wait, what does applying RD have anything to do with financial aid? Is there a greater chance of recieving financial aid if you apply RD rather than ED or something?

RD means you have other options for colleges, while ED means you are, for that year, committed to the college you got accepted to ED. I can't say it has any tangible effect, but the ED college certainly has a bit more leverage when it comes to the generosity of the financial aid.

Mannn guys, I have homework that I haven't done yet, but all I want to do is work on my Brown essays.

Slash talk about Brown on CC.

SUP.

Edit: OH MY GOD THIS IS MY 2^10TH POST AHHH!

LOL same here. I have physics to do, but I'm just sitting here talking to friends and working on my essays. I wish we could have time off from school just to focus on apps and essays. It would make life so much better.

bumping for the sake of bumping

Sup guys.

The more I read, the more attached I get to Brown. But I'm afraid to label it my "top choice" because I don't wanna get TOO attached and end up disappointed...

I'm applying RD too! Never actually visited the campus so too scared to apply ED as it's binding and all

I'm applying RD. Mainly applying for PLME (my 1st choice as far as medical programs go) but would still love to go to brown. Seems like one of the most unique schools anywhere.

yeah i know. plme's top on my list -- if i get into plme, it's almost pretty much guaranteed brown for me

I'm applying to PLME too! just so nervous about the essays...

Yayyyy RDers!!! I like browsing the Brown forum, but on the first page all there is is stuff about ED, ED, ED...I'm glad I dug up this nugget! We should really get this going...so let's do it! Why does everyone love Brown, why RD and not ED, what major, who's visited/overnighted?

Well, I'm doing RD and not ED because even though it's my first choice (although I'm hesitant to say that 'cause I don't want to get too attached and end up disappointed...), I don't want to commit to anything, lol. Gotta keep my options open.

I am positive that I want to major in cognitive neuroscience... and Brown is frickin' excellent at that, from what I hear. (And yes, I know, I might change my mind, but as for right now, I'm sure that it's what I want to study.)

I visited for two weeks over the summer for Summer@Brown; I took the course 'Nervous System in Health and Disease.' :]

Which brings me to... why I love Brown! deep breath Hmm, well, I know that you can't really completely accurately (whoa lots of adverbs) judge the atmosphere of a college by going over the summer, but from what I experienced of it, I just LOVED it. Like, it's so intellectual without being stuck up; it's so... welcoming. And Thayer Street is full of win, from the Greek restaurant (I forget what it's called) to Spectrum India (my favorite place EVER. The man who owns it is probably the nicest person in the world.) And the SciLi is frickin' amazing; the first time I went in it, I was like, "I want to LIVE in this building," lol. (And who wouldn't want to go somewhere where the student body at one point held the world record for biggest Tetris game ever by creating a Tetris game out of lights on a 14-story building? Which btw is color-coded by pH?!?) And Boston is just $8 and an hour away (my friends went one weekend), which is cool if you wanna get out of Providence (which btw I think is a REALLY pretty city.) And there are always cool things going on, even in the middle of summer -- while I was there, the Democratic Student Union of the area (not just Brown but also RISD and URI) hosted a showing of V for Vendetta, which was really fun (everyone was so welcoming and nice!), and I also heard about some other shows and events that I didn't get a chance to attend.

Umm yeah I could reminisce for a whiiile about all the things I loved about Brown, lol. (OH I forgot... I also love the educational philosophy. Brown really seems like a place where people go to learn for the sake of learning, which is frickin' awesome.)

Sooo yeah, I dunno... it just seems like it'd be a really great place to be.

I see a lot of potentially "Why Brown" answers in your post!

Poseur i know what you mean. I'm ED and I think i'm a little too attached to Brown because I'm not exactly close to being an ideal applicant. I'm only getting higher from excitement to fall harder later. ugh

Haha Mandolive- you and I are exactlyy in the same boat then :P
Good luck :) I'm so nervous!

i just found out my GPA is estimated at like 3.7! stupid school system

hahahaha I'm glad people are picking up this thread. I made it to meet other Brown RDers so we could just enjoy the process before the Jan 1st deadline -- and maybe a bit more after we wait for the responses.

I just wish I could have done something like Poseur did -- I would have loved to visit Brown (I did a UC Berk internship this summer [yep I'm a WestCoast person] -- I could write everything that's cool about UC Berkeley haha). It seems like a really relaxing place and I really could use a break from like...supercompetition of high school if you guys know what I mean and just focus on science. And to Poseur -- a pH COLORED BUILDING?!? Oh my god, I'm like going to put that on my essay or something. That's freaking awesome. Nerdpride :]

I'm aiming for biochemistry for the moment, but I'm almost sure I'm gonna change cuz I don't think I really know what any of these majors really encapsulate -- too detailed and unknown to actually know from a high school standpoint imo.

and to beeish, your UW or Weighted GPA?

That's funny, 'cause UC Berkeley sounds like the type of place I'd really like... but I'm East Coast so I'm not applying! :| Haha I guess we have similar taste... hope we both do well in the admissions lottery! ;]

And yeah, the buildings have pH color codes for the levels. >:] It's not colored like that on the outside, though. D: Haha, apparently the SciLi was voted "ugliest building in Providence" ('cause of the outside) and was simultaneously at the top of a "best interior design" list ('cause it's so awesome inside.)

Also, found a website for the Tetris thing: La Bastille: A Tech House Art Installation!! Go to the photos page; it's freakin' awesome.

LOL "Some visitors from MIT, home of hacking." as one of the photo captions

Hahaha and yes, Poseur I'll trade homes with you for just a few days? Just to see how Brown is like. But yeah, just to deviate from the topic, Berkeley's quite a nice place. It's suburban, has really nice eating areas (AsianGhetto ftw hehe), and has a bunch of shops you can explore. A lot of people have concerns about the safety of the school, but to be honest that's only bad if you like run 20 miles away from the campus at 1 am in the morning. Otherwise, there are so many people on campus you feel pretty safe.

But yeah, having lived here all my life, the thing I'm most curious about is the aesthetic parts of the Ivies and Brown -- like you don't say "Berkeley is amazingly beautiful" but rather that it has good academics. I always hear how the princeton and brown campuses are nice...dunno if that's true or not

wait, poseur, i did summer@brown in 2007, and i completely agree with almost everything you said <33

my friends and i still talk about the scili and its decibel limits AND thayyyy
