not necessarily that they reject overqualified in-state students, but that there is a trend that they get rejected from SLO and then accepted at UCLA and UCB. They are all excellent schools, and you do have the benefit of the essays with the UCs…
@ucladeb thank you! good luck to your daughter, I hope she gets in everywhere she applies!
@mlegoldstein Yes people do get denied from SLO but accepted to top UC’s. Don’t get too upset, UC’s are still better than a state school. There is no such thing as overqualified either.
@joogman23 Oh, I’m not upset! I was kind of expecting it. Kids from my school typically do better with UC’s than with SLO, so now I’m just waiting until March.
Why are UCs better than SLO? If you got into SLO and UC Davis for either microbiology or agriculture , which would you choose?
I am trying to decide between SLO and UC Davis for Animal Science (if I got into both). I think I would choose SLO over Davis because of its “Learn-by-Doing” approach to everything; they get you started in your major right away, instead of making you go through all the GE requirements the first two years, and THEN get to your classes for your major. And SLO is by the beach @iluvducks
All UCs are national research universities. Cal Poly is a regional university - albeit one with an excellent reputation. Some would argue with this, but I work at a UC, and this is the general view here.
@iluvducks personally, I think they’re about the same tier academically, but I like SLO’s campus and atmosphere MUCH more than Davis’s, so I’d chose SLO. But, at that point it’s personal preference to minor details.
If you are planning on working in the SLO/SB County areas, CPSLO is a great choice, as it is well known locally, and has a great rep here. This begins to diminish rapidly once you get farther from these areas.
I just got in as a food science major. Yay! Out of State with 28 ACT, 4.14 Unweighted GPA (4.10 weighted) President of a club, 3 AP classes, 101 service hours. Good luck everyone!
I know there are a few of you that are anxious to hear if they are notifying Engineering applicants. My S just received his acceptance for Mechanical Engineering. We are OOS. He had a 4.62 W GPA and 3.86 UW. 32 ACT Comp (33 E, 34M), 6 APs and plenty of ECs. Good luck to everyone.
@cagirlinal what college is food science in?
Son got accepted to aerospace. OOS, 4+GPA, 32 ACT, 3 APs and lots of honors classes. Very happy, as is his engineering G’Pa (first of many grandkids to go into engineering).
With regards to the above discussion on UCs vs state schools, the major really matters, and whether you’re pursuing undergrad or graduate work. I’d rather my kid do undergrad engineering at CalPoly and save UCB for grad school.
Also, for what it’s worth, my dad had an ee and nuclear e career all over the country and internationally, and tells me that Cal Poly engineering grads are highly regarded everywhere (he is not a Cal Poly grad, but did study nuclear eng at Berkeley).
Thanks to all the posters- this thread has been educational.
College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences
Food science is in College of Agriculture. Does this mean In-state agriculture majors will hear soon? I’m in-state Nutrition
so many applicants apply to SLO without knowing the actual environment and just based on academics. you need to understand that you will be spending the next four years there. It’s not for everyone, it’s somewhat secluded from everything except for the beach. the beach is about 10 minutes. If you are used to a mall and a bigger area like the Bay Area for example or San Diego city, you will not like SLO. This is just my opinion though.
As for Davis vs SLO, I would choose Davis. Davis has a big fun college community and is completely safe. Great whether and is highly regarded because it’s close to the Bay Area and Sacramento city. Bay area pay is increasing as well, if you can see your self working in the Bay Area, I would choose Davis. If you go to SLO or Davis, you will still need to take GE’s no matter what. Davis is known Nationwide, its on the national ranking. SLO is on the regional ranking. This is just my opinion though, everyone is different.
Also, Animal Science? UC Davis has THEE best Vet program in CA which is also highly selective. UC Davis lives and breathes Animal Science. Do your research.
I am shocked that we heard today - was not expecting it. So excited!!! Good luck!
Thank you! Congratulations on getting accepted!
Im OOS for Software Engineering and havent got a decision yet on my portal, does that mean I most likely got rejected?
I have done my research; I actually have wanted to go to Davis my entire life to attend both Undergrad and vet school. it was up until I toured CPSLO last spring that I wanted to go to Davis; now, both of the schools are my number ones. @joogman23 please don’t assume I haven’t done my research.
