays (got an 8 once) and I honestly think it’s just my teacher grading too leniently. The example essays on the collegeboard website that scored a 7 or 8 are so much better than mine!

@elf4EVA‌ @xs1016‌ how is everyone feeling about the exam this friday? [-X

I have no idea if my teacher is an easy grader or something, but we recently wrote each type of essay, and I scored a 9, 9, and an 8.

Since I usually get around 11-15 wrong on multiple choice, I’m actually more excited than nervous for this exam. I just want to get it done. Ugh, my hand will hurt so badly after. :b

I haven’t written a legitimate essay this entire year because our class was a joke, pretty much. The extent of our essay grading was submitting through Turnitin and checking for plagiarism.

Is there anyone willing to look over a practice essay of mine? I’m completely lost and I’d be eternally grateful :(
