[] Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied: I wasn’t impressive enough.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments: Honestly, I’m shocked. I know at least four classmates with comparable stats who were accepted, and I get rejected. I think I was the sacrificial lamb for the high-stat, yet unimpressive, excuse for a rejection that year for my high school in Cal’s admissions office. I’m with ya, @OutOfBoundsError, I’m baffled and pissed off. Just remember, selective college admissions does NOT favor the late-bloomers. I am one, and I got screwed over. If I had a time machine, I would’ve told my freshman self to bust out of my introverted shell and start getting involved in school and the community. I probably would’ve been happier as well as more successful when college admissions season rolls around. But I only have the future to look forward to. sigh

  • [li] Extracurriculars:[/li]- [9, 10, 11, 12] **JROTC/b: 222 Hours
My school’s JROTC program has been around since 1902, and I am the first to hold the Brigade S-2 position. I am commissioned to the second-to-the-highest rank in a brigade of 300+ cadets. This makes me 5th in command. I have also revamped and redesign the school’s old newsletter (last published in 1991) under this new position.
    - [10, 11, 12] Spanish Club: 45 Hours
Our Spanish Club involves many activities that include an annual trip down to St. Augustine, salsa dancing lessons, a traveling art show, planning International Day, and helping out an orphanage down in Mexico.
    - [11, 12] **Benedictine Knights of the Leo Club/b: 112 Hours
I co-founded this club along with a friend in hopes of finding community service opportunities for our friends to do, and to have fun doing them together. Our school requires 70 hours of community service to graduate.
    - [11, 12] **Yearbook “Sabre” Staff/b: 116 Hours
I have completely redesign the entire yearbook this year by myself versus reusing all of the templates from my predecessors.
    - [12] **Math Team/b: 31 Hours
Reviving an old, happy, middle school memory, I started a Math Team.
    [li] Job/Work Experience: N/A[/li][li] Volunteer/Community service:[/li]- [10, 11, 12] National Honor Society: 96 Hours
I developed a tutoring program and work the blood drive.
    - [11, 12] STEM Club: 20 Hours
I founded this club and is also the Environmental Division Head. I established a recycling program for the school under this club.
    - [11] Lions’ Club International: 7 Hours
An annual event where my friends and I unload hundreds of Christmas trees, and help sell them to raise money to purchase eyeglasses for those in need of them.
    - [11] Tara Feis: 4 Hours
An annual Irish festival, in which I help by managing rides, cleanup after folks, and serving food. It’s completely ran by high school students.
[li] Summer Activities:[/li]- LeadAmerica Conference on Business Innovation at Stanford University
    - National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at the University of California-Berkeley
[li] Essays:[/li]- Personal Statement #1: I wrote about growing up in the back of nail salon that was located in a bad neighborhood, and how that caused my young, innocent to realize the evils of the world earlier than most children. I also mentioned being an Asian kid of immigrant parents, who speak broken English, growing up in the Deep South and on the East Coast. I played a lot on my identity as an Asian versus an Americanized Asian person.
    - Personal Statement #2: I wrote about taking care of my young brother while my parents work 24/7. I emphasized on playing the parent role and how I taught my brother various things that all kids learn from their parents ranging from riding a bike to being potty-trained. Also, I said that my younger brother has also become my own model, teaching me how to dream and to never completely grow up.

Reflection

  • [li] Strengths: GPA, Extracurriculars, Personal Statements[/li][li] Weaknesses: Test Scores, Community Service[/li][li] Why you think you were accepted?[/li]I think I was accepted because of my personal statements and GPA. My personal statements were just that, personal. In fact, I bawled my eyes out when I was writing my second one about my younger brother. I felt like I was relieving a huge weight on my shoulders, being able to be honest and to tell my life’s story. As far as my GPA goes, I think it being a perfect 4.0, compliments well with my class rigor when you consider that my school only offers 10 AP classes and 19 Honors classes. My extracurriculars are all over the place, but they do show a lot of innovation. Instead of seizing opportunities, I created opportunities for myself, as well as for others. I spent a lot of time trying my best to make a change at my school, and I believe that it’s another form of leadership in itself.

General Comments:
I honestly don’t know what to say. A lot of people had their doubts about me being accepted into Cal, and I did too. I’m so thrilled and happy, because I fell in love with this school when I stayed for 10 days during the summer for a program. It was inspiring and motivated me to start up things and make a change in school! I’m excited now to be able to return. But to those who have doubts, because you have a low test score, well… Anything can happen! Trust in yourself and write a darn good essay! Do things to make up for your weaknesses! And just be honest! And for those who might be wondering why I applied and got rejected from so many private universities, is because I applied under QuestBridge. My QuestBridge application and Common App essays were not as well done and written as my Personal Statements for the UCs. So as you can see, a good essay comes a long way. Good luck to next year’s applicant pool! FIAT LUX!

