Official Brown University 2018 ED Results

deferred, congrats to those who got in

don’t feel like doing a bracket, but: good grades, good SAT scores, leadership in variety of arts-related activities in and outside of school, national writing awards, national Spanish awards, a lot of original components of application, spent a ton of time making essays personal, lots of musical elements, incredible interview

and the waiting period begins, again.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2340 w/ 740 math
[] SAT II: 730 Lit, 760 US
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.79 (oops)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn’t rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5s on Physics B, US, Lang/Comp, Chem; 4s on Music Theory, Studio Art; 3 on Music Theory (5 non-aural, 2 aural (woo tonedeafness!))
[] Senior Year Course Load: 6 APs, Econ, Literature of Social Criticism
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, random ones from clubs and art (not major…)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): EiC of school paper, published in Huff Post Teen, Lawyer on Mock Trial, Bass guitar in a few school groups, lots of art (mostly on own), Volunteer w/ a political group, Planned Parenthood, local art gallery, 4 other school clubs (VP of 2)[/li][] Job/Work Experience: oops
[] Volunteer/Community service: “Volunteer w/ a political group, Planned Parenthood, local art gallery”
[] Summer Activities: ^
[] Essays: V proud of Common App, about how I’m not afraid to try new things even if it means I might fail, connected to art (which seems Brown-like); Supps were fine but not outstanding
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read. One from US History teacher was probably a little above avg; one from 10th and 12th grade Lit teacher probably a little below avg (not that it was bad, but this is Brown…). Just guessing though.
[] Counselor Rec: no idea
[] Additional Rec: Didn’t read, from Mock Trial coach
[li] Interview: Pretty good, not life changing or anything
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NY
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: pretty well-off
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: I’d like to say extracurrics, Common App essay, “intellectual curiosity,” but those things are all so subjective so who knows
[] Weaknesses: GPA (damn A-s!)
[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: GPA, nothing that made me stand out

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2170 (700 Math, 750 CR, 720 W)
[] ACT:
[] SAT II: 670 Math I (horrible I know… I took it a day after a car accident), 690 Lit
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.11
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): we don’t rank but i have the 2nd highest GPA
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: All IB Courses… HL Art, Bio, English // SL French, History, Math
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): lots of them. like a lot. the main ones were art-related. i have one of my paintings up at Oxford University and i started my own club to sell bracelets for human trafficking victims. i’m hosting a benefit concert later this year! also president of band and i play upright bass. editor in chief of yearbook.[/li][] Job/Work Experience: i’ve been working as a commissioned portrait painter since the age of 15. i have also been contracted for $2000 to design an iphone game
[] Volunteer/Community service: a lot, pretty much
[] Summer Activities: girl’s state, study abroad at oxford, toured europe to play bass for charity, medical mission in philippines
[] Essays: AMAZING. like literally my counselor said that it was the best she’s ever read. she sent my CommonApp essay off to be reviewed by the Fiske Guide to Colleges (or something like that) in order to be published
[] Teacher Recommendations: i assume they were really good… i’m great friends with my teachers and i have had some of them as teachers for all 4 years
[] Counselor Rec: pretty good, kinda cute and quirky i think. she said that i “cured cancer”, but with art
[] Additional Rec: my band teacher. i didn’t get to read them, but he’s seriously my favorite teacher and i’ve grown so much in that class… i assume it was superb
[li] Interview: lasted for an hour. it was good, he told me i was “made for Brown”
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): AZ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: private (small… less than 100 kids in my whole school)
[] Ethnicity: filipino
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: my parents are doctors
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nothing, except my art
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ESSAYS! i had stellar extracurriculars as well. also my art portfolio and GPA
[] Weaknesses: my SATS. SAT IIs were pretty horrible. like, really horrible. also i made two typos in my art portfolio when i was explaining the significance behind each of my pieces
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: (see strengths) it’s a holistic process. SATs do not make or break you. you just have to have a good heart… and i know that sounds corny. but you just have to write with your heart.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: okay, i only did this because i know a lot… A LOT of you will be perusing this forum in hopes of seeing what your chances are. i know, because i did the same for months on end. and because of College Confidential, i did not get my hopes up. i knew my SAT scores weren’t good… in fact they were pretty awful… and for that, i though that i was going to surely be rejected. i don’t like College Confidential and i don’t like to post here, but i only made this post in order to give you guys hope. because seriously, anything can happen. if i got in, then you can too (if you write from the heart… i cannot stress this enough!). just submit an application, you seriously never know what will happen

Don’t wanna fill out the big thing until I get a firm yes or no.

  • [] 1970 SAT (700 CR 600 M 670 W)
    [] 30 ACT
    [] 3.67 GPA (4.2ish W)
    [] 62ish/455

Leadership includes loads and loads of band. Brass captain, section leader, soloist, 1st/primary chair in basically everything since sophomore year, All-County, All-State, Tri-State, lots of Superiors at District and State Solo & Ensemble Assessment.
Some of you may be shocked by my incredibly low test scores/GPA/rank, but I truly believe the reason I was deferred instead of outright rejected was because of my extensive musical background and the fact that I am damn good at writing. My essays were absolutely gorgeous.

