rafafarmar: that sucks.

I have trouble understanding why someone with stats in the top 1% in the country, and in the top 5-10% of the application pool to Cal Poly Engineering wouldn’t be accepted ED… It would be one thing if the decision were based on Essay, Letters of Rec, ECs, etc, but from what I undertand, it’s pretty much just SAT/GPA and/or Class Rank, and a little of the # of hours involvement in ECs, evaluated within each Department/Major. There is also a slight advantage given to appliants from Cal Poly’s “serving area”, whatever that is.

There was a pretty disturbing (to me) post about a year or two ago about whether the Cal Poly computer algorythm used in Admissions for ED actually rejects “over-statted” applicants with the assumption (on the part of the humans who programmed the algorythm) that such top 1-2% statted students would have no trouble getting into Berkely, UCLA, etc., and why waste the ED slot for such an applicant. In essence, the programmers of the algorythm think they’re “protecting” the applicant from him or her self.

In other areas of college admissions, this is commonly referred to as the “Tufts Syndrome”. Whether it exists in the Cal Poly computer algorythm I don’t know, but the possibility does exist from the one poster who said he saw the algorythm from on of the computer Dept. students who helped write it a few years back.

rafafarmar: Best of luck to you. I agree, it is really hard to understand how this can happen.

I hope this is true! Im keeping my hopes high too

So glad. Hope it works out!

rafafarmar – My kid applied regular decision in 2011 with very similar stats and got into ME no problem. You’ve got a strong chance then. I am astounded as well.
