Official Brown Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

i feel you ^

3 weeks to go! I’m trying to tune out and focus on finals but it has not been easy.

Yeah, I keep logging in and checking this thread even when nothing’s been posted. Everyone ready for finals? Feeling the effects of transferitis?

@sakari I was like you but decided to stop for my well being’s sake haha.Didn’t have high hopes when i applied but one can’t help but to be hopeful: (On the other hand,have you received other offers?all the best for finals!

Hi,

Has anybody heard anything yet? I applied to Brown too, and have been impatiently waiting to get any kind of news or message from them. I got accepted to U Mich and U Miami, and have to pay a deposit by May 1st. I am confused and the admission office don’t release any information regarding my acceptance/rejection. So what do you guys think I should do? Pay the deposit or wait?

Thanks,

@Sleepy - Brown won’t release decisions until early/mid may. The wait sucks but what can you do. I’d choose between Mich/Miami and send one deposit in assuming Brown is your first choice. I’m in a similar boat w/a couple acceptances and sent one deposit in, registered for classes etc. Should Brown or one of my other two super reaches come through I’ll walk away from the deposit.

Thanks, but the sad part is i am poor :frowning: .Anyway, I want to study applied math in econ. Which one do you think is better U Miami or U Mich?

@sleepytransfer I too have yet to pay my deposit to Umich.nice to see a wolverine here

would think UMich

deff michigan if you’re gonna do math.

btw do you think if someone called the admission office they could give a day that they’re planning on releasing decisions?

@bumblebee
Yay go blue! :slight_smile: (only if brown says no)

@yolo
Yea, I just rejected U Miami. Though, I like to live there, but U Miami offered me a terrible financial aid package :(

Anyway, good luck to you all!

@mmb
Thanks.

To be honest I don’t know. I called them a couple of times and they told me to wait :frowning:

Thankfully, all of the colleges I applied to release decisions on or around May 15th. The dilemma of sending in a deposit when you’re still waiting to hear back from other colleges is a tough one–I definitely feel you on the financial front. However, think about it this way: the money you’re spending now is guaranteeing you a future where you’ll (most likely) be happier and more fulfilled.

I applied and got in as a transfer in 2012. I know I was a nerve wreck, so offering my time if anyone has any questions! Btw, I heard my decision in early June… much later than most ppl in CC

@dreamer305 what are/were your stats?

Any news? ? ?

^ yes Chris Paul hit clutch shot!

The following was posted by Entomom in an analogous thread for Brown 2011 admissions (I’m going to check for more data including 2012 admissions):

Link to previous thread (not sure if it will work): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/1107864-official-brown-2011-transfer-thread-11.html

Brown Transfer Applicant Survey - FA & need-aware admissions

Did not ask for FA:
5 accepted (83%)
1 accepted for spring (17%)
0 WL
0 denied

Initial admission rate (5 fall + 1 spring)/all = 6/6 = 100%
FInal admission rate (5 fall + 1 spring + 0 wl)/all = no change (100%)

Requested FA:
2 accepted (25%)
1 accepted for spring (12.5%)
1 WL then accepted (12.5%)
2 WL (25%)
2 denied (25%)

Initial admission rate (2 fall + 1 spring)/all = 3/8 = 37.5%
FInal admission rate (2 fall + 1 spring + 1 wl)/all = 4/8 = 50.0%

NuiNui here: KEEP IN MIND THE FOLLOWING

Sample size is clearly very small, thus the conclusions we can draw are not very strong.

Note that the acceptance rates for both categories were obviously much higher than reported by Brown. I think it’s reasonable to say those accepted were more inclined to respond to the thread at all, hence the upward skew. Again, the conclusion you can draw from these stats are obviously not very strong.

HOWEVER, small sample size etc. means this data is not acceptable for academic or professional studies and reports. It does not mean the data has absolutely no predictive power, or even that it isn’t 100% representative of CC admission stats for Brown taking FA into account. Not saying in any way it is 100% percent representative but hopefully you get my point.

So you all should take these statistics with a grain of salt. Recognize this data would be wholly unacceptable for any actual published academic or professional reports, but do not discount the data completely.

Best wishes

I titled my thread ‘Survey’ for a reason, it was never intended or inferred to be a study or report, no less a published one!

Also note the wording in the OP of my thread:

BTW, you’re dealing with a researcher of 25+ years who did publish in peer reviewed journals. So your belief that you need to provide caveats to the this information is totally unnecessary as it was presented as a summary of the data contributed to date, and that is exactly what it is.

I think you misunderstood the point of my post. I simply presented information and provided a disclaimer. I’m saying DO NOT look at this data as too legitimate, though i think it can be used pretty well predictively. Either way: Am I wrong? Could a survey of a couple dozen people be used in any reputable study? No. Though we on CC can certainly use it as a resource, which is what I’m advocating.

No need to cite your research experience to somebody who has simply relayed information exactly as it was presented in a thread (and then with a disclaimer) and even provided a link to the thread.

I stand by my post.
