***Official AP Language and Composition 2012-2013 Thread***

For m/c, anybody said that “then” was used to so the result or outcome or whatever?

@ Apalapa, discussing the cave allegory sounds like it could be an interesting addition to the your essay since it contrasts the material world with the intangible world of Ideas, the latter possessing true Reality while the former are mere shadows or representations. However, it was Plato not Socrates who developed this theory! Plato wrote his philosophy in dialogues and often made the character Socrates the mouthpiece for his ideas. This kind of error would not likely detract from your grade, but it could certainly influence your credibility. Hopefully you got it right on the test!

Do the essay graders take points off for spelling errors?

No they will not penalize you that much for spelling errors, they know that you have around 40 minutes to finish an essay that’s supposed to completely answer the question and have supporting evidence

For the “then” question I said it emphasizes a step Cuz she was saying have women prove themselves THEN have them decide

My teacher said that they treat the essays as if they were a rough draft of a paper since you only have 40 minutes to write it. As a result they don’t mind a couple spelling or grammatical errors as long as they are not too frequent.

For analysis could “Synthetic Nature” be considered an oxymoron because I said it was. I thought in that essay it was very easy to determine all the rhetorical devices compared to other practices I’ve done.

@JD That’s definitely an oxymoron. I agree, I thought the rhetorical device passage was really easy to read and had several easily identifiable rhetorical devices. Overall, really, all the passages were easier than usual. One question - on the MC, in the passage about art, was the Gauthier guy being ironic with his statements or was he actually being disparaging? I couldn’t tell for sure.

@theme I thought he was actually being disparaging because remember he was a supporter of that movement so he hated people who would say such things because it countered the ideals of the purpose of it.

I loved my rhetorical analysis. I went chronologically and I felt that was better and I wrote more naturally. I suspected each paragraph independently. But my essay was only 3 paragraphs though. The 2 bodies were huge though. But huge for a reason. Do you guys wanna know some things I mentioned?

The “then” question anybody???

I answered it the same way.

I thought MC questions were fairly easy, but I had trouble writing the synthesis essay.
I hope i can score 7 for all the essays.

I kinda bombed the analysis. I had one big body paragraph that just listed a bunch of rhetorical techniques with examples. I did relate it back to how it strengthened his argument though. How bad is it if I made my organization a mess?

Did anyone put opposing fates of humans and fishes as one of the answer choices??

I forgot to number the last page of my Q3 essay. I went in order for the essays and labeled all the pages except the last one… will they still grade it?

They should be able to grade it… How much of your essay was in that last page?

The then question was emphasizing the step, and the opposing fates is what I put. I really hope he was being disparaging and not ironic. There were two questions about his statements and I didn’t like either of them.

I thought the test went fairly well!
Granted, my teacher never told us about the synthesis or argumentative essay until this past week, but I managed to finish both the multiple choice and essays with a good ten minutes to spare.
I have no clue how, but the multiple choice felt even easier than ACT reading multiple choice. (I really hope I don’t jinx myself as I say this…)
As for the passages, my synthesis was to the point, my rhetorical analysis offered some intelligent thought, and my argumentative was honestly the most I could conjure after writing two essays.
Hoping for a solid 7 on synthesis and rhetorical and a 6 on argumentative. 4 guaranteed but hoping for that 5.

hey lemon… what was the “then” question???

Half my essay was on the last page :/
