[/ul]General Comments:

I wasn’t so much disappointed with not getting into Brown as I was being shut out of all the Ivies… I keep cycling between being angry that other, “less-qualified” people got in and being depressed and thinking that I got rejected because I wasn’t good enough.

But if I was being honest with myself, I know that as much as I liked the idea of being good enough to get in, I would have been really overwhelmed by the Open Curriculum and probably wouldn’t be very happy there. Although I was in love with its Cognitive Neuroscience program :’( Alas, it was not meant to be.

My advice to underclassmen reading these posts is EDUCATE YOURSELVES. I made the mistake of not thinking about college until the summer of my junior year and believing my parents (who are immigrants and know nothing about American colleges now that I think about it) when they said my grades could get me into college, no problem. Learn how to write an essay. Practice interviews… Don’t blow off PSATs or SATs. Start thinking about what you want to do for a career and make an effort to try those fields out in high school (Take language courses if you’re interested in language, intern at a hospital if you want to pursue medicine).

Congrats to everyone who got in. Rejection is compelling me to be awesome wherever I end up :P

General Comments: Brown is a school that understands that despite the apparent ease and convenience of doing so, quantifying intrinsically qualitative aspects of a person (or life) is impossible and inevitably leads to a poor assessment. Ergo, SAT scores and grades will not get you in, no matter how good your scores or grades are (this is not the case at the other Ivys). My supplements demonstrated interest, a clear voice present in my writing, and a genuine interest in the defining aspects of the university. My advice to applicants: if you don’t have that genuine interest in the university, and you have felt throughout high school that you’re doing everything in the hopes of impressing some Ivy League admissions officer, then you likely won’t be accepted here (it will absolutely show) and if you are, it seems even more unlikely that you’ll enjoy the atmosphere , which is its defining aspect, that permeates Brown. Good luck and do what you love.

General Comments:

I liked Brown. I applied ED and got deferred. It was then that I fell in love with UChicago and I say this with no sour grapes that had I been accepted everywhere and every college gave me the same amount of aid, I would choose UChicago. I did have somewhat of a sentimental attachment to Brown though, so this was somewhat disappointing. Ah well.

[] Summer Activities: Things I wanted to do! Volleyball and theatre mainly. Nothing noteworthy, just things I enjoyed.
[] Essays: I felt like they were pretty good. Writing is an area I’m stronger in; I didn’t have any help with them. No one edited but me. I wrote one about the canned food drive I coordinated, and one about an influence a homeless woman had on me. I think the last one was probably the most unique.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I assume it was decent. I have no way of knowing for sure.
[] Counselor Rec: I have no idea. I think she probably mentioned hoe loaded my courses are this year. I have the most packed schedule of any senior at my school.

[] Income Bracket: It’s complicated. Last year a combination of weird situations pushed my parents’ income to closer to $100,000 when it would normally be less than $60,000.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, First generation college
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I feel like my essays and supplement were really honest. I didn’t try to be really funny/weird or off the wall; I was honest. I used my own voice to tell my story. Nothing was artificial. I know some people try for really funny or interesting things, and I was worried my answers would be too vanilla, but I’m glad that they resulted in a valid representation of my personality. I didn’t try to be someone to impress the admissions department. I let them decide if they liked me as I was. Also, I feel like me extra curriculars are really varied. Threatre and volleyball and ready writing… I showed diverse interests.
[] Weaknesses: My scores and grades! They weren’t bad, but not even close to perfect. Also, my school maybe. It’s bad! My counselors don’t know anything. No one ever goes to ivies or even applies. I had no support in this process, and that could have hindered my application. I really doubted I would get in because there’s nothing spectacular about me. I feel exceptionally normal, and that works against most applicants.
[] Why you think you were accepted: I guess my personality really came through in my writing. I am passionate about so many things! I want someone to challenge my ideas, and I want to push those around me to strive for greatness. For some reason, Brown thought I was a good fit for them. I’m so excited!!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted: SMU, Baylor, McCombs at UT. Waitlisted at Rhodes (as I should have been, because of a lack of interest)

[/ul]General Comments:

I’m not the typical person someone imagines when they think of the ivy league. For future applicants who come from small towns where most people don’t even go to college: you’re environment does not define you! If you want it; go for it. My scores aren’t fabulous; I’ve made a “B” before, and I still got in. I really think the most important thing you can do is be genuine. Put your time into the things you love, and become a person you would want to be around. Then, even if you aren’t accepted you won’t have any regrets.

