**OFFICIAL CAL POLY SLO CLASS of 2019 Regular Decision** Thread

I’m an ag communications major. Has anyone with an ag major heard back yet?

@muhnigmofo‌, they don’t. CP doesn’t use SAT II or AP in the admissions algorithm. Well, that’s not completely true. Having taken an AP course does count in the GPA calculation and in rare cases admissions will let SAT II scores count as additional college prep course work. I don’t know the specifics of how the latter works.

Does Cal Poly still prefer ACT over SAT? And if so, does that mean kids who only took SAT are at a disadvantage?

Can anyone explain the advantages to Cal Poly’s system of application assessment? It seems very ‘narrow minded’ compared to something like the common app. For instance I had a life threatening condition that affected school, but any CSU will never know. Even the fact that they don’t ask anything about EC’s besides a box for leadership positions seems a bit absurd.

The suspense and speculations going back and forth on this thread have been stressful. The reality is that if everyone applied broadly–to reach schools and safety schools, everyone will be attending a college next fall. Stellar students who do not get into their dream school will shine and be stellar at another school. Not so stellar students who get in because of algorithm shenanigans will have a chance to prove themselves and step up to the plate. No matter what, by Winter’s end everyone will making plans to start college next fall. Good luck to everyone.

How the whole thing works for international students? My D is applying for Economics (quant). A (4 GPA WES evaluation). Finishing the high school in Canada.

@sbjdorlo‌, they say they prefer ACT, but it makes no difference. They convert straight across.

@Colanzio5‌, Poly does it the way they do because it lends itself to a numerical ranking. They do it that way because they don’t have the state funds to do it holistically. They do give special consideration to some disadvantages, like attending certain schools or having parents with little education, but there are so many situations that aren’t taken into account that it is unfortunate. I guess in the end it is to keep it objective and less expensive. How do you choose between three equal candidates, one who survived severe depression, one whose father is in Iraq and one whose mother has cancer. I guess CP does it by not doing it. They simply let the numbers decide.

If they are only looking at the ACT Math and English scores how are they calculating it? Are they averaging these two scores and not looking at the composite score? Curious on what figure would be presented.

Averaging to the whole number. Not sure if they round up or down.

Thank you for replying. Very helpful. Hopefully they round up!

Hi guys! I just got accepted a couple of days ago for microbiology I’m from instate and I wanted to know how good Cal Poly’a microbiology program is? If I can’t get into UCLA, I was looking towards UCI or UCSD for microbiology. How does Cal Poly’s microbiology program compare?

@sbjdorlo - My daughter never took the ACT and she got in last year. Good luck to your student!

@kmwhms‌ let me know as soon as your portal updates! Havent seen any other ag majors. :frowning:

@leandraduke‌ I think I saw an OOS Ag. major earlier in this thread, but I’m in the same boat as you anxiously waiting for the ag decisions to be posted. Are you in-state or OOS?

@leandraduke‌ I definitely will let you know; you let me know if yours updates as well!

Accepted OOS!
Major: Materials Engineering
SAT: 2180
4.8 gpa
yay! I’m glad I checked CC or else I wouldn’t have looked at the portal today lol!

@cassidychamplin‌ im an ag major, and I still haven’t heard back, jusr checked this morning

Once again, they do not release decisions on weekends. Tomorrow it begins.

@kayceecakess‌, Just as we want schools to judge kids holistically for admission, we too should look at each school holistically. A school that ranks at the top nationally is not necessarily the best school for you or for your major. U.S. News releases an annual school ranking by school overall and by major. For example Cal Poly ranks at #7 in the nation for engineering (for schools that don’t offer a PhD. USC ranks high for engineering (for schools that offer a PhD) but we would choose SLO over USC due to the more agreeable area. SLO is beautiful.

People choose different schools for different reasons. Can’t we just leave it at that?
