Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App Essay: 7.5/10 - Talked about my transition from middle school to high school and how it has shaped me to become the person I am today through a small anecdote of when I first met my best friend.

Short Answers: 10/10 - I really expressed my interest at Brown and how their education will guarantee me opportunities that will benefit not only me but the world as well (since I intend to major Environmental Science).

Additional Info Essay: 8.5/10 - This essay was my only shot at getting into these Ivy’s when I first applied. I talked about my circumstances at home and within my community. I explained why I got the scores I did but also emphasized my love for learning and how I intend to be successful one day no matter where I go.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: Pre-Calc Teacher: 10/10 - I was her first-year student at my school and I was also the one out of two only Sophomores in this class so she grew increasingly close to every one of us. She mentioned about my intense love for math and how I impacted her at a personal level (was shocked when I read this part lol in a good way btw!)

Teacher Rec #2: Honors Chemistry Teacher: 7/10- I had her my sophomore year and she is also the advisor for the STEM program here at my school so I am pretty close to her. She had good things to say about me but nothing special. Nonetheless, I am forever grateful for the recommendation.

Teacher Rec #3: Japanese Teacher: didn’t get to read it since she did submit it a day before the deadline I think lol but I’m assuming it was good considering I was one of the few students who took 3 years of Japenese and I was also awarded, with another student, a state recognition award.

Counselor Rec: don’t know as well, didn’t get to read it.
Interview: Was very short, about 15 minutes but she seemed like she was in a rush because she only asked about 5 questions and said it was time for her to go. But she did say I emphasized my responses and seemed like a good kid. I asked her more questions after the interview via email.

Reflection
Strengths: Short Answer Responses, Recs, Additional Info Essay
Weaknesses: Standardized Test Scores!!!
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was waitlisted because my scores weren’t up to par BUT I also feel extremely grateful to the committee for giving me this opportunity and not rejecting me completely. I didn’t think I would make it at all but when I saw those bold words that said I was waitlisted, I felt in a way relieved? It’s a crazy world indeed.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: Rutgers University
Semi-Acceptance (I guess???): Cornell University - was given the transfer option to attend my Sophomore year!!!
Rejected: Princeton University, Stanford University

General Comments: Don’t do the same thing I did and only apply to top tier schools. My safe school was Rutgers University so I knew if anything, I would be attending there but still. I regret not applying to second tier schools such as Bryn Mawr, Barnard, Colgate, and etc. Not saying you shouldn’t apply to the Ivys but be smart about it. Apply to as many as you can and just show the real you and explain your circumstances if you have any. It goes to show these universities review your app in a holistic manner.

Summer Activities: Is studying an activity? IB is intense.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App 8/10 - Wrote about how I thought my identities didn’t fit together and how I learned to be okay with that through TED Talks. The essay was nothing sensational but it was really really honest. Maybe that helped?
The Extra Curricular Essay 9- I never give myself nines without cringing but I was super proud of this one. Wrote it as a kind of short story.
Areas of study 7: Pretty average but I tried to show that I’d really thought it through.
Why Brown 7: Kinda cheesy tbh. But talked in depth about Brown’s specific programs in Public Policy and English.
Where you’ve lived 9: Described the streets I have lived on, again kinda short story-esque.
Community 7: Talked about my family. Kinda mushy and emotional but oh well…
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Counselor Rec: I can’t say I didn’t read it. But we had a decent enough relationship so I guess it was pretty average. So maybe a 7?

Teacher Rec #1: English Teacher, again didn’t read. She’s known me for a while and was also my drama teacher. She’sa great writer so maybe that also helped.
Teacher Rec #2: Physics teacher, and yes, I didn’t read this one either. But Again she’s taught me throughout high school so she knows me really well.
Additional Rec: None.
Interview: 6/10, it was rather awkward. I’m not the most conversational person, I feel uncomfortable talking to strangers and I think she sensed that. Also I feel like she expected me to steer the conversation and I just didn’t do that. We did manage to talk about Volunteering and my love for Spanish though, so maybe she liked that.

Reflection

Strengths: Some essays. Recommendations? I don’t really know.
Weaknesses: SAT IIs!!! Extra Curriculars aren’t stunning.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Honestly, I have no idea. After getting my deferral from UChicago I started to question whether I’d get in anywhere at all.On the flip side though, that deferral made me work really hard on my other college essays. So maybe the short story approach to the essays helped me out? shrugs
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: Columbia, Hopkins, Smith.
Waitlisted: UChicago and Bates.
Rejected: Wellesley.
General Comments :
I am just extremely relieved and grateful. I cannot count the number of hours I’ve spent on this site reading other’s stats and achievements. And during all those hours the prevailing feeling was a sense of inadequacy. I never believed that an acceptance from a school like Brown could happen to me and I came very close, many times to not even applying. I’ve realised that disappointments are normal and they are okay, some days we lose and other days we win more than we ever thought possible. Apply anyway, work hard, keep trying, be kind to yourself, your dreams will come true in ways that will surprise you. Congrats to every one who got in, I hope you have a brilliant 4 years

Teacher Rec #1: 8 (she really loves me, and I’m sure praised me highly, but is a Spanish teacher, so not the best writer)

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Neuroscience
State (if domestic applicant): New York
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 170k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection

Strengths: Strong test scores and grades, lots of extracurriculars because of small high school, specifics passions for science and music (10+ instruments), well-rounded
Weaknesses: no hooks, interview, no spectacular accomplishments, lack of opportunities at my high school, too cookie cutter/typical high-achiever student profile
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: perhaps that I made it very clear that I wanted to go to Brown because I loved the campus and neuroscience program, not just looking for admission to an Ivy; it’s really a mystery
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted at Kenyon, University of Rochester, SUNY Geneseo, and Denison

General Comments : It was a wonderful surprise that I got in - people from Western New York rarely get accepted to top schools such as this; to have the opportunity to go from a town of 5,000 to Brown is incredible; I wish I could see how they made their admissions decisions this year; congratulations to everyone else who got in!

