Official Boarding School Decisions and Applicant Stats

With only 5 DAYS left until decisions are released and/or mailed, I thought it would be a good time to relaunch this thread. The basic idea is that, if you feel up to it, you'll post your acceptances, rejections and waitlists along with your basic statistics for the benefit of next year's CC crowd and, of course, to give us all better insight into the admissions process at the schools we applied to.

To find your WEIGHTED and UNWEIGHTED GPA, go to Staples High School--Info--GPA Calculator

Remember, to make the code below work, you must delete the spaces within the brackets. Otherwise it will just appear as it does immediately below. The second decision line is for if you had different decisions from schools such as waitlisting or rejection. If additional decision lines are not needed, delete them. If another is, simply copy and paste and change the color to red for rejections and blue for waitlists.

Sports and extracurriculars won't be factored into the table because we all know that it's far too easy to pad and that athletics and extracurriculars are rarely predictable in their ability to help applications.

Make sure to preview your posts to make sure your code works!

Tom,

Great work. Only one suggestion: add a line for the grade applied to.

Thanks for taking this on – it’ll be very valuable for future applicants.

That’s a great idea; I wish I had edited it in within my 20 minute window.

Please, all, before you post:

Please include the grade you applied to at the top of your post.

Is TomTheCat back?

BTW, EC’s should really be included.

No, they shouldn’t. Sorry. As large as their affect is on decisions, it’s quite simply impossible for everyone to be consistent in their evaluation of their own extracurricular activities. We’ll just end up with all those nut cases out there who claim they actively play 11 sports.

If all of a sudden people became honest and it was possible to self-evaluate one’s own athletic and extracurricular achievement, I’d add in a line for extracurriculars. But both you and I know that that will never happen. Once again, sorry. I tried to make the form ask only for concrete answers that no one can put a spin on or sugarcoat unless they downright lie. With the exception of the rec lines, of course.

And, yeah. I’m back.

I’d like to see the financial aid stat as a yes no question and not just under other. I am very interested in the statistics of full pay vs fa acceptance rates. What do you think tom the cat? Would that change be ok?

Applied for fin aid? Yes or No

Yeah, that’s fine, although it’s too late for me to edit my original post.

Please include a line stating whether or not you applied for FA.

Thanks, Tom. I will be glad to post my stats on my pending acceptance (hopefully)…

One suggestion though, do not add a FA line. It is incredibly hard to predict and make a good representation of FA. We would all need to accurately post income etc., also some people may be unwilling or untruthful in doing so.

Just my two cents, thanks.

What’s the point of even having this thread if we are unable to post important information because of dishonesty

I am not saying I will and that was a sidepoint. The main point was that it is unpredictable, depends on income… and to an extent on how badly they want you. If you were amazing and needed just as much aid as someone who is not as amazing you would receive a little more.

That is how they “overcome” the no merit issue. Also FA affects decisions too heavily for us to make an accurate representation that is statistically significant.

If you want to include FA just say “app for FA: yes or no”…

My opinion, this is Tom’s thread and I will do exactly that is asked of me.

Yeah, that sounds like it’ll work. FA can have a significant effect, so I think that it is extremely important to mention it. Of course different families have different needs, but I think that it’s useful information.

FA aid is a huge factor…I mean if you don’t want to post that just don’t post at all. Because that could have a major factor on why one person was denied and another accepted.

Yes, I agree with that. So many variables though, just leave it at “yes I applied for FA” and “no I did not”.

More than that and we are screwing with too many variables.

Again, I’ll just do what Tom says.

C’mon guys, it can’t have that much impact?

It, unfortunately, can. I hate to admit it and I wish that I was not at an advantage, I want to win fairly but it does.

In this economy it is way too hard, and maybe even stupid, to turn away those who are willing to put 45k. Need blind schools and Need 20 20 vision schools alike will need all the money they can get.

By the same token if you do app. for FA it is a nice way for them to woo you.

Well what else does anyone want other than “Yes” or “No”?

Yes to whether you applied, not to whether you received.

Well if you received FA…you could easily throw that in. Thats a factor on if your going or not.
