Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

Hi, new to CC but excited to get my first interview notification today from Wisconsin. A very nice letter saying that I'm on the "shortlist" of their applicants!

Applied: Harvard BBS, Berkeley MCB, MIT, UWashington MCB, Wisconsin Genetics, Duke GGP, NYU Biology

Interviews: Wisconsin (notified 12/12)

My Stats:
GPA: 3.8 at top 5 school
GRE: 740V(99%) 800Q(94%) 5.5AW(90%) 880Bio (97%)
Two years research experience, thesis in genetics lab, several other short-term projects
A couple posters, publication in preparation (3rd author)
One excellent LOR, two from professors who liked me in one class each

Top choices are Harvard and Berkeley. Anyone else hope to decide between those two?

Applied: Wisconsin, UPenn, Michigan, Illinois, Washington in St. Louis, UChicago, Northwestern
Interviews: UPenn (notified 12/12)

My Stats:
GPA: 3.9
GRE: 650V(93%) 800Q(94%) 5.5AW(90%) 680 Biochem (93%)
Three years research experience
Three LORs, one from Research PI.

What program was that for at Penn?

neurohopeful,
I applied to Princeton as well and eagerly waiting. It is their indeed their first year and I got an email (it was probably generic) from a professor saying how they were excited about their computational track.
I dont think you should worry about not having neuro background. I know people who came into graduate programs with a non-neuro background. The core classes in the first year are meant to bring everyone on the same page with neurobiology stuff. see you in seattle :)

@Neuro: It was for Immunology.

Yeah, I REALLY hope they let us know before the holiday, an interview at Princeton would rock. I got that email, too, but I don't think it was completely generic because it referenced some specific things from my LORs and essay. It seems like they are really trying to recruit people proactively because it is their first year (hopefully will be a good thing for us!). In any case, can't wait for Seattle!

Husband got emailed for an interview at University of Wisconsin- Madison. Two weekends were offered and he pick the 5th of Feb.

Microbiology PhD
Applied: UAB, UW-Madison, UW-Seattle, Yale, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, ASU, Virginia Tech.
Interview: UAB (Jan. 8th) & UW-Madison (Feb. 5th)

Hey guys I applied to a couple of PhD programs in Cell Biology at some top-tier schools (Stanford, UCSF, Harvard, UCSD, Rockefeller, etc.) and I'm getting a bit nervous since I haven't heard back from any of them. What do you think are my chances of getting into one of these type of schools given my stats?

My Stats:
GPA: 3.89 (BS - Biochem and Cell Bio) and 4.00 (MS - Biology) at UCSD
GRE: 670V (95%) 800Q (94%) 5.5AW (90%) 690 Biochem (95%)
Research Experience: Three years with a MS thesis in Cell/Molecular biology. No publications but currently preparing a paper (either second author or co-first author) and have data for 2 or 3 more papers in the near future (either first author or co-author). Hopefully my PI mentioned this in her LOR...
LORs: 3 very strong LORs, one from my PI (PhD at Stanford, post-doc at Harvard) and another from the academic coordinator of UCSD biology.

Don't worry- your stats look great. There are only a handful of schools who notify before the holidays. Most of the invites will start rolling in mid-January.

There's no way anyone should be getting nervous about not hearing back yet -- most schools don't start inviting for interviews until about the second week of January.

I got an interview at the University of Chicago Molecular Biosciences program on Friday Dec. 12. The interviews are the end of January. :)

CONGRATS, phanta! :) Did you hear back today? May I ask when did you complete your app?
I applied to UChicago too but I heard back nth... sigh

Oops Dec 12, I missed that, nvm. :) Did they send you an email or via phone?

Thanks for the heads up Mollie. Nothing like being on a forum board to stoke the fires of insecurity. I would also like to point out that just because one department sends out invitations doesn't mean that all departments at that school have.

Thank you belevitt, I can understand. I apologize for being a bit over anxious, but I also applied to the same Molecular Biosciences Program as phanta. I would love to know how they contact people for interviews. That would be sth good to know I guess...

And I am highlighting this and putting it in bold, because it's oh-so-true.

I didn't hear from Harvard BBS until late January the year I was applying, and at my first interview, another student mentioned that he had gotten an invitation from Harvard's Virology program, and I was sick to my stomach the entire weekend. And then I heard from Harvard the next week, because BBS and Virology don't notify at the same time. No need to make myself almost barf.

bluetypo, I turned in my application (including all supplementals) in the middle of november, well before thanksgiving break so maybe thats why it came back early? I heard via email.

just got an interview for UCLA ACCESS. they contacted me through email.

I also just got an interview invitation from UCLA ACCESS. Their deadline is today, I submitted Nov 26. which weekend are you going to, Devine? I think I'll be going 1/24-26.

Congrats ymmit and Devine! I also got an invite to one of UCLA ACCESS's interview weekends (January 24-26, and February 7-9). Does anyone know if these weekends overlap with interviews with any other major schools?

I also applied to: Stanford, UCSF, UCSD, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Rockefeller, Princeton, UW, Yale, and MIT.
