I’ve worked with the Quaglia Institute of Student Aspirations to help better students’ education in secondary schools / make them appreciate them more, both in the US and in the UK. I guess I tried to play this up a bit because it sorta shows that I’m dedicated to my education, etc.

If someone could please help me figure out why the heck I wasn’t even deferred.

Wow so many deferrals. I am sorry :frowning: Congrats to those who got in!!!

I think it’s the fact that every applicant looked similar tbh

ACCEPTED! I’m not posting my full stats but I had a 29 ACT and 3.78 GPA. I wasn’t really counting on being deferred, let alone accepted. I am living proof that Brown looks at the applicant holistically and if you really put time and effort into your essays and short answers, you have a shot.

Congrats to all those who have been accepted as well! As for the Deferred/Rejected applicants, keep your heads up.

Decision: Accepted

BTW if any RD applicants need any help w/ their application, PM me.

[li] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I would say what is most unique thing about me is that I grew up in an all-white community in upstate NY (aka VT) then moved to a diverse place in CT. I thought I was Asian, but then realized I did not have much in common with the other “Asians” at my school (besides grades haha). It was a pretty mature and insightful essay IMO.[/li][/ul]

NEW QUESTION
Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application:my essay about Fringe and about Hospice, my letters of recommendation, and my well-roundedness

Congratulations to all that got in! I hope to join you all in the regular cycle

Accepted!!!

SAT I: 2240

Job/Work Experience: Organic Pizza place, Family Yoga Studio, Started Dog walking business when 12

Volunteer/Community service: NHS, Philabundance (food drive), TOMS

Summer Activities: Soccer, Internship at Center for Autism Research at Children’s Hospital, Work

Essays: CA- About “falling in love with my alarm clock” ie.waking up early and my journey in “awakening”. Activities one about working for TOMS.
Brown- About Best Buddies, my parents, and lastly about “Who am I” and answering it “I am Yellow”. All were very me and pretty risky. Wrote supplement about Physics and Philosophy concentration, wanting to work with Noetic Science.

Teacher Recommendation: Both knew me for me and not just a grade. One helped foster my writing ability and helped me through a hard time and the other had me for Philosophy where he learned about my views on life. Should be very heartfelt.

Counselor Rec: Known me since 5th grade, helped me through a rough time. Would go completely to bat for me.

Additional Rec: Club soccer coach. I wanted admissions to get a glimpse of just how much time I spent on soccer and how the energy I put there limited me from getting my own patent or being president of everything.

Interview: I thought it went really well. Had to take out my nose piercing though so she didn’t get the whole sense of who I am ;).

State: Pennsylvania (Philly area, not Amish country. I assure you I have electricity)
Country: USA
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: White (Italian/American duel citizen)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: small business owners (yoga studio), maybe 100k
Intended Concentration: Physics and Philosophy
Hooks: duel citizen (USA/Italy)

Reflection:
Strengths: My risks. My essays. Perhaps being the founder a of a club that appreciates shoes (TOMS to be specific)
Weaknesses: SATs. And I am sure many other things.
Why you think you were accepted:

“Brown-Ness”: I am completely random. I am an Italian soccer player who likes Latin and wants to major in Physics and Philosophy. My parents are yoga teachers and I wrote my essay about being “Yellow”. I am the President of a TOMS club that helps provide children with shoes. Really it came down to me being completely honest with who I am. Which is random.

General Comments: Because the universe works in mysterious ways. That is my honest truth. For future applicants: Look at my stats, read what I wrote, but don’t try to compare yourself to me. For it is YOU not me who will get into Brown. After being rejected from my top choices (including Brown) for soccer recruiting then tearing my ACL, I decided to stop letting everyone else tell me who I am and just do it myself. I have never been more myself than on my Brown application. And apparently, that is what they are looking for.

oh yeah also if anyone wants my input on PLME/Brown essays or any advice in general, I’d be more than happy to help. (pm me)

NEW QUESTION
[*] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: just the fact that i am an asian who loves classics, dislikes science and math, does lots of community volunteering, and has a witty, leaning towards sarcastic, voice.

@fabulousfaucet

I’m really happy for you.

But sorry, can you please not go around CC telling people that you are “living proof that Brown looks at the applicant holistically”? Because the overwhelming majority of posts on this thread point to the contrary. Please do not generate false hope for future applicants. Please do not make it seem as though your personal qualities merited your admission over those of whom were deferred.

I was deferred. I would not recommend that any rational person apply to Brown on the premise that it reviews applications holistically, because, in my humble opinion, Brown does not.

[] Teacher Recs:Great. Picked one teacher that I’ve had for 3 years that spends a ton of time on all of his recs and one that’s almost like a friend. Didn’t go for a science rec because english and latin teachers know you better just cause you talk more there

[] School Type: Small, non-religious private
[] Ethnicity: White and Jewish and Proud
[li] Gender: M [/li][/ul]Other Factors: College counselor and admit officer are becoming good friends, and he told me that Brown liked the essay. Said my laid back approach was what they liked. EC’s are good. Ton of leadership but nothing too unique (best was captain of Academic Team that finished well at Nationals and was on tv! High Q!, plus XC captain, track captain, trombone, Student government officer, Hillel pres, honor societies). Did an internship at Georgia tech research institute with storms, tutor low-income Vietnamese kids for community service
General Comments: Never thought I’d be making this post. Yeah my grades and scores are good on paper but I didn’t think that I was unique enough to stand out. It’s just work, alot of essay writing, and luck. Never should have stressed so much about trying to predict it. You’ll all find a niche. But if you’re deferred don’t procrastinate on your apps now because you’ll regret it even more later! Class of '17 woo!
