Decision: Accepted

•SAT: V:710 W:700 M:580 (didn’t submit because my math score was horrible)

•ACT: didn’t take

•SAT II: didn’t submit

•Unweighted GPA: 3.97

•Weighted GPA: 4.69

•AP scores: 11th grade US history- 4, English Language and Composition- 4

•IB: none because have to be in IB magnet program to take IB classes at my school (I am in the medical magnet program at my school)

• Senior course load:French 4, AP Calculus AB, Nursing Assistant 3, AP Psychology, AP Biology, AP Literature and Composition, AP Chemistry

• Extracurriculars:
Red cross club, HOSA competitor (1st place in regionals and states in Biomedical Debate), Marine Biology Club (Treasurer), National Honor Society Board Member, French Honor Society

• Job/ Work Experience: Babysitting about 6hrs a week

• Volunteer: about 200 hours volunteering at local hospital and YMCA.

•Essays: I liked them; I thought they definitely showed the quirky ways I viewed things. The people who edited my essays also liked them.

• Teacher Recommendations: I don’t know. I’m sure that they were good, though.

• Counselor Recommendations: Iffy. There’s one counselor for about 450 kids, so I’m not really certain how good a recommendation my counselor could have written

• Interview: None. Though I kind of wished I did have one.
•Applied for financial aid: yes

• Intended major: Double major in Biology and Anthropology

• State: Florida

• School Type: Public Magnet ( Though rarely sends grads to top schools)

• Ethnicity: African American

• Gender: Female

• Income Bracket: About 30k

• Hooks: URM, only one at my school who would be applying to Bowdoin, one of about 20 kids in my senior class applying to top schools, applied through QuestBridge National College Match

• Strengths: definitely my essays and the short responses on the Quest app

• Weaknesses: my counselor rec I would think

• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t know; I know that I am a strong applicant, but so were many that applied to Bowdoin, whether through QuestBridge or ED1&2. I think that I was given a better chance of being accepted because I didn’t send in my test score and therefore the admissions counselors were forced to look deeper than numbers to the actual applicant; they weren’t initially biased against me for my not-so-stellar SAT scores, and they had insight into my personality through my essays and my teacher recommendations.

• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I applied through the QuestBridge National College Match and since I ranked 8 colleges-- and since Bowdoin wasn’t my first choice-- I was technically rejected by Yale, University of Chicago, Emory University, and Rice University. In that order. Then Bowdoin accepted me!

• General Comments: I thank my lucky stars that all those colleges rejected me (except for maybe yale-- that one still stings a bit), because I don’t know what I was thinking when I ranked any of them. If I could have ranked them all over again, they would most definitely be a whole lot different. I am really happy, though, that I get to go to Bowdoin; the more I look at it, the more I love it. And I got an amazing scholarship package! My mom is pretty psyched about that part, I can tell you.

Teacher Recommendation: Stellar, one from debate coach, one from US teacher who told me I was her best writer, and one from World His/UIL Coach that prob combined leadership, resolve, and desire to learn

Counselor Rec: Good, I had developed a relationship with her and she was impressed by my AP scores and UIL results, plus at my school we have to fill out a really long short answer form for their reference when writing a rec

Interview: Went to campus and felt a connection immediately with interviewer, which encouraged my ed

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejec: Only got one acceptance letter by the time I got Bows at my safety, UT, and its Plan 1 honors program, but I was planning on applying to Haverford, Amherst, Bates, Carleton, Connecticut, Brown, UT’s Plan II, and Oberlin

Congrats to those who got in. Bowdoin is a phenomenal school. If I can do anything to get in, I would. It’s a bummer that I did not get in Bowdoin because it is my top choice. [] Volunteer/Community service:

Teacher’s Assistant for my Soph. English teacher (55 hours)

[] Essays:
Common App – my mom’s influence on me: coming from Czech Republic during Communism, starting from nothing, etc… – my Eng. teacher told me it was heartbreaking and one of the few memorable ones he’s read in years
Bowdoin supplement – how Spanish (and languages in general) have broadened my perspective –> Bowdoin’s acceptance of many views, etc…
[] Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t read them but I can (probably) rightfully assume that they are incredibly positive and insightful. As a follow-up recommendation, one of my teachers called the school instead of writing and said it was the first time in 15 years that he’s called a school on behalf of a student.
[] Counselor Rec: Not sure… probably good. I’m not very close with her.
[li] Interview: I wish it didn’t have to be this way but it was my very first interview… ever… and over the summer. Naturally, I was nervous and my voice probably betrayed that on more than one occasion. But I have no regrets about it, really. It was fine.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yep.
[] Intended Major: English
[] State (if domestic applicant): NY
[] School Type: Small public school; graduating class has 110 or so students…

[] Hooks: first generation, background…

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Common App essay, transcript, teacher recs (& phone call), full schedule (tri-season athlete)…
[] Weaknesses: Uh… the Bowdoin supp essay was probably a little too generic for a highly competitive LAC but… it couldn’t have been awful… nothing too noteworthy when it comes to how I spend my time; no job experience…
[li] Why you think you were deferred: Again, it means I’m what they want but people applied who were better and worse… I can’t pin it on any one thing… which is all the more frustrating.[/li][/ul]General Comments: I still let them know they’re my number one, wrote both my area representative and the Dean about how not only is the school a good fit for ME but how I am a good fit for BOWDOIN… Meiklejohn said it was a “good letter” but I’m not sure what the hell that means… My fingers are crossed but there’s nothing I can do now…