To be honest, I expected the deferral. I’m not surprised in the least. All I can do is email them and tell them I’m still interested and hope for the best. Congrats to y’all that got in!!

[]Weaknesses: poor grades, mediocre extracurriculars, sub-par human
[]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: They want the best and brightest students. I’m not one of them.
[li]Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: How do I know? It’s only December.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
As far as I’m concerned, I’m rejected already. The odds of getting a different outcome in RD are nonexistent. Looking back, I regret spending $75 on this app. I should have done more research on the stats of accepted applicants, and realized early on that it would’ve been smart to just save the app fee.

If I actually get accepted in RD, I don’t think I’d want to go to Brown. Brown doesn’t think I can succeed at their school, so I’d feel like an impostor if I go. IMO, I will feel embarrassed and ashamed if they actually accept me in the 2nd round.

-well admission is a comprehensive and complicated process, but if I can think a possible factor, it may be my grades: I haven’t had significant progress in last three years. More like consistent. Or, maybe the fact that I am an international student who applied for financial aid might have acted against me.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: uh…who knows. weird system. international competition.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: got to fill out other apps now.

[/ul]General Comments: going to be positive about this. at least i was not rejected. deferred means Brown would like to see my application again, so at least i didn’t bomb everything. disappointed, but life is long, gotta move on. congrats to everyone who got accepted, and for those who didn’t, I’ve talked to you guys before, you’re all seriously amazing people, and it is brown’s loss. we’ll all look back on this day and scoff at how ridiculously childish and trivial we were about this. not a big deal at all.

To future applicants: apply if you think you have a chance. if you’re accepted, you’re extremely lucky. everyone else who got deferred- it does not mean you weren’t good enough. just imagine everyone trying to squeeze through that tiny door. some people are going to get pushed aside, it’s inevitable. but we’ve got to stand up again and face our futures. don’t let this day bog you down, but instead embrace that you’ve experienced a taste of failure (perhaps for the first time of our lives, for many of us), and think about happy things, like christmas carols! I really do love all of you.

Peace out.

[] Essays: Spent a lot of time on my essays, probably revised them at least 10 times before I submitted them. I knew those were what would be the deciding factor because of my grades and scores. 9/10
[] Teacher Recommendation: Not sure what they wrote but I’m guessing they were good things lol. They’re all great teachers. 8/10
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor is amazing and basically wonder woman because she is the counselor for the entire school. Her rec was tremendous 8/10
[] Additional Rec: Had both of the docs I work for write LOR’s and the mom got a letter back from Brown thanking her for writing a LOR. 9/10

[/ul]Reflection:[ul]
[] Strengths: Definitely my essays and additional recommendations were my strengths. I knew those would be the deciding factors in my case because my numbers were not where some of other applicants were. So I really focused in on those aspects.
[] Weaknesses: Scores and GPA were not stellar
[] Why do you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was accepted due to my essays and I was just myself with them. I didn’t try to make them super formal I just answered the questions and added my own flair to them. I also think my visit to campus helped me really specialize my essays to Brown and not just make them the same generic (your school is great and has a beautiful campus).
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No where I didn’t want to apply anywhere else until I knew because well applications aren’t that expensive.

[/ul]General Comments: So I wasn’t going to post here because well I didn’t really have the time, but I decided to because I know I was freaking out like crazy and kept checking old CC forums and basically chancing myself and knowing I was going to get deferred. What I want to tell everyone is, is that it is not over for those of you who got accepted/rejected. You guys are more than qualified for other schools and you can still get in to Brown! And for those of you who are Brown hopefuls, do not stress about the scores and GPA. I just knew I wasn’t going to get in because my scores were so much lower than most people’s. You also don’t have to be able to cure cancer at 17. As long as you do the little stuff like volunteer and shadow someone in your area who is in the career that you’re hoping to one day pursue. What I’ve learned from this whole process is that people are willing to help you in any way they can. Let them help you! And to those of you who were accepted, see you in the fall :)

Whoops meant anyone who got deferred/rejected in my previous post

Reflection:
Strengths: I think I’m a great fit for Brown and that was reflected in my essays, recommendations, and interview.
Weaknesses: Obviously my scores are very weak, but I think the thing that hurt me the most was my class rank. Damn my school for ranking its students.
Why you think you were deferred: My stats likely held me back a ton, but I think the admissions committee saw that I was a very good fit for Brown; thus, they were conflicted and resorted to deferring me.

General Comments:
Sucks to suck for me. This is what I anticipated though. I think I’ll get rejected in the spring, but only time will tell. I’m definitely going to retake the SAT in an attempt to raise my reading and writing scores. Congrats to all who were accepted and good luck to all who, like me, were deferred. For those who were rejected, pick your head up. It’s just one school.
