*~*~Official Boston College Class of 2015 RD Decisions Thread~*~*

I got accepted to CAS (would have used the formating of the first post but I couldn’t get it to work haha)
ACT:32
GPA:3.95
I think I was accepted because of my strong essays, internship with my Congressman, and my recommendations (one of which was from the afore mentioned Congressman)

I’m really happy but I’m still praying for acceptances from my others (deferred ED to Cornell). Congrats to all! Hope I keep this trend going with UVA decisions going up later today!

Has anyone from Georgia or the Southeast heard anything?

Nothing in South Carolina.

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

  • Rotary Exchange student in Chile for 11 months
  • Student Rep. on School Board (I represent about 1100 students k-12)
  • Varsity Soccer
  • Varsity Tennis
  • Varsity Nordic Skiing
  • LifeSmarts - Consumer challenge. Like Jeopardy for Econ nerds. 4 member team, we’ve won at the state level the past three years and placed 4th and 3rd nationally. This year we won states and will compete in Hollywood nationally (all paid trip!)
  • Math Team
  • Outing Club (Vice President)
  • FBLA
    [] Job/Work Experience:
  • 4 years at a Marina
  • More years than I can count at my Dad’s restaurant doing catering.
    [] Volunteer/Community service:
  • Earthquake relief in Chile
  • Tons of hours with Rotary for various events, both here and in Chile.
  • Volunteered at a Chilean orphanage once a week while in Chile.
  • I put down 550+ total hours as my estimate. I probably have done more.
    [] Summer Activities:
  • Work, Work, Work, Play a little. Waterski competitively (Didn’t mention on App - should have)
[] Essays: Common App one was somewhat generic. I wrote about how I changed in my year spent abroad in Chile. I used Tim O’brien’s “The Things They Carried” for inspiration and wrote about how my “things” that I carry have changed.
[] Teacher Recommendation: They were well intended, but not extremely well written. I think they got the point across.
[] Counselor Rec: I’m assuming great - my counselor loves me and I have worked with her frequently on figuring out how to miss a year of school and not stay behind.
[] Additional Rec: Superintendent wrote about my time as Student Rep. on the school board.
    [li] Interview: Didn’t have.
[/li]

[] Income Bracket: Not sure. Probably 80k or so.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Zero.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, very good and unique ECs.
[] Weaknesses: Maybe my common app essay. I wasn’t satisfied with it. And the fact that I am missing a year on my transcript (has Pass/Fails from classes I took in Chile)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess I just fit what they were looking for.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: So far I have been accepted at UChicago, BC, Northeastern and UNH. Waiting to hear from Harvard, Brown, UPenn, Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon and Tufts… so anxious.

[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to all the accepted students! Waitlisters do not worry, in me you have at least one open spot for next year - UChicago is my top choice from schools I have been accepted to and they gave me a very good financial aid package.

Decent Common App essay about perspective through Bosnia pilgrimage (definitely not the typical volunteer/religious experience essay)

Did not see any recs but i’m assuming they were good
Hook: Maybe because I’m an Asian male (URM) that is also Catholic (Jesuit school)?

Definitely a bit of a surprise that I was accepted. I’m still waiting to hear back from Georgetown and College of William & Mary, but BC was definitely up there on my list.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NH
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Extremely small (9 seniors) Christian High School–not a lot available in course choices, extra extracurriculars, or awards (I feel as though this sadly may have been one of my weaknesses…explained later)
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: ~$65,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, lots of extracurriculars w/ leadership, writing and reading SAT, ACT score, recommendations
[] Weaknesses: Math SAT, SAT IIs, Essay, School- my school is so tiny there is little recognition. No opportunity for APs, no real class choices, no real guidance counselor. This only the second year of even having a graduating class. It was crazy trying to fight to get all of my transcripts and things in on time…but this just may be me trying to give myself a reason to feel better.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess I just am not what they are looking for in an applicant. The weaknesses I’m listed probably played a part.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted- UNH, Marist, Northeastern, Colgate
Pending- Dartmouth (Ha!) and Middlebury

[/ul]General Comments: I’m pretty sad about it. I’m sure I’ll get over it though. Getting an acceptance from Colgate today cushioned the blow, but not by much since BC was my #1 choice. (I was wearing a BC shirt today and changed as soon as I read the letter =( ) I’m nervous about what I’ll here from Middlebury tomorrow morning, and Dartmouth later next week. It may be for the best, since my graduating class is literally over 1,000 times smaller than the undergraduate population at BC, and it would be a rough adjustment.

Not sure if I’ll accept the waitlist offer. We won’t be able to pay if we don’t get decent financial aid…and I’d rather not have the stress of this on it, and knowing that I’m kinda a “second choice” for the school.

Hopefully it’s for the best, and life goes on.

PS. Sorry for writing a novel.