Decision: Rejected

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown):

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A, definitely in top 10

IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: 4 APs, two other courses
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 2nd place nationally in an extracurricular

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): very involved in extracurricular mentioned above, at local/state/national level.
Job/Work Experience: Not really
Volunteer/Community service: Internship, some community service related to major.
Summer Activities: Internship + several community college courses on subjects I wanted to take, NOT courses that I’d have to take at my high school anyway.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Main Common App was probably a 7/10. My Brown-specific ones were around a 7.5/10, 6/10, 6/10, and 9/10.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: AMAZING, read it. 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: Probably very impersonal, but never actually read it. 5/10?
Counselor Rec: 7/10, didn’t read but guessing
Additional Rec: 9/10, didn’t read but have very strong relationship
Additional Rec #2: Probably 6/10, shouldn’t have sent.
Interview: Good, but not outstanding.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Social Sciences
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None at all

Reflection

Strengths: Very high quality supplement submitted (humble brag), ACT above median, all-A grades, super involved in an extracurricular and I think my essays showed my passion for the major I indicated.
Weaknesses: No hooks. Tons of applicants from my school that had just as much to offer and it probably came down to minute things.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Don’t listen to people’s guesses, we just don’t know. Why do I think I was rejected? Because I was a typical high-quality applicant, from whom Brown receives tens of thousands of applications each year. Most who apply deserve to go and would fit well and would thrive, but they simply don’t have room. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but if you’re in the minority (whether female in STEM, Native-American applicant) or you have legacy, you may have an easier shot.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: An Ivy and a quasi-Ivy. Brown was my top so I was a little heartbroken, but I can get over it.

General Comments: By the way, deferral->acceptance rate this year was around 5%. Don’t make the mistake of expecting much RD, deferred Class of 2022 applicants! Try to forget about Brown, and the rejection won’t hurt too much. If you do happen to get in, it’ll be a pleasant surprise!

Decision: Accepted**

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

1 Common App- 10/10 - i went for the basic "tell us about your background" story - my experiences as a middle class white passing lesbian in a very rich + conservative suburban town, my awful relationship with my immigrant parents and the pressures i faced as a first gen college student etc and how writing + journalism and a passion for social issues managed to save my life through the years.

2 (Why major?) - 9/10 - talked about poli sci + english and went with the passion for it - writing about social issues and wanting to make a change but i managed to make it sound not boring?

3 (Why Brown?) - 10/10 - brown had always been my massive reach school, i had visited the campus for the first time my freshman year, talked about that a bit + the liberal arts atmosphere in a university which sort of fit my personality the best - how different it was from where i grew up

4 (Where you've lived) - 10/10 - talked about my dislike of where i grew up lol similar to my common app + why brown? but delved more into the really complex feelings i had about it

5 (Importance of community) - 10/10 - my cheesy ass talked about my friend group and how it was one place i found complete acceptance and people who shared my interests and had unconditional love for me

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at Northwestern, Emerson, Boston University, American, Occidental, Berkeley, GWU, NYU. Waitlisted at UCLA + USC.

General Comments: I AM BEYOND HAPPY! I committed to Brown after a huge decesion making split for about two weeks. Hope to see some of you there

I emailed admissions about what kind of grades I would need to not get rescinded and they replied with this:
"we think it is especially important that you maintain the trajectory of your 11th and 12th grade trend. Our research has shown that students who finish strongly at graduation are better prepared for success at Brown (this also holds greater weight for students interested in STEM, chem in your case.)

I would recommend continuing to work hard through the end of your senior year in order to receive no more than 1 B in your courses. Again, congratulations on your acceptance and I’m looking forward to welcoming you to Brown! "

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
my common app essay is probably my proudest work- definitely a 10
specific essays to Brown- I felt like most were an 8 or 9, but I know that I felt I wouldn’t get in because I barely elaborated on the describe your home essay and didn’t even think about how that might reflect on me until after I had submitted

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
debate coach- definitely a 10
favorite teacher- 8 or 9 (biggest problem was weird grammar errors)
counselor- no idea, never read it, didn’t know them very well but they got to know me better senior year and mentioned some things they would say so I think it was probably pretty good

Interview: went well, but it definitely wasn’t my most interesting or relaxed interview just because of how the interviewer was (she was nice, don’t get me wrong)

Reflection

Strengths: really good essay, strong commitment and success in my two main extracurriculars, really good GPA, maybe being disabled?

Weaknesses: perhaps test scores, also that I am somewhat generic

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think Brown could tell through my essays and activities and grades that I am really passionate about learning and their learning model, and that I really do put my all into everything I do.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: UPenn, University of Notre Dame, Northeastern (with honors scholarship), University of Washington
Waitlisted: Vanderbilt, Northwestern
Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Stanford (after early action deferral)

General Comments : I will be attending Brown. I would really encourage rising seniors to write their essay during the summer like I did. I think my essay helped me the most.

This is really late but better late than never.

I would stay after class a lot to talk to my teachers. They genuinely like me, and they probably helped me get into the schools I did.
