Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My ACT score was way below average, my extracurriculars may not seem much even though thats all my school offered that interested me, and my interview was awkward and unexpected. My counselor said in the context of my school I did great, but in my area, its tough.

Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: tutor, church pianist, help out at food banks, events for Beta club
Summer Activities: several music camps for piano, one math camp, nothing big
Essays (rating 1-10, details): personal essay: 9; after reading over it about a month after submitting my app, I realized I could have written it a little better overall, but I really liked how I expressed my growth from a certain experience. I didn’t mention academics at all. Supplemental essays: 6; I really could have spent more time on these–entirely my fault. They just weren’t specific enough to both me and Brown.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 8; Math; I have had her for 3 years and she’s a really nice lady, but I never really got to know her personally bc she never talks about her personal life. She did write me a rec for my math camp two summers ago though, and it was really good. I have done well in all my math classes with her.
Teacher Rec #2: 7; Chem; I’m not really sure what to expect from her. I did hear that she rejected a student’s request this year, which tells me it couldn’t be bad, but I was definitely not the strongest in the class (I hated chem), nor did I get really good grades. We did talk outside of class though, and I know she likes me.
Counselor Rec: 8; she was new this year, but we really hit it off the first time we talked. She really seemed to like me and loved my college choices (we talked about them for a long time).
Additional Rec: 8; Orchestra teacher; I have had him for 3 years and he’s by far my favorite teacher. However, I only recently started to actually talk to him outside of class, so it’s not like he knows me very well personally.
Interview: 5; I had my interview over the phone and it lasted for exactly an hour. He couldn’t really answer some of my questions because he graduated 50 years ago, so he didn’t get to experience the open curriculum and things have changed a lot. That wasn’t the bad part though; his first question really caught me off guard, so I stuttered a lot and had a super long and awkward pause. It did get better, but overall I was pretty unhappy with the way I handled things. I also didn’t phrase my answers well at all. Guess I was too nervous. He was a really nice guy though and wished me the best of luck at the end.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: Physics
State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 100k-150k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection:

Strengths: I am fairly accomplished in music; I’ve won several state piano competitions and consistently get 1st or 2nd chair (violin) in Region and All-State orchestras. My musical involvement also extends to church; I lead worship, play for church service, and accompany the adult choir. Highlighting my musical involvements exemplified my passion for music and how I use it to serve my community.
Weaknesses: Stats were just very weak overall; GPA, rank, and AP and standardized scores could have been a lot better. I kind of slacked throughout all four years of high school, especially in subjects I didn’t particularly care for, like social studies and biology (oops). Also, I never got personal with any of my teachers, so my recs may not have been the best. My biggest regret was not spending more time on my supplemental essays. It wasn’t until I started working on my other college essays that I realized how vague my Brown ones were. They didn’t really say enough about me and my personality, and I don’t think I expressed my love for Brown and physics as well as I could have.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: supplemental essays weren’t strong enough. Another big thing was that I wrote about my involvement with music for a large portion of my app, but I never had the time to prepare and record a concert-ready piece to send in. I will do that over break, and hopefully it’ll help in the regular round. Also, I realize my GPA and scores are kind of in the right range but considering I’m Asian, the expectations might be a little higher.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted to University of South Carolina (safe school; I’m still going to apply to several more colleges now that I got deferred)

General Comments: I wrote most of this before I found out my decision, so hardly any of it was influenced by the decision. I wasn’t really sure what to expect (probably mostly rejection), but I’m ok with being deferred. Even though Brown is definitely my dream school, I realize there’s plenty of other colleges as great as Brown and I’ll be just as happy going to another college. Congrats to everyone who got accepted! I’m so happy for you. And to those who got rejected, hang in there. Like I said, you still have a bunch of great options and you’ll love it wherever you go! Best of luck to everyone on the rest of their college decisions and have a great break! I’ll be busy working on the rest of my college apps…lol.

Weaknesses: Asian (tbh)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: definitely essays and recs
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: none bc ED

General Comments:
IM SCREEAAAAMMMIIINGNNGGGGGGGGGG
for most of the year i was freaking out about not having physics, especially since i emphasized medicine a lot on my app, but i guess my essays showcased my personality, that i wasnt just some robot in high school, so they definitely decide based on your personality. also to future applicants: DEVELOP AND FIND YOUR PASSION EARLY. I didnt know that i wanted to study public health till the start of my senior year, and i honestly joined clubs just because i was interested, not knowing what i wanted to study in the future. Do things that you want to do, and your passions will shine through. For me, it was through UNICEF, medicine, and community service. But nevertheless, my interests showed the humanitarian side of me, which i could tie in to public health. Good luck to all of you out there!!

