[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I feel that my awards and grades were definitely not to par, especially since the Bs I took were in STEM classes. However, I’m not nearly as upset as I thought I’d be. I’m not too bummed since Caltech really isn’t the right “fit” for me. It’s really rigorous academically, and though that may be a plus to some, I would personally prefer more free time to just sit and think. I’ve spent the past 4 years of high school drowning in schoolwork that I hadn’t had much time to do my own thing, and I think that if I had to spend another 4 years that way, I’d be quite miserable  I’m sure those of you who got in are well suited. Congratulations. To those of you that weren’t, just think of it not as a rejection of you as a person or as a student, but as the adcoms trying to do the best for you and your personality/learning style. :D

[]Essays: Good but not completely unique. I am a good writer but did not come up with the most original ideas. Mostly talked about engineering aspirations on the Why Caltech, and stuff like JPL and the honor system.
My CommonApp essay described my experience with working with a fitness trainer, and how working hard while exercising relates to working hard in my academic life. This essay was very good but not oriented toward Caltech as well as it could have been.
[]Teacher Recs: Should be pretty good. Math teacher would write a very good recommendation, as she knows me as one of the strongest/most focused students. My social science rec should be pretty good too.
[]Counselor Rec: OK at the least, but possibly not oriented for tech schools (she knows liberal arts schools better)

[ /list][ b]Subjective[ /b]

[ list]

[ *]Essays: Common App essay was my best piece of writing ever, I think (9-10/10). Ethical dilemma question went well I think, may have been a tad vague (8-9/10). Unusual way in which I have fun was decent, but nothing too out of the ordinary (I wrote about how I love to book my school’s Performing Arts Center to invigorate normally-mundane school presentations). Caltech community question was probably unique since it spoke about my business experience rather than other expertise. For the “Why Caltech?” question, I mainly just talked about SURF and how I want to collaborate mathematics that I study with other disciplines.
[ *]Teacher Recs: Math recommendation was from Calculus BC teacher. He and I didn’t know each other particularly well, but he seems to like me as a student quite a bit, so I’m sure it was very nice. Humanities recommendation was from my AP Lang teacher, probably great. And, also, I submitted a supplemental recommendation from the advisor of Math Honor Society (of which I am President). I did not read it, but he told me he called me the best person he’s met in four decades of teaching, so that’s a huge plus.
[ *]Counselor Rec: Probably decent, we had a three hour conversation the day before she wrote the rec, so she probably had a lot of stuff to talk about. She also tells me she insinuated my #1 rank in the school despite the lack of rankings.

[]Essays: Common App was about my experiences in Rocketry Club (9/10, one of my best pieces of writing). Books were The Demon-Haunted World, Ishmael, and If On a Winter’s Night a Traveler. Wrote about my appreciation of British television for the ‘fun’ essay and my love of creative writing as a possible way to popularize/disseminate scientific knowledge to the public for the ‘diversity’ essay. For ‘Why Caltech’, I talked about why I love STEM with concrete examples of things I’ve already done and want to do, and tied it to Caltech’s mission/ideals and resources. I’d say that the quality of the supplements varied from 7-9/10.

[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Yayyyyy  … For advice, I guess it’s important that your profile and essays match Caltech’s ideals (expanding and disseminating human knowledge, “The truth shall set you free”, etc). In retrospect, I realize that the overall impression that my essays gave closely aligns with what Caltech values. Conversely, I got rejected from MIT, and I believe that this is largely because my essays didn’t really match what MIT values. And of course, you need the extracurriculars to back up/flesh out how you present yourself in your essays (otherwise you’ll just be making vague claims).[/ul]
