Official Brown ED Thread

Yes you are right. I should’ve realized that reality is not always fair. I wasn’t as angry last year when I knew that some people got into the colleges that they shouldn’t have deserved more than others who got rejected instead. I knew it wasn’t fair but I wasn’t as emotional as I was when I heard about Brown. I think it’s because I know these people personally and have worked with them so we are quite close when it comes to understanding their capability and whatnot. And it also has to do with Brown which I’ve always believed it’s one of the more unique schools out there. I liked it a lot and I still do. But when reality comes smacking me in the face, it is hard not to feel sentimental.

4 out of the 5 people I know who applied ED got accepted (including me). Then again, we’re all really quirky people (and have very strong academics as well).

Soooo many people at my school applied ED to Brown (compared to usual for my school - 6 plus at least one at an alternative public school in town), and I think they all would be great at Brown. I feel like the reason the deferral rate is so high is that Brown students - at least the people from my school applying - are fairly self-selected. They know that Brown does intelligent but well-rounded and possibly a bit quirky, and every one of them, I think, would’ve fit great. (This applies to me too). So I think the deferral rate is so high because there are SO many people who Brown knows would do great there…there just isn’t the room. I feel like deferral is used as an ED-form of GT.
I really am not seeing the trend in accepted vs deferred (at least from the postings here), which just confirms my belief that college admissions processes are crazy. But at least, to all of you out there who got deferred, we all know that this doesn’t make us stupid and not good enough. Right?

i totally agree with you MKT. i wish i knew what the percentage of deferred students who go on to be accepted is. deferral sucks because it’s not a rejection, but (to me anyway) it still sort of feels like one. now i’m debating whether brown would be the right place for me even if i did get in in march because it stings that they didn’t want me now ya know? does anyone else feel the same?
but MKT, one question-- what is GT?

Oh sorry, GT = Guaranteed Transfer. The thing, apart from waitlist, that you get if you’re good but not good enough. Pretty much.
I do feel like you that I was so sure it was the right place for me…but if they don’t want me then is it still the right place for me? I definitely feel like it’s just a “nice rejection” - when people hear I was deferred they congratulate me and I’m like ‘no, it’s just a way of letting me down nicely.’ …I’m guessing chances of getting in are very slim.

ACCEPTED. It seems completely random to me.

^ dammit, where are the mods. CC has been good about keeping these type of people out