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I would give mine a solid 9. I wrote about some weird-ass stuff, but it was succinct and rather creative. To be more specific, I wrote about my hard move from city to island, my difficulty with independence (anxiety, and my ability to not control everything) tied with my faith TRANSLATED through my struggle with driving, as well as my endless lurvveeeeee of writing.

weird stuff gyals

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): read below

Teacher Rec #1: WAIVED RIGHT TO READ (Biology/Anatomy teacher)
Teacher Rec #2: WAIVED RIGHT TO READ
Counselor Rec: ditto for the above
Additional Rec: got one from my french tutor, BUT WAIVED RIGHT TO READ
Interview: 5/10 (I f*ked up bad ok; I was pretty bland, but I made an impression. A bad one). I’m still sighing over this one. It lasted barely 30 minutes and although he said he would write me a good rec, I wasn’t convinced.

However, if I had to give a rating, maybe a 7 to 10?

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: yah man
Intended Major: English (creative writing) or French lang & lit
State (if domestic applicant): US Virgin Islands
Country (if international applicant): some consider us international, but evidently we are not - hence the US part.
School Type: private, preparatory school
Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 30,000 - 35,000 (if you can’t tell, I’m a brokeass ho). both parents are WAITERS (i, too, am a waiter. On occasion).
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m broke; I had a traumatic move from NY to Virgin Islands (was not mentally or socially ready) after sophomore year; study outside of school for French; unique major; from the USVI; do research outside of school too…?; top 5 in grade??? who actually knows though ok

Reflection:

Strengths: creative writing + french; traumatic move; i’m really, really broke; from USVI (island gyal); wrote a few novels
Weaknesses: GPA; average standardized tests; not too many summer activities
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: BECAUSE I WASN’T GOOD ENOUGH OK. (jk, but honestly it was crushing reading that letter). probs cuz my GPA and summer activities were rather…lacking.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: this is my first letter, so to say I’m down is a bit of an understatement. Just a bit, though. But I did apply EA to UChicago, and regular to a boatload of others (Swarthmore, Williams, Michigan, Amherst, NYU, Vanderbilt, etc…)

General Comments: If you couldn’t tell by the end, I’m a pretty sarcastic little sh!t. However, I am really* crushed, but I want to say that no matter what, we did our best, polished ourselves to a blinding sheen; so even though we weren’t accepted (yet, hopefully), we still got a chance.

Also - live long and prosper mellon

Weaknesses: Subject Tests,
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I’m a really unique candidate, being a male gymnast, flute player, theater kid, among other things. Italian major helped. My personality really fit and Brown, and I think it helped being one of the first applicants from my typically conservative school. I really emphasized my social activism, and I think my application left a meaningful impression.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Only applied to Brown.

General Comments: I’m honestly thrilled. I wasn’t expecting to get in, and I tried to keep my expectations low. I’m honestly most happy that I don’t have to fill out 20 applications, because I didn’t start them. But overall, I’m ecstatic.

Reflection:

Strengths: Art portfolio, testing scores
Weaknesses: …maaaaaaybe GPA. Also no national, BIG awards. I’m not sure if my ethnicity is a + or - because I am Asian but not East Asian.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Frankly, I can’t say. I thought I was a strong candidate, but admissions are a crapshoot and people I know who were equally qualified didn’t get in. But I think one of my strongest points was that everything I did led back to two things I’m passionate about: art and writing. I think presenting a strong interest, rather than dabbling in everything, is important.

General Comments:
Incredibly happy. Burst into tears when I found out, still a little light-headed.
I’m going to be quite honest–I made an account just to make this post, but because I myself have been a frantic stalker of this forum for the past few months and worked myself into several near-panic attacks reading this. So this is my way of giving back to the community, I suppose. And while I am indescribably happy, I also think that I stressed myself out a little too much reading this forum. So what I want to say to the person reading my post is:

You are a fantastic candidate for any school you go to. Really.

Always have several safeties.
Treat yoself.
