<p>NEW QUESTION
[*] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Played baseball for 5 years with a bunch of boys on a mixed team. Definitely a great learning experience.</p>

<p>Decision: Deferred</p>

<p>Objective:[ul]
[<em>] SAT I (breakdown): 2120, 760 CR, 660 M, 700 W
[</em>] ACT: 29 (First standardized test, didn’t study, should have retaken it)
[<em>] SAT II: 800 World History, 790 US History, 760 Literature
[</em>] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.76
[<em>] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 6/296

[<em>] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[</em>] Senior Year Course Load: AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP Spanish Language, AP English Literature, AP Computer Science, AP US Government (AP Microeconomics 2nd semester) French 2, Physics Honors
[<em>] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National AP Scholar, and a few minor school awards
[/ul]
Subjective:[ul]
[</em>] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Key Club International, National Honor Society (Secretary), Quiz Bowl Team (Captain), Junior Class (Treasurer)
[<em>] Job/Work Experience:
[</em>] Volunteer/Community service: Just with my service clubs
[<em>] Summer Activities:
[</em>] Essays: I thought they came out pretty decently. My biggest issue was that I didn’t proofread (beyond plugging into spellcheck) my supplement questions, and I never had anyone else read them. My main essay was a bit stuffy but I thought it had a bit of “charm” so to speak and was reviewed several times by multiple teachers.
[<em>] Teacher Recommendation: My French teacher’s recommendation had to be positively fantastic. My other recommendation came from a teacher I had for three straight years in AP classes I got 5’s on, but I still think it could have been a bit generic.
[</em>] Counselor Rec: I read it, it was somewhat cheesy but I thought it was pretty good. She used a few examples from my school activities, and even did some research from my teachers.
[<em>] Additional Rec:
[</em>] Interview: I thought it was pretty generic-albeit good. I just don’t feel anything stood out.
[/ul]
Other[ul]
[<em>] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup.
[</em>] Intended Major: I put Math and Applied Math. Let’s not talk about why. I was crazy when I put that down.
[<em>] State (if domestic applicant): FL
[</em>] Country (if international applicant):
[<em>] School Type: Public, not really interesting but not a particularly bad school.
[</em>] Ethnicity: White
[<em>] Gender: Male
[</em>] Income Bracket: Relatively well-off
[<em>] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation. Otherwise I was pretty uncompetitive I think.
[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[</em>] Strengths: Subjective info (teachers, counselor and essays) went pretty well I think.
[<em>] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Uh… I didn’t.
[</em>] Weaknesses: ^^^^ And also, my standardized scores really should have been better. I’ll be retaking the ACT in February I think…
[<em>] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I wasn’t particularly competitive, but not so bad that a rejection was appropriate. Maybe they just want someone generic to pick from after all the cool and interesting applicants run out?
[</em>] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Only applied Brown ED
[/ul]

<p>NEW QUESTION
[*] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I thought it was my epilepsy research.</p>

<p>Hi guys!</p>

<p>For those accepted, congratulations! I am absolutely positive that you will both gain much from the Brown experience as well as contribute much to the Brown community. </p>

<p>Alternatively, if today wasn’t your day, stay strong. You’re in all likelihood going to end up at the right place for you, be it Brown or elsewhere. The downside of admissions being so competitive nowadays is that so many qualified applicants aren’t accepted; but there is an upside - when you do get in somewhere fabulous (spoiler alert: you will!), you will have been admitted not only because the Adcom decided you were qualified, but also because they are confident you will thrive there. So, wherever you end up, I am confident that it will be a place where you will do amazing things (As a Brown student, I selfishly hope that place is Brown, but if not, that’s our loss as much as it is another school’s gain).</p>

<p>In the meantime, here is an excellent article from the Blog Daily Herald (Brown’s student blog) by a student who was deferred a few years back: [We</a> feel your pain, we swear — BlogDailyHerald — BlogDailyHerald](<a href=“http://blogdailyherald.com/2012/12/12/we-feel-your-pain-we-swear/]We”>http://blogdailyherald.com/2012/12/12/we-feel-your-pain-we-swear/).</p>

[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Quarter grades / 9th grade grades. - I went to an international school and there, the grading was by bell curve percentiles, with 94+ being an A rather than letter grades. [ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): hitting on the important ones w/o giving away my identity: 2 varsity sports (nearly but not quite recruitable for one of them - takes up sooo much time), pretty high state/southern section rankings for the main sport i mentioned, clubs (president of a couple), classical dance (>10 yrs, graduated from my dance academy, lots of performances), scioly (varsity team, few medals here and there, went to nats), duketip/jhucty courses, etc etc… ecs/leaderships are honestly too much to list… lol if you’re really curious pm me.

[ *] Essays: Best work I’ve ever done. Common app essay 10/10; brown supplemental essays 9/10 for some, 10/10 for others (quirky and creative); PLME essays 11/10 (is that possible? lol i just really felt like that coupled with my research stuff got me through plme… I really think that I showed a genuine passion for medicine and that i was a perfect fit for the program (i’m soooo not just a science kid). Fortunately, writing is one of my best assets. It truly helps in the college admission process.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: Read one and it was so humbling. Amazingly written and nearly made me cry. Didn’t see the other one, but the teacher also really liked me, and considering that I got in, i’m assuming it was also excellent.
[ *] Counselor Rec: big school so I don’t know him THAT well but he really seemed to like me so i’m assuming it was quite good.
[ *] Additional Rec: 2 from my two research mentors. Read one of them and I’m honestly certain that it sealed the deal (compared me to residents and fellows and commented on my research skills and scientific talents). Absolutely breathtaking. I’m assuming the other one was also really good, considering I got in, but I never got to read it.
[ *] Interview: DIDN’T HAVE ONE. My dad (plme21maibe) was FREAKING out about me never being offered an interview… so for future year applicants: DON’T WORRRRRRRRY. It’s honestly not a big deal.
