***Official Bates Class of 2016 Decisions page***

<p>I was hoping we could start a Class of 2016 Decisions Thread, since there hasn’t been an official one in a few years, I believe. The Bates College Forum doesn’t seem to be garnering much traffic lately, so hopefully this might change that. We might be able to aid future Bates applicants in their college decision making with a decisions thread. Just as a reminder this is strictly a decisions thread, so lets leave any “discussion” to the following thread: <a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/bates-college/1257766-official-bates-class-2016-results-page.html[/url]”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/bates-college/1257766-official-bates-class-2016-results-page.html</a></p>

<p>I hope this is ok with Mindy, the poster of the Official Bates Class of 2016 Results page. I would have just responded to your thread, but I was worried the thread wouldn’t get much decisions feedback. Well anyways, good luck to all!</p>

  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A (school didn’t grade… strange, I know)

  • AP (place score in parenthesis):Nope… schools that don’t grade don’t generally offer APs either…
  • IB (place score in parenthesis):yeah… no.
  • Senior Year Course Load: Calculus, Physics, English 12, French V, Studio Art, plus Human Geography independent study and student teacher for freshman social studies
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):nope.
    </code></pre>

<p>Subjective:</p>

<pre><code>* Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):Ski Racing, 7th grade-PG, hopefully skiing for Bates (as a walk-on), Violin study, studio art, intern at local news blog, peer mentor, volunteer with outdoor recreation groups and local flood relief after Irene… I know I filled out more, but I can’t remember.

  • Job/Work Experience: Summer work.
  • Volunteer/Community service:Trail crew, flood relief, assistant in fitness outreach program
  • Summer Activities:ski training, work…
  • Essays: i wrote about my decision to take a gap year, by contrasting the northeast and the northwest and what the differences meant to me.
  • Teacher Recommendation: good, i think!
  • Counselor Rec: also good.
  • Additional Rec:nope
  • Interview:nooope
    </code></pre>

<p>Other</p>

  • Ethnicity:Caucasian
  • Gender:Female
  • Income Bracket:lower middle class

    </code></pre>

<p>Reflection</p>

<pre><code>* Strengths:Scores, good writer

  • Weaknesses:lack of structured HS curriculum, no APs
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: probably the ACT score
  • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Williams ED, rejected at Colby and Bowdoin so far. Waiting on Midd, Dartmouth, and the final word from Williams, but I’m not holding my breath. If Colby rejected me, I don’t have a snowball’s chance in heck, as far as I can tell. Oh well, looks like Bates 2016 for me!
    </code></pre>

<p>General Comments:I applied as a HS senior and was flat out denied, with slightly lower scores and similar ECs/recs. I took a gap year against everyone’s advice, and did something sort of cool with it (moved across the country, focused on ski training). I absolutely studied my butt off for the standardized tests, and i think that made a big difference (I raised my ACT score from a 28 to a 34). In MY experience Bates is the sort of school that rewards persistence, so if you didn’t get the news you were hoping for it’s not the end of the world. If you were rejected, or you want to know about taking a gap year, you can PM me and i’ll tell you more about my experience.
Looking forward to meeting other future Bobcats!</p>

<p>Great job skiguurl21, I completely agree about the whole thing about Bates rewarding persistence. I’m sure that’s what got me in.</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted</p>

<p>Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): N/A
ACT: Didn’t submit
SAT II: N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): I believe it is 14/576
AP (place score in parenthesis):N/A
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Language and Rhetoric, AP Psychology, AP Chemistry, AP Economics, Honors Anatomy and Physiology Independent study, Honors Peer Tutoring, Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Medical Ethics Independent Study. [Block Scheduling]
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): IL State Scholar </p>

<p>Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I had plethora of sporadic and nonuniform activities but I believe my most important activity was Greek school- graduating sophomore year. Otherwise, I didn’t have any recognized leadership positions.
Job/Work Experience:Worked at a retail store during summer before senior year
Volunteer/Community service: Again, sporadic. I had a large volume of hours working with my mom at the clinic she works at.
Summer Activities: Did a medical conference at Northwestern University over the summer before my senior year. Received a Scholarship to attend.</p>

<p>Essays: Best pieces I’ve ever written. My supplemental essay really put into perspective how much I wanted to attend (for me). I think the epitome of a good essay is something that really reflects who you are.
Teacher Recommendation: Great, got one from my AP Biology teacher and AP Language teacher.
Counselor Rec: Never saw it, but I am guessing it was generic.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Had an alumni interview. I thought it went okay. It was really enlightening for me regarding my desire to attend.</p>

<p>State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
School Type: Suburban, Public.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 50-100K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None</p>

<p>Strengths: Essays, Rec’s
Weaknesses: ACT scores, though I didn’t submit them! Lack of uniform activities and leadership positions
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t think I can pinpoint one thing that would have “sealed the deal.” I do, however, believe that the idea of looking at the applicant holistically is true.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Loyola University Chicago, University of Minnesota. Waitlisted at Kenyon College, University of Wisconsin Madison and University of Chicago- I think it was because of my unpromising ACT…</p>

<p>General Comments: I believe that by the end of the application process, I had a pretty accurate idea of which school I wanted to go to. They gave me a gracious amount of FA ( A little below 50k). I hope everyone is happy with the result of this years college application process!</p>

Country (if international applicant): India
School Type: Transfer student from a University in Alabama
Ethnicity: East Indian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Lower-middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): NONE</p>

<p>Reflection
Strengths: I take initiative and am very clear about what I want to do. I made sure in my essays that they knew that I am an independent thinker.
Weaknesses: I got a C in Calculus (which comes very naturally to me) because I was overconfident during my finals and went in late for the test to find a decently difficult test. So my GPA in college was affected. Other than that, I have 3 yrs of gap between my previous enrollment in an academic institution and Fall 2012 during which time I did a lot of self-teaching and web entrepreneurship work.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Hoping to get the good news about acceptance.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted at the College of Wooster in OH and also Lake Forest College in IL but I didn’t like their FA packages. Bates has always been my dream. But I got an email from a person in the Adcom of Hampshire College saying that my application was a delight to read
General Comments: I belong to an group of candidature that is not very favorable - International transfers. To add to that I need a large amount of financial assistance. So I’m a little apprehensive even while having all the positive attributes that I do. I hope I get lucky.</p>

<p>Has anyone heard from Bates since May 1… ? Anyone offered off of the wait list?</p>
