Hi Rowdart,

Congratulations! I hope your year is off to a good start. I’m curious—the friends of your in the same major who did not get accepted, did they apply early decision too? Or had they applied regular decision? We applied ED hoping it would increase my Ds chances of getting in, even if only a little! Thanks.

They applied regular decision, so it could be possible early decision does give some small advantage…and also, applying early allows you to find out months before everyone else which is a major stress-reliever. Good Luck to your daughter! Cal Poly is an amazing school!

Rowdart,
Do you know any freshman mechanical engineering stats? Please include people you know who got accepted and rejected. Thanks.

i know my friend who got accepted into mechanical had a 4.0 weighted GPA and a 30 ACT score…as for people who were rejected, i dont know anyone personally.

Anyone applying for Biomedical Engineering?

@rowdart, what are some of the harder and easier engineering majors to be admitted into?

there are some engineering majors that are harder to get into because 1. cal poly has really good programs and 2. due to the actual size that is accepted…the harder ones would probably be aerospace, architectural and maybe computer…the “easier” ones would probably be materials (its a small program but not too many apply here), industrial, and mechanical ( i say mechanical because it is a very large group) but yeah, and then all the rest would be in the middle. but looking at the majors this way isnt always reliable when choosing a major.

I posted earlier how my D forgot to put her Honors Pre-Calc class on her application and submitted the online form requesting that it be changed. She has already received an email from someone in admissions to let her know the class has been added to her application. She also received her email to set up her portal. That was quick!

S applied ED BioMed :)

WGPA 4.28 (Cal Poly)
UnGPA 3.98
ACT Math 34 ACT Eng 33 Reading 34 Science 33

8 AP courses at grad: Engl Lang, Eng Lit, Spanish, Macro Econ, Chem and Calc BC

No work exp
Extra curriculars with leadership

so exited for him

oops… guess I can’t count

6 AP with 2 additional weighted classes

I applied the second day applications opened, but here is my post.

Major: Computer Engineering
CSU GPA: 3.75
HS Weighted: 3.98
UW: 3.65

AP Courses:
AP Physics B (score of 3), AP English Language and Composition (score of 3), AP US History (score of 3), AP English Literature and Composition (taking this year).

College courses:
Computer Studies 10: Intro to Programming (current), Computer Studies 11: Data and Algorithms (2nd semester).

ACT:
28 Composite, 28 Math, 32 English, 28 Reading, 25 Science. Writing - 9
27 Composite, 29 Math, 32 English, 23 Reading, 25 Science. Writing - 7

What are my chances with Early Decision? I’m honestly pretty nervous seeing other people’s statistics on this site, and I want an honest opinion.

Your stats are very similar to my S Except his major is micro biology. I would be curious to see what others have to say about your chances. Good Luck I know 45 days can feel like a lifetime

codelunatic, my son is a second year Computer Science major who was accepted, last year RD, with a 4.1 CSU weighted and 32 composite ACT. Forget how many APs but 6-8. I’d try to schedule another ACT and get it up to 30+. There are other threads here on CC that show the incoming stats for the past couple years.

My gut feeling is that going ED this year would be a good decision if you’re sure CP is for you, because you’re on the borderline right now. The 2013 incoming class was waaaay over what was expected. 1000+ more acceptances than expected for RD. So I think next year’s class will be paired back quite a bit. And going ED tells CP that you plan to attend. I would think it would help their capacity planning. Just my 2-cents.

Cal Poly’s plans are to increase overall enrollment (eventually) to about 24,000. They expect to grow 1 percent to 2 percent a year, adding the equivalent of about 200 full-time students a year.

@MLM wow is that true?? Does that mean they’ll be accepting more people in general?? Gives me a bit of hope :)

@mochilime

Thank you so much :’)

SLO and it’s plan to increase enrollment are mentioned in this article and video (and there are other articles on line).

MLM, I wouldn’t dispute that SLO wants to add enrollment. The article you posted states 4000-5000 by 2022. The current problem is a lack of housing. Many second and third years were displaced this year because of the over-acceptance rate. As a result, a complete Poly Canyon building was assigned to first years. One would hope that by 2022, the housing situation would be addressed.

@jamestg - SLO has plans for additional new housing.