[] Strengths/Weaknesses/Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied:: My writing had strengths, and my SAT scores were decent although not great by Berkeley standards, so I was a little surprised (although I must say, I did not take my SATs seriously, they were the day after school got out and I didn’t know people actually study for them, I showed up at the last minute because I was already signed up and they were being administered near the closest Sonic). I’m relieved to be accepted and it seems like the next best place for me, as New York seems to have the perfect opportunities for my future but I can’t afford to go to the university I got into there, so Berkeley was my unlikely fallback before UCSD, but I didn’t even submit a recommendation when they gave me the option to, yet I still got in. I’m hoping I can go to the Bridges overnight program and consolidate my cautious hopes with more concrete observations/experiences at Berkeley.

General Comments Kept thinking I had a chance. I remember looking over my school’s Naviance graphs and thinking that my stats would get me in. I should have demonstrated some real interest in some activity. I’ll probably be headed to my state flagship (didn’t get accepted to anywhere else). Not sure how affordable Berkeley would have been… anyways, congrats to those who got in! @yangmaster Are you me? I feel like we’re in the same boat with similar stats… your description of a late-bloomer also fits me exactly—I really only started thinking about those elite colleges junior year…

The stupidest most annoying rude child was accepted from my school. He only had a 1700 and a 3.9 or some crap it just pissed me off bc he got a 1 in chem and a 3 in bio yet they accepted him to biochem I don’t get it… He had a lot of ecs but that shouldn’t matter if u don’t have the stats… There’s my angry rant

yay!!! after getting rejected from Cal Poly and UCLA I thought I had NO chance here. but I guess I’m gonna be a bear!

@mf18233 : what about his ACT? I’ve seen many average-minus-10% numbers that possibly can be explained with the holistic non-sense, so check out his EC/URM. Though I have to admit his UCB numbers are way too low for biochem acceptance. Maybe he’s trolling everyone.

Go bears! Why does it seem like half of all colleges have this animal as their mascot?

General Comments I’m extremely angry with Berkeley since I applied L&S and less qualified people have gotten in. Nevertheless I’ll do my best at UCLA (ugh I wish I could’ve gone to Haas)! I didn’t foresee getting so many waitlists/rejects from my top universities…and some of them are really weird.

Accepted – University of Minnesota, University of Washington, WUSTL, UCLA
Waitlisted – UChicago, NYU, Dartmouth
Rejected – Harvard, Columbia, Duke, Berkeley
Waiting on – Georgetown (probably another waitlist/rejection since I applied MSB)

@slamdunkz2496 - I feel you! I have very similar stats and was rejected from L&S as well. I wouldn’t feel quite as bad if I had been rejected from Engineering, but L&S seems to have standards that are quite a bit lower.

Having said that, I am very excited to go to UCLA next year, so apart from the ego blow of not getting accepted, I don’t feel too bad. I grew to love both Berkeley and UCLA this year, and I was going to have a very hard time choosing between them, so getting rejected from Berkeley actually made my decision a lot easier.

@mf18233 @DogeBoi I’m so mad he got in everyone knows him as the joke of the school. He can’t even write a decent essay. Once in AP WH a teacher asked him if English is his second language even because his essays are so bad. Last year in APUSH he thought the underground railroad was a legit underground railroad. His AP scores are as follows: APAH 1, APWH 2, AP BIO 3, APUSH 2, AP CHEM 1, AP ENG 3 , AP Psych 4. His UW is like a 3.2- 3.3 but has a decent weighted because of all the APS he takes and he literally spends all day studying and he still can’t produce good results. The thing that is so annoying is that he ALWAYS lies like he prob put he was on varsity tennis even though he has been on JV for the last four years because he sucks. He also lied about his Kaiser volunteer hours because he would get his parents to sign him in at 6 am because they work there and sign him out at night. Both of his essays were sob stories about being Mexican even though his parents are well enough and he has never had a single hardship in his life. I can’t believe he got in over people who truly deserve it. He’s prob going to flunk out by the end of the first semester guarantee.UGH. - _-

@punkeeo96 what is kaiser? i dont think we were talking about the same person because the person at my school is now going to cornell-_- guess my jealousy for his acceptance into my dream school blinded my eyes to seeing his true potential…
LESSON TO EVERYONE: dont disregard the kid who u think is dum i was obviously the dum one in this scenario as u can see in the above posts with my ignorant arrogance… glad someone I knew saw this and put me into my place
