[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Very surprised I got in. I honestly think that the essays are what play a major role in the admissions process.[/ul]

My S is a freshman at Caltech and the EA accepted/deferred/rejected submissions on this board last year were very similar to those I have seen so far this year. It may come as a surprise to many that some people who look really good on paper here did not get in, while some people who do not look nearly so good did get in. From this you might think that the Caltech admissions process is capricious. But what I think this really shows is that you have to read each application in its entirety to get a real feel for why some people got in, others were deferred, and still others rejected. This, of course, is exactly what the admissions people do. The rough sketches you find on this thread are only a very poor substitute.

Deferred

Stats:[ul]
[]SAT: 2340
[]SAT II: Math 2-800 Physics 800
[]GPA: 3.82 UW, 5.06 W

[/ul]Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: I thought they were really good at the time, but looking back…
[]Teacher Recs: Should be good, one from physics teacher who often makes comments about how i belong at Caltech/MIT and is also friends with admissions at MIT, other from Music teacher who I’ve had for 3 years and knows me well
[]Counselor Rec: probably extremely impersonal, i don’t know her, although I did get her mad recently…
[]Supplementary Material: Research paper on heat transfer and fluids, presented at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition
[ *]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): eh… the IMECE? I forgot to include in my app though…
[/ul]Personal[ul]

[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] Pretty disappointed, Caltech was one of my top schools and home of my hero Richard Feynman, but there’s still a chance for me and the rest of us deferrees. I thought my passion for physics could get me in, but I neglected math, which i regret a lot now.

[]Supplementary Material: An extra letter of rec from a math summer program (I don’t want to give away identity)

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:Well, that took longer than necessary to find out for me . I had to wait until today after receiving the announcement email on Saturday, December 8 to contact the admissions office and sort out an issue with not being able to login. I really want to compete for the medical scholars program they have in collaboration with UCSD (no sign of any notification yet but there is still time), but either way, I’m extremely happy I got in! Good luck to everyone else (and those in the future that venture upon my post)! 加油![/ul]

Essays: average. spent the minimal time on them. “why caltech” was weak.
Teacher Recs: okay. math teacher was probably brutally honest.
Counselor Rec: not good. i had a terrible letter writer (large public school)

Location: SoCal
High School Type: large public. mostly white and latino.

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: My essays were not very well developed. I’ve written many essays for other schools that were a lot better. I’m waiting for MIT results, which will come in four days!

Hey how do I access my Caltech account? I applied Early action. Please help

Palladin124 if you were really a caltech potential you’d problem-solve you’re way to victory ;)

All jokes aside, yeah, it was crap to try to find it, especially because my email put all emails from caltech into a junk folder which i can’t access. It took quite a bit of work to find it.

That said, here’s the link: https://apply.caltech.edu/account/login
If you don’t know your password, juts do a forgot password. the login email is your commonapp email. If you aren’t receiving emails from caltech, adding their admissions email to your contacts solves the spam problem. When you do forgot password, they send an email about recovery.

Good luck!

Anyone receive any news about their medical scholars program yet?

Nope…still waiting on that too.