General Comments:
Meh. I’ll probably get a lot of hate on this thread for this, but I honestly think Brown’s the most overrated of the Ivy Leagues anyway.
Guess it’s Williams vs. Dartmouth for me!

I rather think it’s the most underrated – and I like it that way! The prestige hounds go elsewhere while the self-driven hard workers unwilling to “drink the Kool-Aid” love the place; I don’t know of any other elite school that takes such pleasure in mocking itself.

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NM Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction, QuestBridge Finalist
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Club swimming (9 years), Varsity swimming (4 years; MVP 11th, Captain 12th), taught myself how to program iPhone apps (3-4 years, CEO of my own app development company, published 3 apps on the app store and working for the Everglades Foundation on one for them right now)[/li][] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: ~100 hours
[] Summer Activities: Lots of swimming and programming
[] Essays: EXTREMELY Brown-ish. Common app was all about my “inner confidence” and overcoming my money-less background; very general but also pretty powerful. Brown supplement was similarly independent- and self-motivated-sounding. I really think I knocked this supplement out of the park.
[] Teacher Recommendation: 1 great one, 1 (probably–I didn’t see it) fair one
[] Counselor Rec: She barely knows me. I wrote it for her lol.
[] Additional Rec: Should have sent one to my colleges from a coach or something. Really disappointed about how things worked out.
[li] Interview: It went pretty well. My interviewer was very impressed with me… but then again so were all my other interviewers and their schools unanimously rejected me…
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Florida
[] School Type: Public magnet: really a terrible school with only a handful of great teachers.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: QuestBridge range
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I thought being a QB finalist would help… that’s awkward…

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores (for my school, they’re practically unheard of), personality (really came through in my essays)
[] Weaknesses: personality (really came through in my essays… apparently if you vaguely write about overcoming the “system” you will be rejected by every school except Brown)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The school I came from. The private school and “better” public school nearby get plenty of students into MULTIPLE top colleges. As far as I know, I was the only one from my school, and I only got into Brown. Or maybe it’s some strange cosmic force. Either way, I’m kind of bitter.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Brown, UM (honors), Union (Schenectady; Union Scholar); Waitlisted: WUSTL, Northwestern; Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, MIT, Stanford, Tufts

[/ul]General Comments: I’m somewhat happy about Brown, although it was never a top choice for me. I had my hopes set on other schools, but I guess I screwed up somewhere big. I’m really disappointed.

[] Strengths: My application really pushed my interests in music and computer science, including a computer music-synthesis program and several recordings of my compositions. I also focused on my travels during middle school, which included two six-month-long cross-country excursions.
[] Weaknesses: My grades and extra curricular are average, nothing more or less. Also, I don’t really have any special awards or distinctions to set me apart from the masses.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My interview went extremely well. The alumnus had children in my school and really wanted to see someone from the high school go to Brown. We connected very well, and I believe that interview tipped the odds in my favor.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected from Yale, Cornell, Stanford, and MIT
Waitlisted at Carnegie-Mellon and Olin (eventually rejected)
Accepted at Pitt, RPI, and Lehigh

[/ul]General Comments:
I’d highly recommend future applicants to apply to numerous reach schools. Each school is looking for a different applicant. Also, make sure to do an interview if available! To everyone rejected and waitlisted, don’t beat yourself up over it. College admissions are 25% skill, 25% spin, and 50% luck. Congrats to all!
