Don't give up if you got deferred. I know how you feel. After I got deferred from Brown, I was quite upset. Everyone told me, "I'm sorry. Brown doesn't take anyone that they defer." That made me feel great. I kept pushing my application though (send a letter right away saying that I still wanted to go to Brown, got all A's first semester in all of my classes, sent another rec). That's what you need to do if you want to get it; show them that you really want it! They accept ~10% of deferred students. It's not the same as the 16% overall acceptance, but it's still a fair amount. And you need to remember that the 16% included the ~25% of ED applicants accepted, so it's really lower in the RD pool than 16%. You still have a good shot! Don't give up!

P.S. - congats to those accepted! Brown is a truly amazing experience.

GPA - 3.8 UW/4.35W

EC's
Did research in a Stanford neurobiology lab w/ the best rec ever from the professor that I worked for.
President and co-founder of Model UN at my school
Tons of photography awards
4 years French Club and French honor society
4 years Interact Club
I had a lot of other stuff, but I'm forgetting

Before i start, i would like to congratulate all of you who got into brown ED. My deepest condolences to those who got deferred and rejected.

Well, I got deferred as well, and I'm not exactly sure why. Although my stats aren't amazing (like most people on CC...), most people are questioning why I did not get in.
Here are my stats:
I am 9/361 of my school, and my school has a really good reputation with school.
4.5 gpa
AP Chem, AP envisci, AP spanish, AP english, AP calc bc 2
(AP Bio-5, AP US-4)
1380 SAT (not that high i know)
Bio - 780, Math 2 C - 770, Writing - 720
I had 4 recs... two of which I know were amazing (I love my bio teacher) 3 of them were required and the other one came from the PhD professor I worked for over the summer
And my main extra curriculars/programs:
worked as student researcher at UMDNJ studied trypanosomes
attended a premedical honors program at UMDNJ as well
went to 3 weeks Brown summer program
swim team (all years varsity, captain this year)
Church (my whole life...), junior youth choir director, youth group/choir member
chinese school (my whole life...), VP of local ESL, Chinese Culture Club, student volunteer
Volunteer: helped senior citizens serve dinner, helped kids with mental disabilities swim, regular volunteer at the hospital (over 200 hours)
FBLA: board member, state winner in competitions
Etc. I think that states the main things

Anyways, number 15 got in in my class, but I didn't. It could be because of my SAT scores but I thought everything else might have made up for it. I am very disappointed (not to sound immature but I really am..) and upset. But I'm sort of feeling better thanks to my family and friends.

Regardless, Brown is still my first choice (I must admit). And I don't want to give up all hopes. Can anyone help me or rather advise me in what I can do to maximize my chances into getting in RD?

Oh and one more thing... the average SAT in the top 5% of my class is about 1480. I really just lack the ability to take SATs... but I didn't think that'd be a deciding factor.

hey, dont wanna be a pain, but anyone who got into PLME, could you post your stats? i wanted to apply PLME, but i was afraid they would just laugh at my stats :( (1340 SAT, 30 ACT, though everything else is good)...

jamesah1,
You mentioned that you had won a number of photography awards. My daughter has become quite involved in photography and would like to enter a few contests but is unsure where to begin. Any suggestions for her? Thanks so much.

Many of the awards that I won were through my school. My advice to her would be to enter as many contests as possible; that's what I did. It doesn't hurt to earn the experience even if she doesn't win.
