OFFICIAL CAL POLY SLO 2013-2014 Early Decision

Goldenwest, impacted doesn’t mean impossible! But for us it means she is going to be sure and apply to some of those non-impacted schools too. My D definitely wants to major in kinesiology, and is pretty sure she wants to stay in CA, although she’s applying to a few OOS colleges as well.

Thanks for the encouragement and good luck to your daughter, luckymom! We are also CA residents; will just have to see what happens!

So I sent in my sat scores through collegeboard a couple of days ago will they reach cal poly in time??

Kaplogy, I’m going to assume that you’re fine, but that’s primarily because my D also just sent in her scores yesterday. I just posted on another thread that after she submitted her application she realized she’s left off her Honors Pre-Calc class. She was able to make the correction to her application (at [Application Changes - Admissions - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions)) and the site says that any changes to an ED application must be received by November 15th. So I assume that means they will not be reviewing applications until at least November 15th, which will give our test scores plenty of time to arrive.

The extra year of English is a difficult extra course to meet since schools require 4 years of English and many don’t know of the extra course criteria for CP until their senior year.

We are hoping that the “G” elective class of Journalism since it is classified as an English subject on the doorways website for my S HS and CSU list will count. Obtaining these “extra” admission points is so important for CP. We have heard various students with high GPA and test scores not getting into CP last year and I know wonder if they didn’t receive the extra admission points from their courseload.

cpmom2 so true…there is at least one poster who had his kiddos take a college course, and/or take an AP English exam without having taken the course, which met the requirement for the extra English class. But he and his kiddos had been targeted CP SLO earlier in high school and had researched the requirements much sooner than we did! At this point, the application is in and we’re hoping for the best. Good luck!

This is about trying to get credit for having taken 10 semesters of English. It is an interesting idea to take an AP English test for an AP class the student hasn’t taken! I like this idea, but when reviewing the application, don’t see how the resultant AP score could be reflected at the time of application since CP doesn’t take AP scores with the application. Where on the application would one show the AP score? Thanks for any insight!

“If you have taken both an AP exam and an AP course in the same subject, please report only the AP course and course grades on this application.”

“If you have not completed all of the required number of subject matter course units in one of the following subject requirement areas: history/social science; English; science; visual arts or college prep electives, but you have taken a subject area related AP test and have received a score of three (3) or better, you may enter the test for course credit in the appropriate area. Select the institution you attended when the test was taken. Select the grade level and year the test was taken. Select the course title, “Other” and enter “AP Exam” and the exam name in the course title field. Example: “AP Exam Biology”. Select the Semester term type. You may enter a maximum of two (2) semesters of credit and select ‘Pass’ for each grade.”

“In order to provide you with proper credit toward your degree for Advanced Placement exams, the CSU campus must receive an official test score report from the College Board.”

From the CSU Mentor instructions p. 13 found here: http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/freshmaninstructions.pdf

You can do the same thing with SAT subject tests. See pages 14-15 of the same document.

intended major: industrial engineering
sat: 610+630 first time, 650+610 second time
act: 31 (E:34, M:29, R:32, S:30)
gpa: 3.92 weighted, but its like an 3.8 something for the cal state gpa?

I have taken 5 ap tests (passed them all) with 2 more to go, but they are all related to liberal arts…I only took one science (bio, 3) and then ap comp was a 4. would this hurt me?
I have taken 5 years of math in order to catch up, but am currently in only regular calculus…:frowning:
Varsity cross country and track all years of high school, currently taking 7 classes including a sport
Also I am a girl does that help at all? I heard that they are more lenient towards accepting girls because there aren’t a lot of females in engineering, but please correct me if I am wrong.
I saw tigerash’s stats and since they are going for the same major so I am really scared…but this is my first choice school, I attended their High School Shadowing program and fell in love with it even more, I would be devastated if they rejected me. :frowning:
Can anyone tell me my chance of getting in please?
Thank you for your time for reading such a long post, it is greatly appreciated. :)

Also good luck to everyone who applied or is applying ED, I wish you all the best! :D

@luckymom22 Thanks so much for the clarification and whew glad she was able to change it :)

@mochilime

You were at their high school shadowing event!? Me TOO!!! lol maybe we even met each other :slight_smile: Anyways I think that your stats are high I’d say you have a 60/40 chance ;)

@Ralph4
Thank you so much for answering so quickly! I wonder though since it says “if you have not completed all of the REQUIRED number…” does that mean if the student will have taken 8 semesters of English by the end of 12th grade, that they do not wish for a student in this category to report an AP score for an AP English class they did not take? CP does desire 10 semesters, but only requires 8. Were you in the situation where your child had taken 8 semesters of English, plus passed an AP test for a class they didn’t take, and then your student was able to obtain credit for 10 semesters of English? Thanks!

@kaplogy

Thank you for such a quick reply! Thank you for believing in me I’m stressing out less now =w=
Maybe I did meet you! :open_mouth: I did not see any of your stats for Computer Science, did you post any on this thread?

@Momtwogirls,
We wondered the same thing, but figured it was worth a try. Both were admitted, but CP doesn’t tell you how many bonus points they actually awarded you. One of my kids had completed 3 regular HS English courses and passed both the AP English Lang and AP English Lit exams. The other took 4 years of HS English and also passed the AP Engl Lang exam. Neither took any AP English courses.

One of them also took AP Chem class, but made a grade of “D” which is not sufficient to count as a year of lab science. So instead of reporting the class, he reported the AP Chem exam (he scored a “4”) on his application. When his HS transcript was reviewed, his conditional acceptance went into “review”. A few days later, we assume when his AP Chem exam score was verified, his acceptance changed from “in review” to official.

He had the required amount of lab science without AP Chem, but we were hoping for the bonus points, so reported the AP Chem exam. I guess we will never know if he was actually awarded the bonus points.

@ralph4, does this apply for first semester senior year too? for example if one gets a C in his first semester senior year and couple A’s/B’s, is it a serious issue for Cal Poly if you’re doing either ED? i was just wondering, because i’m struggling in a subject right now haha

@tigerash, Senior year grades are not considered in CP admissions decisions (ED or RD). The only requirement is that you pass (with a grade of C or better) all courses you listed on CSU Mentor as “in progress” or “planned”. I’ve never heard of anyone who had been conditionally accepted being revoked because of senior year grades unless they had D’s or F’s on their final HS transcript.

Good luck, and don’t let senioritis get out of control!

haha i promise not to!! thanks!

@ralph4
Thank you for answering yet again. You are a wealth of wisdom and reasoning!

@mochilime

lol I thought I did… somewhere…

well anyways here it is again:

gpa: 3.95
5 Aps 8 including senior year
SAT: 1320/1600 (retook it)

Hello im current freshman at Cal Poly and i applied early decision last year. Ill try and answer some questions and calm some of the nerves. A few things about me…
I am an Aerospace Engineering Major, with my high school stats being GPA:4.2 weighted and SAT of 1980. THe classes i took werent very impressive haha, i took 2 AP classes every year, Math and either History or english. I took a total of only 4 english classes, which counted as only 8 semesters. I also took 3 years of language. I did a sport all four years, and had work experience.
Honestly, i was just like you guys, really unsure whether or not i was gonna get accepted. I think applying early decision did help a little, and i applied early because i knew this was where i wanted to go, and i also heard there was a better chance. I was accepted, while some of my friends who had the same stats (or even better) who also applied for the same major didnt get in…so really dont let other peoples stats get your self esteem down at all, anything is possible! but yeah hopefully this helped a little, if you need any answers to questions, ill try my best to answer them.