Essays:
Common App – Living with a host family in France, the various linguistic impediments to communication in both French and English.
Bowdoin supplement – Finding an academic environment where people were unafraid to be passionate about their interests - something I experienced in high school and recognized at Bowdoin.
Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read, but can safely guess that one was exceptional and the other was also extremely positive though not quite on a par (I’m very close to one of the teachers who wrote for me)
Counselor Rec: Didn’t like me very much, but I’m sure it was solid. No way she’d intentionally sabotage a student.
Supplementary Rec: 8 year old for whom I babysit. She’s quite articulate
Interview: Student interviewer which only occurred at Bowdoin. The interview itself was great though, couldn’t have asked for a better one.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: English
State (if domestic applicant): NY
School Type: Small, private, all-girls.
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <$50,000
Hooks: The closest thing approaching a hook for any application would be ballet I think, not especially helpful at Bowdoin (although the dance department is being expanded)

Reflection
Strengths: Essay (I think), Extracurriculars, Work Experience
Weaknesses: Some bad grades on my transcript from freshman/sophomore year, leading to a weaker GPA than my junior/senior fall grades would suggest.
Why you think you were rejected: I wish they told you this! (Not just Bowdoin, anyone) I suppose I simply wasn’t of the calibre they were looking for, or didn’t seem like I’d be a good fit.
General Comments: Devastated sounds melodramatic, but it’s accurate. Congratulations to all those who were accepted though and enjoy Bowdoin - it’s a really unique, special place.

Essays:
Common App – Downeast Maine school system’s change of environment with regards to the LGBT.
Bowdoin supplement – About the layers and integrative nature of a good education, evaluating my own experiencing.
Teacher Recommendation: The one I got to read was good, focused on what I want to do – write and why. The other two are from two of the most inspirational teachers I’ve had in my life, very close relationships. Graduates from Skidmore, Boston U, and Reed.
Counselor Rec: So surprising. I didn’t know her all that well and she hit the nail on the head.
Supplementary Rec:

Reflection
Strengths: Writing and reading, language and general has been the thing I live for. I think the personality and character traits that were expressed in the recommendations were accurate and what I needed to get across.
Weaknesses: Math. Math on my transcript. Math on my SATs.
Why you think you were rejected: A lot of applicants, as usual, more in-staters than I expected. Otherwise, I suppose I just don’t know.
General Comments: And a top choice, in essence, swept away.

how many get offered admission off the waitlist at a school the caliber of Bowdoin?

Teacher Recommendation: didn’t get to read them, but on my Colgate acceptance, they handwrote on the letter that my recommendations were great, so I guess that’s a good sign!
Counselor Rec: My principal wrote it, and I did get to read it. Talked about how I really left an impact on the school
Additional Rec: My mock trial coach, a judge, wrote one for me.
Interview: Great! We were basically the same person just 4 years different in age.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My uncle was best friends and fraternity brothers with the president back when they still had fraternities. I’m not going to lie, I think it surely helped

Reflection
Strengths: Extracurriculars (community service amount), also, my high school does not frequently send students to great colleges, so to come out of a pretty socioeconomically diverse area with not a great school reputation, it must help. I think the interview helped
Weaknesses: scores, and I doubt I stood out much
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably my interview combined with my relative
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted Colgate, William and Mary (Monroe Scholar), Wake Forest, Penn State (Honors College). Waitlisted at Amherst. Deferred ED at Dartmouth, hearing back from them on Thursday and Williams later tonight

[] Essays: The Common App essay was really powerful. It discussed an important time in my life (too personal to mention on CC) and how I grew/learned from it. My Bowdoin Supp. essay talked about how my AP U.S. History course helped me grow as a person and how my overall HS career helped me develop into the smart individual I am today. I believe both essays were very powerful.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, Interest and applying myself in HS.
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores,
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was admitted because I showed A LOT OF INTEREST. Mr. Meiklejohn came to my school in 2008 and 2009 to talk about Bowdoin, and I went. I did the interview. I applied for the Bowdoin Invitational (I couldn’t go because of conflicting dates with the ACT but nonetheless, the fact that my intent was on going showed a lot). I emailed him 1 week after I sent in my application to touch base and make sure he received all of the neccessary materials to make a decision. Overall, I showed mass amount of interest. Bowdoin was the only school I showed that much interest for and it obviously paid off. Matter of fact, in the early write letter, at the bottom of the letter it said “I enjoyed seeing you at [X high school] for 2 years. Come to Bowdoin!” All the interest that I’ve shown only helped my application.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to: [Babson College, Hamilton College, Vassar College, Wheaton College]. Waitlisted at : [Amherst College and Fordham University]. Rejected at : [University of Chicago].[/li][/ul]General Comments:: I’m so thankful that I got accepted into Bowdoin College. The mass amount of interest that I’ve shown, applying myself in HS and trying my hardest to be a competitive applicant has paid off.
