**Official BHP Application Thread**

Very well. The interviewer was a fairly laid-back young alumnus, and it was good to have an opportunity to ask about the program and (professionally) plea my case.

I got accepted yesterday and my interview was January 30. I’m still having a hard time deciding between BHP and some other schools though (see UT BHP vs. MIT Sloan thread) so I don’t know what to do :frowning:
Is anyone going to Discover BHP?

Also, will I for sure get the OOS tuition waiver if I’m a NMF and when would we find out about money stuff? Also, is it pretty much impossible to get other merit scholarships?

"Applicants from Texas who are National Merit Finalists will receive $4,000 for the first year and $3,000 for their second, third and fourth years. Applicants from Texas who are National Merit Semifinalists, but do not advance to Finalist standing, will receive a one-time, $1,000 scholarship for the first year only.

Texas resident commended scholars are not recognized with a scholarship offer.

Out-of-state applicants who are National Merit Finalists will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a non-resident tuition exemption (NRTE) for a maximum of four years. The value of the NRTE is approximately $8,000 per year. Non-resident semi-finalists or commended scholars are not recognized with a scholarship offer."

That is the official line from Plan II’s website. I assume that it applies across the University.

Thanks for posting that!

RewindPlayback, that’s awesome! I’ve been emailing with my alumni; apparently he is the head of McCombs Alumni and works with branding on the internet, so hopefully I’ll get the chance to bring up my past work as a web developer and current job at HP :)

Just had my interview! It went very well!

My interviewer said it takes them a little less than a month to process and give a decision.

BHP time line. Son did interview 2/19 and got packet yesterday (3/12) saying he was in BHP saying he was in. Very happy! Question, he applied for Plan 2 also, mostly in case he didn’t get in to BHP, but no mention was made in the packet as to acceptance or rejection for it. Does that come separately?

I did my interview on the 19th and got my packet for BHP yestersday as well. Congratulations to your son.

As for Plan II, yes, that packet does come seperatly; it will be in a manilla big envelope (I got mine in early February).

See you (possibly) at Discover BHP. :-)

Hooray! I wanted this over everything!!

Thanks RewindPlayback congrats to you too. Stobizzle09, congrats to you too. Where else did you apply?

hey BHP people, anyone got anything on financial aid or scholarships yet?
cause all my Honors engineering friends did, and I was just curious.

I won’t be getting any financial aid… As for scholarships, no notification yet except that I didn’t get the terry one. I’m going here for sure, but the thing about great schools is that they know they don’t have to pay you to come there! :)

hey guys, i got in! my stats aren’t too great though so i was surprised that I got in only a week and one day after my interview! I’m definitely going, and I’m pretty pumped about it!

and scholarships, i’ve got nada on those or financial aid except that I am a finalist for the Terry foundation one and I have an interview April 1st for it… Are there any business related scholarships we can get? I haven’t heard of any

and… are yall going to Discover BHP? I’d have to skip a baseball game, but I will if it’s a good thing to go to

hey could whoever got in please post some stuff from their resumes like extra-curriculars, sat scores, gpa, rank etc.? thanks a lot

shakpng, my stats are on page 2 from a while back. I got in on the 12th.

I got in! Who else got in and is planning to attend BHP day on 28th?

I am! Do you think it’s worth it to go?

Did anyone end up going to Discover BHP? Did you learn anything important or have anything you want to share for those of us who couldn’t make it?

I really want to make another trip to Austin and visit campus while actual school is in session, but my april schedule is ridiculous as it is, and UT is looking less and less likely with the other colleges filling my mailbox :/

I went but missed the morning introductions because I had to be doing some interviews. I think it might have been a better opportunity to meet new students had I been there earlier on, but I just ended up hanging with a couple of other people who were interviewing as well.

As far as “dire” information, you didn’t really miss anything. There were a lot of parents that needed to have their egos stroked and reassured that there “babies” would be in good hands at a first rate school. Questions like, how much help will professors give? What if they can’t keep up? What about the grading system? What about the /new/ grading system? What about the rankings?

Answers:
We offer a ton of office hours, if your kid… I’m sorry, Young Adult will come for help, we are happy to explain especially for BHP students. Usually, BHP students are more worried about trying to skip ahead in content and I need to hold them to where they are.

If they can’t keep up, they can come to me and I will pair them with a student who is doing well to help them study before the next exam on the condition that they actually study prior to the visit. Not showing up to class is the usual reason students don’t and can’t keep up, even though notes are online. Class is necessary.

Most McCombs students in BHP maintain a 3.8 average. There is no bell curve and no test curving upwards.

With the new plus/minus grading system, it should not affect the students in McCombs BHP 3.8’s significantly even on an individual basis. It does make a 4.0 harder, though.

Being in the top 10 in everything has brought many recruiters here no matter the climate because when finance recruiting is down, accounting recruiting is up. McCombs is ranked highly in spite of it’s enormous size which it is ranked 87th and formerly 110th in. This is because on a class by class level BusinessWeek sees our value in the data. BusinessWeek is the more databased ranking system as opposed to the /perception/ of rankings found in U.S. News, which does have some merits. (I found that interest for him to say as US News ranks the program higher)

The mock classes were interesting. I took a junior level finance class, but watered down for the basics I think. The professor was nice and pretty adept at connecting the concepts to actual situations from her professional career (she’d been an investment banker a lot longer than a teacher) and personal situations in her home life.

It was good to hear from the panel of students about the importance of study abroad and job prospects after graduation. They were pretty knowledgeable and the opportunities available seemed wonderful. They emphasized the network that McCombs has in every study abroad area they offer and that’s at just about every business center city.

The tour of the honors dorm was nice the community was good, if the rooms small. And, as luck would have it were were there for a campus event where people were splashing colors all over each other to loud music (at the time Indian) to celebrate diversity. Everyone out there was so warm (as people, the whether was cool and windy). That was a great contrast to the business casual monolithic crowd that we had made up for ourselves to go on the tour. :-)

It was a great weekend for me, but I had other activities, mainly through the interview process that made it that way. These are the things that I saw at the Discover BHP.
