put what you guys are puttin on your appeals here, and share your ideas.

i have 2 main points im guna put in my appeals paper, please tell me what you guys think.

1) the semester i did worst in was the only semester i decided to join football. i practiced from after school until 7 PM, and i was in a rigorous schedule for school. i got three C's on the report card that i decided to join football in.

2) my dad works 6 out of 7 days in L.A., and he is only physically present at my home on sundays. i want to tell UCI how i have a stay at home mother and a sister in high school and a brother in elementary school, and how i wish to be close to home to support my family and help out. i want to put how i need to act as the father with my dad being absent most of the time.

*for those of you out there wanting to show UCI how great your senior year grades are... sorry but it says specifically that good senior grades have no effect.

Senior grades do count. Why do you think they are asking for your transcripts along with an appeal letter anyway?

It says that senior grades aren’t a BASIS for appealing. This means that you cannot appeal just because you have good senior grades.

But it also means that you need something in ADDITION to good senior grades. Senior grades basically cannot be a sole reason why you are appealing.

You can have a reason for appeal, but if your senior grades aren’t top notch, they won’t listen to your reason of appeal anyway.

For me, i messed up sophmore year in one semester. my weighted gpa for junior year was a 4.0, but i recieved 2 C’s the second semester of soph year, which i didnt really concentrate in school due to my time spent in sports and familly issues. . my overall uc gpa turned out to be 3.54. Sat: 2030. This sucks, because i got rejected from every uc except from Riverside.

Well I did not apply to UCI, but I’d like to comment on your appeal if that is alright.

For your first point, I do not think you should put alot of emphasis on this. Of all the people on this forum, I can understand where you are coming from. I did marching band during high school and our band program one of the best in the state/country. We practice all the time, including frequent all day saturday rehearsals. Getting 3 C’s because of this seems more like you were tired and got a little lazy then that you literally had no time. Were they AP classes? I do not know your stats or anything, but as you probably have read from the admitted/rejected post, you need a 3.8ish with 1900 sats about. It sounds already like you might be below that mark. It is doubtful that they will really care about you not having enough time to get B’s and A’s.

Point 2, I think this is a very strong point. You are clearly looking for the sympathetic admin to review your appeal. It will tell the admins that you dont want to go to UCI, you need to, because another UC is not an option. I like this angle. I hope it comes through for you, but as you know, appeals are rare so do not get your hopes up by any means.

Point 2 is a really good idea… i’m going to be talking about that too because my dad lives in taiwan, and my mom is here alone with me so therefore i have to stay closer to home to help out too, since my brother lives in san diego and everything.

should i also talk about how during my junior year, i had bascially ALL AP and Honors courses and it was really stressfull with the workload? and during last year my grandpa had a stroke as well so it kind of added to the stress i was going through?

Might as well appeal to irvine if im appealing to ucd as well. all i got is great grade improvement in senior year (as in almost a full point up gpa-wise), leadership roles, and several regional awards.
The only reason I can argue for the poor grades in 10th and 11th grade is because I did not even consider attending college in those years, which I’m probably not going to include since that sounds like something that would hurt more than help.

cali trumpet, thanks for your input!
as for my stats, i have a 3.6 weighted gpa and 2020 SAT.
got alot of clubs, and the ECs, etc.

and for my point number one about the football team… yes they were ap classes. i ended football at 7pm coming home to homework for ap euro, H chem, H spanish 3, H language arts, and H trig.

based on your advice cali trumpet, i think i will simply mention point number one, but have the majority of my appeal be based on point number two. thanks for the advice!

sorry, and kiego, you are right
i just read over their policy too fast, and it does say the word “basis”
so ya, it just means that they do not solely rely on senior grades for appeals.

thinks financial hardship for you to go to other UC if you live in Irvine.

thinks medical/mental/caring hardship…if you live in Irvine and have documented evidence. eg. A letter from your very sick grandmom who relies on your physical care and emotional support will do it.

Your stats are very good, and its too bad your applying this year. As you know the UC’s made more people sad this year because of all the rejections to qualified students.

I do not know if Irvine is all about hardships, but I do know UC’s in general weigh hardships over most anything. It is possible you were modest in your initial application about your problems, but now that you were rejected, it is your time to clue them in on all the issues you are faced with.

In general, Irvine will probably not want to hear about ‘all your clubs’ but your leadership involvement in one or two. If you were a secretary or something and did alot of work, that would be ideal.

Definitely mention the amount of football during these crucial years. Maybe even explain an average day as a football player for your school, but understand that you have 350 words. You gotta make them feel something special about you in the way that you care for your family as a father, and still get excellent grades and sat scores.

Whether or not this comes through or not, life will go on. Have you been accepted to any other UC’s or would you just go to a community college for two years? Best of luck!

what ever you do don’t be broad that’s for sure
like if you want to talk about being a father figure give them examples that might help
use ONE or TWO clubs/activities to show how active you were in the community
brevity won’t get you far
or at least that’s what i think

my gc said that the adcom recalculates your gpa when you send in your app to confirm i guess. can any1 confirm or deny? cause if they dont, then my UC gpa would rise about .9 of a pt so maybe thatll sway their decision as well as some other stuff. but she might be wrong cause she said that a summer school grade wont replace a d or a f during reg school, but i read on their site that it did

oy i forgot to mention that i’m a URM cambodian and that i was a private tutor who worked for only 12 hrs and raised a kids grade 2 full letters. grounds for an appeal?
